The
Purification Chamber is a Mekanism machine that’s used to turn an ore block into 3 Clumps, which makes it the first step of 3x ore processing. It needs a steady supply of Oxygen to work, as well as 80 FE/t (200 J/t), and it takes 10 seconds for each ore that goes through it.
You’ll be able to build one as soon as you have
Advanced Control Circuits, and it sits in front of the 2x line you already have. The Clumps it makes aren’t smelted directly, as they go into a
Crusher first, then an
Enrichment Chamber, and only then into a
Furnace.
How to Make It
The recipe needs 4
Infused Alloy, 2
Advanced Control Circuits and 2
Osmium Ingots, which are all placed around an
Enrichment Chamber in the middle. The Enrichment Chamber is used up, so you’ll want to craft a second one if it was the only one in your 2x line.
The Advanced Control Circuit is the part that takes the longest, as each one needs a
Basic Control Circuit and 2 Infused Alloy. Later on, a Purification Chamber is used up in the same way to craft the
Chemical Injection Chamber, so it’s worth making 2 of them if you’re planning on going up to 4x.
How It Works
There are 2 input slots inside the
Purification Chamber, with one for the ore and a smaller one for the Oxygen. While it’s working it’ll use 80 FE/t and hold up to 32,000 FE, and each item takes 10 seconds, so one ore block costs 16,000 FE to turn into its 3 Clumps.

Clumps can’t be smelted, so they’re sent to a
Crusher to become Dirty Dust, which is then cleaned in an Enrichment Chamber and smelted into ingots. That means the 3x line is 4 machines long, and it’ll only work on Iron, Gold, Copper, Osmium, Tin,
Lead and Uranium, as they’re the only metals that have Clumps.
Items never leave a Mekanism machine by themselves when it’s first placed, so the Clumps will sit in the output slot until you turn auto-eject on in the Side Configuration tab. It’s the same for the Crusher and
Enrichment Chamber after it, so check all of them if the line has stopped.
How Much Oxygen It Uses

Oxygen isn’t used once per ore, as the machine takes a little of it on every tick that it’s working instead. Over the 10 seconds that adds up to around 200 mB for each item, although the amount is rolled each tick, so it’ll usually come out slightly below that, at about 180 mB on average.
Using Flint
The easiest way to try it out is to put
Flint into the Oxygen slot, as each piece is turned into 10 mB on the spot. That works out at roughly 18 Flint for every ore though, so it’s only really useful for testing, and you’ll want Oxygen piped in before running a full
Chest of ore through.
Oxygen from an Electrolytic Separator
Oxygen comes from an
Electrolytic Separator, which splits Water into Hydrogen and Oxygen, and gives 1 mB of Oxygen for every 2 mB of Water. The tank inside the Purification Chamber only holds 210 mB, so a Pressurized Tube needs to stay connected to it, with one Separator being enough to keep a single machine running.
Recipes
What you put in decides how many Clumps come out, and it isn’t always 3. A single piece of raw ore gives 2 Clumps, whereas a block of raw ore gives 18 at once and only uses twice the Oxygen of a normal item, so it’s worth crafting your raw ore into blocks before it goes in.
| Input | Clumps | Oxygen |
|---|---|---|
| 1 ore block | 3 | About 200 mB |
| 1 raw ore | 2 | About 200 mB |
| 1 block of raw ore | 18 | About 400 mB |
| 1 Shard | 1 | About 200 mB |
The last row is how the machine is used at the higher tiers, as every Shard from a
Chemical Injection Chamber has to be purified into a Clump as well. This is where most of the Oxygen goes later on, since an ore block at 4x will give 4 Shards, and each of them will need its own 200 mB.
Upgrades and Automation
The
Purification Chamber takes Speed, Energy, Muffling and Chemical upgrades, and it’s the Chemical Upgrade that matters the most here.
Speed Upgrades will make it use more Oxygen for every item, with a full set of 8 pushing it up to around 2,000 mB each, which is 10 times the normal amount.
Chemical Upgrades do the opposite, as 8 of them on their own will cut the Oxygen down to about 20 mB per item. If you install 8 of both, the machine will be 10 times faster and back to roughly 200 mB each, so they’re best added together.
For automation, ore goes in through any input side and Oxygen through a Pressurized Tube, and the sides can be changed with a
Configurator or in the Side Configuration tab. The Oxygen tank can only be filled from outside and never emptied by a tube, so it won’t leak back into your network.
Once one machine isn’t enough, it can be turned into a Purifying Factory with a Tier Installer, which will run up to 9 ores at the same time from one shared Oxygen tank. The next machine in the line is the
Chemical Injection Chamber, which takes you up to 4x.
FAQ
Oxygen is made by an
Electrolytic Separator, which will give you 1 mB of it for every 2 mB of Water, along with Hydrogen as well. It’s then sent into the Purification Chamber with a Pressurized Tube.
Flint can be used in the Oxygen slot instead, but each piece is only worth 10 mB, so you’d need around 18 of them for a single ore.
It’ll stop whenever the Oxygen tank is empty or the output slot is full, and both of them are easy to miss. The tank only holds 210 mB, which is about one item’s worth, and the Clumps won’t leave the machine until auto-eject has been turned on for it. It might also be low on power, as it needs 80 FE/t.
Clumps don’t have a smelting recipe, so they have to go through a
Crusher first, which turns each one into Dirty Dust. That is then put through an
Enrichment Chamber to get clean dust, and the dust is what you’re able to smelt into an ingot, either in a
Furnace or an
Energized Smelter.
Each
Speed Upgrade raises the Oxygen that’s used for every item, as the machine takes more of it on each tick. With all 8 installed, an ore will cost around 2,000 mB instead of 200 mB.
Chemical Upgrades cancel that out, so with 8 of each you’ll be back to about 200 mB while running 10 times faster.
