Minecraft Nether Portal Calculator

Convert Overworld coordinates to the Nether and back, so every portal you build links to the one you meant.

  • Both directions
  • Copy /tp command

Overworld

Nether

The Nether runs at 1:8 scale - every block you walk there equals eight in the Overworld. Enter coordinates from either dimension and this calculator converts them exactly the way the game does, so your portal pairs always link to each other.

How to link two portals perfectly

  1. Stand where you want your Overworld portal and press F3 to read your X, Y and Z coordinates.
  2. Enter them in the calculator above - the Nether side shows exactly where the paired portal belongs.
  3. In the Nether, travel to those coordinates (the Copy /tp button helps on servers with commands) and build your frame there.
  4. Light it. Both portals now sit at matching converted coordinates, so the game always links them - no stray portals.

Why portals link to the wrong place

When you step through a portal, the game converts your coordinates and searches for an existing portal near that spot - within roughly 128 blocks in the Overworld, 16 in the Nether. If it finds nothing, it builds a new portal wherever there happens to be space. That is how you end up with a second stray portal and a base you cannot get back to. Placing both sides of the pair at matching converted coordinates prevents it entirely.

Height matters too: the dimensions do not share Y scaling, and anything at Y=128 or above in the Nether is on top of the bedrock roof. Keep your Nether portal below that, ideally near the Y level of your Overworld portal.

Nether portal FAQ

How do I convert Overworld coordinates to Nether coordinates?

Divide X and Z by 8 and keep Y the same. An Overworld portal at X 800, Z -1600 pairs with a Nether portal at X 100, Z -200. Going the other way, multiply X and Z by 8. The calculator does both directions as you type.

Does the Y coordinate change between dimensions?

No. Y is never scaled, so a portal at Y 64 in the Overworld pairs with Y 64 in the Nether. The only limit is the Nether ceiling: anything at Y 128 or above is on the bedrock roof, so keep Nether portals below that.

How close do two portals need to be to link?

When you step through, the game converts your coordinates and looks for an existing portal within about 128 blocks in the Overworld or 16 blocks in the Nether. Build the paired portal at the calculated coordinates and it is always the one the game finds.

Why did my portal spawn a new portal instead of linking?

Either no portal existed within the search range of the converted coordinates, or the nearest one was much higher or lower. The game then builds a fresh portal wherever it finds room. Placing both portals at matching converted coordinates and similar Y prevents it.

Does the 1:8 ratio apply to Bedrock Edition too?

Yes. Java and Bedrock both use the 1:8 scale between the Overworld and the Nether, so the same coordinates work on both.
