Refined Obsidian is a Mekanism metal that you’ll make from
Obsidian, a little
Diamond and Osmium, and it’s what the
Atomic Alloy and the
Ultimate Control Circuit are built on. Each block of Obsidian is enough for four Refined Obsidian Ingots, though it has to go through three different machines to get there.
Refined Glowstone is the simpler of the two, as it’s just
Glowstone Dust that’s been pressed with Osmium in the
Osmium Compressor. You won’t need much of it, with its main use being the frame of a
Teleporter, where it’s crafted alongside eight Refined Obsidian Ingots.
How to Get It
Refined Obsidian
It starts in a Crusher, which will break one
Obsidian into four
Obsidian Dust. Each dust then needs 10 mB of
Diamond in the
Metallurgic Infuser, and what you’ll get out of that is
Refined Obsidian Dust, which is where the chain splits depending on what you’re making.
Crush the Obsidian
A Crusher turns 1 Obsidian into 4 Obsidian Dust.
Infuse the dust with Diamond
The Metallurgic Infuser turns each Obsidian Dust into Refined Obsidian Dust for 10 mB of Diamond.
Compress it with Osmium
The Osmium Compressor turns each Refined Obsidian Dust into a Refined Obsidian Ingot, using up 1 Osmium Ingot.
For the ingot, the dust goes into an Osmium Compressor with an
Osmium Ingot in its second slot, and it’ll use up the whole ingot for each
Refined Obsidian Ingot. So one Obsidian ends up costing four Osmium Ingots, along with 40 mB of Diamond, which is half of an
Enriched Diamond.
Each of the three machines takes 10 seconds for one item, and as the
Crusher gives four dust at a time, it’s the Infuser and the compressor that you’ll be waiting on. That’s why it’s worth leaving a stack of Obsidian Dust running through them while you get on with something else.
Make sure to turn your Diamonds into Enriched Diamond in an
Enrichment Chamber before they go in the Infuser. One of those is worth 80 mB, which covers eight Obsidian Dust, whereas a Diamond that’s been crushed into
Diamond Dust will only cover one.
Enriched Obsidian
When it’s an alloy or a circuit that you’re after, the Refined Obsidian Dust doesn’t get compressed at all. It goes back into the Infuser’s infusion slot instead, where each dust is worth 10 mB of Refined Obsidian, or you can put it through an Enrichment Chamber first to get an
Enriched Obsidian, which is worth 80 mB.
An
Atomic Alloy takes 40 mB, so a single Enriched Obsidian will make two of them, and you’d need four plain dust for just one. It’s the same eight times saving that you’ll get from the other enriched items, so there isn’t really a reason to skip it.
Refined Glowstone
A
Refined Glowstone Ingot only takes the one machine, as you’ll put
Glowstone Dust in the
Osmium Compressor with an Osmium Ingot. It costs the same single ingot of Osmium as the Refined Obsidian does, and it takes the same 10 seconds.
Putting either ingot through a Crusher will undo it, so a Refined Glowstone Ingot goes back to Glowstone Dust and a Refined Obsidian Ingot goes back to Refined Obsidian Dust. You won’t get the Osmium back though, so it’s only worth doing if you’ve made too many ingots and need the dust for alloys.
How to Use It
Refined Obsidian Ingots
The ingots go into the machines at the top end of the mod, and most of those recipes ask for four of them. The
Teleporter is where the most will be needed, as each craft of its frames takes eight Refined Obsidian Ingots and one Refined Glowstone Ingot, and you’ll get nine
Teleporter Frames out of it.
| Made With Them | Ingots | What It Is For |
|---|---|---|
| Teleporter Frame (9) | 8 | The frame around a Teleporter |
| Chemical Dissolution Chamber | 4 | The first step of 5x ore processing |
| Chemical Washer | 4 | Cleaning slurry for 5x ore processing |
| Chemical Crystallizer | 4 | Turning slurry into Crystals |
| Quantum Entangloporter | 4 | Moving items, fluids and power between two points |
| Dimensional Stabilizer | 4 | Keeping chunks loaded |
| Robit | 2 | A small helper that follows you |
| Atomic Disassembler | 1 | The mining tool with several modes |
The three chemical machines are the ones to plan for, as they’re all needed for the last tier on the Ore Processing page, which is twelve ingots between them. The Teleporter and the
Quantum Entangloporter come later, and both of those need
Atomic Alloys as well, so they’ll use up even more of your dust.
Alloys and Circuits
Most of your Refined Obsidian Dust won’t ever become an ingot, as it’s what turns a
Reinforced Alloy into an Atomic Alloy. The Infuser is able to make an
Ultimate Control Circuit with it as well, which takes 240 mB, and both of those are on the Alloys and Control Circuits page.
The Storage Blocks
Nine ingots will craft into a block, and they’re simply called
Refined Obsidian and
Refined Glowstone, without the word block in the name. The Refined Obsidian one is as hard to mine as normal
Obsidian and needs a
Diamond Pickaxe, but it has twice the blast resistance, and it can’t be pushed by a
Piston either.

It also gives off a little light, and it’s able to be used as the frame of a Nether Portal, so you could build a portal out of it that lights itself up. Refined Glowstone is as bright as normal
Glowstone, and a block of it is needed to craft the
Silk Touch Unit and the
Ore Refinement Unit for the
Meka-Tool.

Both blocks will work in the base of a
Beacon, and each ingot breaks down into nine nuggets, like the
Refined Obsidian Nugget and the
Refined Glowstone Nugget. If you have Mekanism Tools installed as well, that’s the add-on with armor and tools made from both metals.
Turning Obsidian Dust Back into Obsidian
If you’ve crushed more
Obsidian than you needed, a
Combiner is able to turn it back, by pressing four Obsidian Dust together with a piece of
Cobbled Deepslate. That only works on the plain dust though, so once it’s been infused with
Diamond, there’s no way of getting the Obsidian or the Diamond out of it again.
It’s usually easier to just crush what you need, as a single Obsidian goes a long way when each dust makes a whole ingot. With the dust sorted, the next thing to look at is the
Atomic Alloy, as that’s where most of it will go.
FAQ
You’ll crush
Obsidian into Obsidian Dust in a
Crusher, then infuse each dust with 10 mB of
Diamond in a
Metallurgic Infuser to get Refined Obsidian Dust. That dust goes into an
Osmium Compressor with an
Osmium Ingot, which turns it into a Refined Obsidian Ingot, and one Obsidian is enough for four of them.
Obsidian Dust comes from the Crusher, which will turn one Obsidian into four of them. It came from the
Enrichment Chamber in older versions of the mod, which is why some guides still send you there, and you can’t get it by crafting either, so you’ll need a Crusher running before you’re able to start on Refined Obsidian.
Refined Glowstone Ingots are made in the Osmium Compressor, from one
Glowstone Dust and one Osmium Ingot. Nine of the ingots will craft into the Refined Glowstone block, which is as bright as normal
Glowstone, and the ingots themselves are mostly used for crafting
Teleporter Frames.
The Refined Obsidian block counts as a portal frame, so you’re able to build a Nether Portal out of it and light it in the normal way. It’ll cost a lot more than Obsidian though, as each block is nine ingots, and every ingot needs an Osmium Ingot and some Diamond.
