Mekanism is one of the most powerful technology mods ever made for Minecraft, and it can feel completely overwhelming the first time you open it. Players describe it as a mod that starts simple enough with a Heat Generator and a handful of machines, then gradually expands into automated ore processing, hydrogen-powered
jetpacks, autonomous
digital miners, and end-game quantum storage systems.
The learning curve is steep, but every step of the progression feels earned. This guide covers everything you need to know to go from your first Osmium ingot to the most advanced setups Mekanism has to offer.
Getting Started with Mekanism
The first resource you need to find is
Osmium Ore, and the good news is that it spawns extremely frequently. Osmium generates in massive quantities above Y level 72 all the way toward the surface, making it far more common than Iron in the upper world. Mine plenty of it early and smelt it into Osmium Ingots, because almost every early machine requires this material.

Once you have Osmium, your first crafting goal is the
Metallurgic Infuser. This machine is the backbone of all Mekanism progression and is required to make almost every alloy, circuit, and advanced material in the mod. The recipe combines
Iron Ingots, a
Furnace, an Osmium Ingot, and
Redstone Dust in a shaped crafting pattern.
The Metallurgic Infuser needs power to run, so you will also need a Heat Generator as your first energy source. Place the Heat Generator down, load it with
Coal or Wood, and connect it to the Metallurgic Infuser using
Basic Universal Cables. The Basic Universal Cable crafts with two Steel Ingots and a piece of Redstone Dust, producing eight cables per craft.
Making Steel is your first multi-step process. Put Coal into the yellow resource slot of your Metallurgic Infuser to convert it into Carbon, then infuse Iron Ingots with that Carbon to make
Enriched Iron.

Put the Enriched Iron through a second Metallurgic Infuser with more Carbon to get Steel Dust, then smelt the Steel Dust in an
Energized Smelter to produce Steel Ingots. You will need two Metallurgic Infusers running in sequence to make Steel efficiently.
Build a Heat Generator first, then power a Metallurgic Infuser with it. Make Infused Alloys and
Basic Control Circuits right away, as both are required in almost every machine recipe that follows.
Power Generation in Mekanism
Mekanism measures energy in Joules (J) and provides multiple ways to generate it at every stage of the game. Understanding which generator to build and when is one of the most important decisions in any Mekanism playthrough. Players describe the mod as feeling very approachable once the power system clicks, but confusing until it does.
Heat Generator
The Heat Generator is your first power source and needs only basic materials to craft. It burns Coal and other fuels, converting them into Lava internally and using that Lava to generate electricity. Place it down, fill the fuel slot, and connect cables from its output face to your machines. It is enough to power a Metallurgic Infuser and get your early progression started.
Wind Generator

The Wind Generator is the best early game power upgrade and works around the clock without any fuel. It requires Infused Alloys and Basic Control Circuits to craft, making it a goal for your second batch of machines. The higher you place a Wind Generator, the more power it produces. At Y level 128, a Wind Generator produces significantly more energy than one placed near the surface at Y level 64, so building a tall tower to mount your generators pays off immediately.
Solar Generator and Advanced Solar Generator

Solar Generators produce power during the day when the sky is unobstructed. They are passive and fuel-free but stop generating at night. The Advanced Solar Generator requires several normal Solar Generators combined with Infused Alloys and Iron Ingots, and produces substantially more power than the basic version. Solar setups work best when paired with Energy Cubes that store power during the day for use at night.
Gas Burning Generator and Bio Generator
The Gas Burning Generator burns Hydrogen and other gases to produce a large amount of electricity. Feed it Hydrogen by splitting water in an
Electrolytic Separator, which outputs Hydrogen on the left and Oxygen on the right. Use the "dump excess" option to prevent the gas tanks from filling up and stalling production.
This generator is one of the strongest options before nuclear power and can be built with mid-game materials. The Bio Generator burns Bioethanol produced by running organic matter through a
Crusher, making it a good secondary option once you have farming resources available.
Energy Storage with Energy Cubes
Energy Cubes store power and act as portable batteries that can be moved between locations while charged. The
Basic Energy Cube holds 4 million J, the Advanced holds 16 million J, the Elite holds 64 million J, and the Ultimate holds 256 million J. Connect multiple generators to a central Energy Cube and then distribute power from there to your machines using Universal Cables.

Essential Machines Guide
Mekanism's five core machines form the foundation for almost every system you will build. Learning what each one does and how they work together is the most important skill in the mod. All five can be upgraded with Speed Upgrades to process items faster, and Energy Upgrades to reduce their power consumption. Each machine accepts up to eight of each upgrade type.
Enrichment Chamber
The
Enrichment Chamber processes raw ores and other materials into enriched versions and useful byproducts. Raw Ores go in and come out as Enriched Ore, which is worth more when processed further. It also converts
Obsidian into Obsidian Dust,
Diamonds into Diamond Dust, and many other materials into forms needed for crafting. This machine is the first step in Mekanism's ore doubling chain.
Crusher
The Crusher grinds materials down into dust, biofuel, and other components. Raw Ingots crushed into dust can be smelted back into Ingots, but Crushed Ores yield more than one product when processed through the full ore chain. The Crusher also processes plants and organic matter into Biofuel, which powers the Bio Generator. It is an essential machine for both ore processing and energy production.
Energized Smelter
The Energized Smelter works like a furnace but runs on electricity and can be upgraded to process items extremely quickly. It is used to produce Steel Ingots from Steel Dust, smelt processed ore dusts into ingots, and handle any other smelting task. With maximum Speed Upgrades installed, it processes items at ten times the base speed. This machine gets used constantly throughout any Mekanism run.
Combiner
The
Combiner assembles processed materials back into ore blocks and combined forms. Raw Ore combined with
Stone or
Cobblestone produces Ore Blocks, which then process into more ingots than the raw ore alone. The Combiner is a key step in achieving triple and quadruple ore output and requires a Reinforced Alloy to craft, placing it in the mid-game.
Osmium Compressor and Precision Sawmill
The
Osmium Compressor uses Osmium to compress dusts into ingots and compressible materials. It is required to convert Refined Obsidian Dust into Refined Obsidian Ingots, a critical material for late-game crafting. The
Precision Sawmill deconstructs wooden items and other materials into components, recovering resources you would otherwise lose.
The Configurator
The
Configurator is Mekanism's multi-tool for configuring machines and transport blocks. Right-clicking a machine with it opens a side configuration panel where you can set each face to input, output, or energy mode. It is also used to configure Logistical Transporters for automated item routing. Every Mekanism build needs at least one Configurator in your hotbar.
Ore Processing and Doubling
One of Mekanism's most powerful features is its ore multiplication system. A basic setup doubles your ore output. With the right machines, you can triple and even quadruple the ingots you get from every ore block. This dramatically reduces how much mining you need to do and makes building advanced setups much faster.
Doubling Ores (2x Output)
Run raw ore through the Enrichment Chamber to produce Enriched Ore, then smelt the Enriched Ore in the Energized Smelter. Each raw ore produces two ingots instead of one. This is the simplest setup and only requires the two machines you already have from your basic build.
Tripling Ores (3x Output)
Adding a
Purification Chamber and a
Chemical Injection Chamber expands the chain to three ingots per ore. The ore goes through Purification first (using Oxygen gas), producing Clumps. The Crusher turns Clumps into Dirty Dusts, then the Enrichment Chamber cleans the Dirty Dust into regular Dust, and finally the Energized Smelter produces three ingots. This chain requires gas handling with Pressurized Tubes to feed Oxygen into the Purification Chamber.
Quadrupling Ores (4x Output)
Full quadruple output adds a
Chemical Dissolution Chamber and
Chemical Washer to the beginning of the chain. The ore is dissolved using Sulfuric Acid in the Chemical Dissolution Chamber into a Slurry, washed clean in the Chemical Washer, then processed through the rest of the tripling chain. The 4x chain requires significant infrastructure including gas production, washing, and precise machine configuration, but yields four ingots from every single raw ore.
All Mekanism ores (Osmium, Tin, Lead, Uranium, Fluorite) and all vanilla ores (Iron, Gold, Copper) can be processed through the multiplication chain. Prioritize Iron and Gold first since they are used in the largest quantities.
Progression Guide
Mekanism progression is built around four tiers of Alloys and Control Circuits, each one unlocking the next tier of machines, cables, and gear. Understanding this upgrade path is the key to moving through the mod efficiently. Players who rush advanced machines without preparing the right alloys find themselves stuck repeatedly, while those who invest in the alloy chain early unlock new capabilities quickly.
Alloy Tiers
Infused Alloy is the first tier and is made by infusing Iron Ingots with Redstone in the Metallurgic Infuser. It is used in almost every mid-game recipe. Reinforced Alloy comes next, made by infusing an Infused Alloy with Diamond Dust. To get Diamond Dust, run a Diamond through the Crusher. Atomic Alloy is the final tier, made by infusing Reinforced Alloy with Refined Obsidian. It is required for the most powerful machines and end-game gear.

Reinforced
Atomic
Control Circuits
Control Circuits follow the same four-tier structure. Basic Control Circuits are made by infusing Osmium Ingots with Redstone in the Metallurgic Infuser. Advanced, Elite, and
Ultimate Control Circuits each require the circuit of the previous tier combined with the matching Alloy tier. The Basic Circuit goes into most starter machines while the higher tiers gate access to factories, QIO storage, and the MekaSuit.
Factories: Scaling Your Machines
Every basic machine can be upgraded into a Factory, which processes multiple items simultaneously in one block. A Basic Factory processes three items at once, an Advanced Factory handles five, an Elite handles seven, and the Ultimate Factory runs nine slots at the same time. Install a Tier Installer on any existing machine to upgrade it without losing the machine's contents or configuration. Factories dramatically increase throughput when you are processing large quantities of ore.
Refined Obsidian
Refined Obsidian is a key material for late progression and requires a multi-step process to make. Run Obsidian through the Enrichment Chamber to get Obsidian Dust, then infuse the Obsidian Dust with Diamond Dust in the Metallurgic Infuser to get Refined Obsidian Dust. Finally, run the Refined Obsidian Dust through the Osmium Compressor with Osmium to produce Refined Obsidian Ingots. These ingots are used in the
Atomic Disassembler, the
Robit, and the MekaSuit.
Best Tools and Gear in Mekanism
Mekanism adds a full progression of personal equipment that starts with a basic Jetpack and ends with the MekaSuit, a fully modular powered armor set that players describe as one of the strongest gear options in any modded game. Each piece of gear runs on energy or gas and can be charged at a
Chargepad.
Jetpack

The Jetpack is one of the most desired early goals in Mekanism. It is worn in the chest slot and fueled by Hydrogen gas stored in an internal tank. Fill it using a Chemical Tank connected to a Pressurized Tube from your Electrolytic Separator. The Jetpack has three modes: Regular (climb while holding Space), Hover (maintain altitude automatically), and Disabled. Switch modes with the Mekanism Mode keybind. The Armored Jetpack provides the same flight capability but also offers armor protection at the cost of additional materials.
Free Runners
Free Runners are worn in the boot slot and absorb fall damage using stored energy. As long as they have charge, they completely negate damage from any fall height. They require Infused Alloys, Basic Control Circuits, and
Energy Tablets to craft, making them an early to mid-game item. The Armored Free Runners add armor protection on top of the fall damage absorption.
Atomic Disassembler

The Atomic Disassembler is the ultimate multi-tool in Mekanism. It combines the function of a pickaxe, axe, shovel, and sword into one energy-powered item. In mining mode, it can break multiple blocks at once or mine a single block instantly at full charge. As a weapon, it deals between 4 and 20 half-hearts of damage depending on how much energy it has stored, up to a maximum of 1 million J. It requires Atomic Alloys, Infused Alloys, Energy Tablets, and Refined Obsidian Ingots to craft, placing it firmly in the late-game tier.
Robit
The Robit is a small robot companion that follows you and provides several utility functions. It can smelt items, repair your gear, craft recipes, and pick up items automatically. It is also required as a crafting ingredient in the Digital Miner. The Robit requires an Atomic Alloy, Refined Obsidian Ingots, Energy Tablets, Steel Ingots, and a personal storage item to craft. Players who invest in a Robit early find it invaluable for convenience.
MekaSuit
The MekaSuit is a complete four-piece powered armor set (Helmet, BodyArmor, Pants, Boots) that matches Netherite armor in base protection and becomes vastly more powerful with modules installed. The
Modification Station lets you add modules for features like a built-in jetpack unit, night vision, a magnet for item collection, solar charging, and damage reduction. A fully upgraded MekaSuit makes the player nearly unkillable in most situations. It requires Atomic Alloys, Ultimate Control Circuits, and other high-tier materials across all four pieces.
Advanced Features
Digital Miner
The Digital Miner is an automated mining machine that digs blocks in a configurable radius around its position. Set it to mine specific ores using filters based on block names or tags, set the radius, and let it run. It has a default radius of 10 blocks and can be upgraded with Speed Upgrades. The Digital Miner requires a Robit, a
Teleportation Core, a
Logistical Sorter, Atomic Alloys, a Basic Control Circuit, and a
Steel Casing to craft. It is a mid-to-late game machine that many players consider their primary mining goal after mastering the alloy chain.
QIO Storage System
The QIO (Quantum Item Orchestration) system is Mekanism's end-game digital storage solution. A
QIO Drive Array stores QIO Drives, each of which holds millions of items in a compressed digital format. The
QIO Dashboard provides an interface to access and sort all stored items from anywhere in the network.
QIO Importers and Exporters automate moving items in and out of the system. The components require Ultimate Control Circuits and high-tier materials to craft.
Induction Matrix
The Induction Matrix is a multiblock energy storage structure built from
Induction Casing blocks and at least one Induction Provider and one Induction Cell inside. It can store enormous quantities of energy — far more than any number of Energy Cubes. The more Induction Cells you install, the more energy it holds. The more Induction Providers you install, the faster it can charge and discharge. Large Induction Matrices serve as the central energy battery for entire automated factory setups.
Teleporter
The
Teleporter is a multiblock structure that teleports players and items between two linked portal frames. Build two
Teleporter frames with matching channel names, power them, and step in to travel instantly. Teleporters work across dimensions and are useful for connecting your base to distant mining operations or resource farms. They consume energy per teleportation and require a significant power supply for reliable use.
Tips for Success
Players who have spent time with Mekanism share a consistent set of strategies for making progress without hitting frustrating walls. The mod rewards systematic building over trying to skip steps, and most confusion comes from not fully understanding one layer before moving to the next.
Storing Cardboard Boxes in your inventory lets you pick up machines while keeping their contents. This avoids losing the resources and settings inside a machine when you need to move or reorganize your base layout. The
Cardboard Box is cheap to craft and saves enormous frustration when redesigning setups.
Build your Ore Processing chain in tiers rather than trying to set up the full 4x chain immediately. Start with the 2x doubling chain (Enrichment Chamber + Energized Smelter) first, add the 3x chain when you have gas handling working, and only attempt the 4x setup once the rest of your infrastructure is stable. Attempting the full chain before you understand gas transport is one of the most common frustrations new players report.
Mekanism FAQ
Build an Electrolytic Separator and power it with a water source using an
Electric Pump connected by Mechanical Pipes. The Electrolytic Separator splits water into Hydrogen (left side) and Oxygen (right side). Use Pressurized Tubes to route the Hydrogen into a
Basic Chemical Tank, then fill your Jetpack by right-clicking the tank. Set the "dump excess" option on the Oxygen side to prevent it from filling up and stalling the process.
Wind Generators are the best early game option because they generate power continuously without fuel. Build them as high as possible (Y128 or above) for maximum output. They require Infused Alloys and Basic Control Circuits, so start with a Heat Generator to power your first Metallurgic Infuser, make the necessary alloys and circuits, then build Wind Generators as soon as possible.
The most common causes are incorrect side configuration and insufficient power. Use the Configurator to check that the input side is set to receive items and the energy face is accepting power. If items are going in but nothing comes out, check that your cables are connected to the correct output face. Speed Upgrades greatly increase power demand, so machines with many Speed Upgrades installed need significantly more power than their base rating.
The Metallurgic Infuser is used to make all four tiers of Alloys (Infused, Reinforced, Atomic), all four tiers of Control Circuits, Steel through enriched iron and carbon, and many other specialized materials. The yellow slot holds the infusion catalyst (Redstone, Diamond Dust, Carbon, etc.) and the main slot holds the item being infused. It is the single most important machine in Mekanism and is involved in nearly every recipe chain.
The Digital Miner requires a Robit (made from Atomic Alloy and Refined Obsidian), a Teleportation Core (an advanced crafted component), a Logistical Sorter, Atomic Alloys, a Basic Control Circuit, and a Steel Casing. All of these require the full alloy progression to be complete, making the Digital Miner a mid-to-late game goal. Focus on reaching Atomic Alloy production first, then gather the remaining components.
The simplest doubling method runs raw ore through an Enrichment Chamber to produce Enriched Ore, which is then smelted in the Energized Smelter to produce two ingots instead of one. Adding a Purification Chamber, Crusher, and additional Enrichment Chamber in sequence produces three ingots per ore. The full four-step chain with a Chemical Dissolution Chamber and Chemical Washer produces four ingots per ore. Build the chain in stages and test each step before adding more complexity.
