The
Precision Sawmill is a Mekanism machine that cuts a log into 6 planks instead of the 4 you’d get by hand, with a 25% chance of
Sawdust coming out as well. It uses 20 FE/t (50 J/t) and takes 10 seconds for each item.
It will also break wooden items back down into the planks they were made from, so it’s a good place to send any spare
Chests or doors that you’ve ended up with. The Sawdust is the only part of this that the rest of the mod uses, and it’s mostly there as a way to make
Paper and
Charcoal.
How to Make It
It’s crafted from a
Steel Casing with an
Infused Alloy on each side, 2
Basic Control Circuits above and below, and 4
Iron Ingots in the corners. The alloys, the circuits and the Steel for the casing all come from a
Metallurgic Infuser, so it can be built early on.
Once it’s placed and has power, you’ll see that it has one slot to put items in and two for them to come out of. The first of those is for the main item, which is usually planks, and the second one is where any Sawdust or other extras will end up.
How It Works

Every recipe has a main item that you’ll always get, and most of them have a second item that only comes out some of the time. With a log that’s 6 planks every time and a piece of Sawdust about one time in four, so a full stack of logs will give you 384 planks and around 16 Sawdust to go with them.
| Input | Main output | Sawdust chance |
|---|---|---|
| Any log | 6 planks | 25% |
| Any planks | 6 Sticks | 25% |
| Wooden slab | 3 Sticks | 12.5% |
| Wooden stairs | 9 Sticks | 37.5% |
| Stick | 1 Sawdust | Always |
| Wooden button | 1 Sawdust | 25% for a second |
Planks give 6
Sticks each when they’re put through it, which is three times what you’d get from a
Crafting Table. If it’s the Sawdust that you’re after, the quickest way to make it is to put those Sticks back in, as each one will always become a single piece of it.
Breaking Items Down
A lot of wooden blocks can be put through the sawmill to get their materials back. Storage and furniture blocks like
Chests and beds always come back as
Oak Planks, whereas doors, boats and fence gates give planks of the wood they were made from. The extra items in the second slot are guaranteed for these recipes.
| Input | Output |
|---|---|
| Chest | 8 Oak Planks |
| Barrel | 7 Oak Planks |
| Crafting Table | 4 Oak Planks |
| Bookshelf | 6 Oak Planks and 3 Books |
| Lectern | 8 Oak Planks and 3 Books |
| Jukebox | 8 Oak Planks and 1 Diamond |
| Note Block | 8 Oak Planks and 1 Redstone Dust |
| Bed | 3 Oak Planks and 3 Wool |
| Door | 2 planks of the same wood |
| Fence gate | 2 planks of the same wood and 4 Sticks |
| Boat | 5 planks of the same wood |
It’s able to cut a
Melon into 9 slices as well, and it will split a
Block of Bamboo back into the 9
Bamboo that went into it.
Torches come apart too, where 4 of them will give you back a Stick and a piece of
Coal.
Sawdust
There are four things that
Sawdust can be used for. If you place three of them in a row on a
Crafting Table, you’ll get 6
Paper, which is handy when there’s no
Sugar Cane nearby. Eight of them can be put into an
Enrichment Chamber as well, to make one
Charcoal Dust.

Charcoal Dust is usually made by putting
Charcoal through a
Crusher, so that’s the recipe its tab opens on below, and the Sawdust route is the second one you’ll see. Either way it’s worth 20 mB of Carbon in a
Metallurgic Infuser, which is twice what a piece of
Coal gives.
Two Sawdust and a
Clay Ball will craft into 3
Dye Base, which is what the
Painting Machine needs to make any dye. The last use is in a
Pressurized Reaction Chamber, where 8 of them can be reacted with a little Water and Oxygen to give 25 mB of Hydrogen.
Upgrades and Automation
It takes up to 8
Speed Upgrades, 8
Energy Upgrades and one
Muffling Upgrade, the same as the other basic machines. All 8 Speed Upgrades will bring it down to a second for each log, although it’ll use 2,000 FE/t at that point unless the Energy Upgrades are in there with them.
If you’re feeding it from a tree farm, remember that items never leave a machine by themselves, so auto-eject has to be turned on in the side configuration, which covers both output slots. It can be upgraded into a Sawing Factory too. Sawdust that you don’t need for
Paper is best sent on to an
Enrichment Chamber to become
Charcoal Dust.
FAQ
Each log becomes 6 planks in the sawmill, which is 2 more than crafting them by hand. There’s a 25% chance of a piece of Sawdust with every log as well. Planks can then be cut into 6
Sticks each, so one log is worth 36 Sticks if that’s what you need.
Sawdust is used to craft
Paper, with 3 of them making 6 sheets, and 8 of them enrich into
Charcoal Dust. It’s also part of the
Dye Base recipe along with a
Clay Ball, and it can be turned into a small amount of Hydrogen in a
Pressurized Reaction Chamber.
Putting Sticks into the Precision Sawmill is the reliable way, as every Stick becomes one Sawdust. A plank makes 6 Sticks first, so a single log can end up as 36 Sawdust, on top of whatever dropped from the 25% chances along the way.
It’s crafted from a
Steel Casing, 4
Iron Ingots, 2
Basic Control Circuits and 2
Infused Alloys. The alloys are a
Copper Ingot infused with Redstone on newer versions, or an Iron Ingot on older ones, and they’re made in a
Metallurgic Infuser like the circuits.
