The Hazmat Suit is a set of four Mekanism armor pieces that protects you from radiation, and it’s made from
Lead Ingots and dye. With the
Hazmat Mask,
Hazmat Gown,
Hazmat Pants and
Hazmat Boots all worn together, you won’t pick up any radiation dose at all.
It’s cheap enough to craft as soon as you’ve found
Lead, well before a Fission Reactor is running. It only does that one job though, as it gives no armor points, so mobs will hit you as hard as if you were wearing nothing.
How to Get It

Each piece is crafted in the usual armor shape, using
Lead Ingots with one dye in the middle. The
Hazmat Mask,
Hazmat Gown and
Hazmat Pants take an
Orange Dye each, whereas the
Hazmat Boots need a
Black Dye instead.
A full set comes to 24 Lead Ingots, 3 Orange Dye and 1 Black Dye, with no machines needed.
Lead Ore is found in the Overworld and where to look for it is on the ores and metals page. If you’re already set up for ore processing, you’ll need far fewer ore blocks to reach those 24 ingots.
How to Use It
Every piece blocks a fixed share of the dose you’d take while standing in radiation, and the four shares add up to exactly 100%. So a full suit makes you immune to gaining any dose, however strong the source is. A partial suit only lowers it, which isn’t much help next to a bad spill.
| Piece | Slot | Lead Ingots | Dose Blocked |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hazmat Mask | Head | 5 | 25% |
| Hazmat Gown | Chest | 8 | 40% |
| Hazmat Pants | Legs | 7 | 20% |
| Hazmat Boots | Feet | 4 | 15% |
| Full suit | All four | 24 | 100% |
The suit has no durability, so it’ll never wear out and it doesn’t need power or repairs. It can’t be enchanted either. Since it has 0 armor and 0 toughness, it’s best kept in your inventory and swapped on when you’re about to walk into an irradiated area.
The Hazmat Suit only stops you picking up more radiation. If you’ve already got a dose, you’ll keep taking damage and losing hunger with the suit on, until it wears off by itself. Check it with a
Dosimeter, and put the suit on before you go in rather than after.
When you need it
A working reactor doesn’t leak, so you won’t need the suit just to stand beside one or to use its screen. It’s for the times when something has gone wrong, like a broken tube of Nuclear Waste, a
Radioactive Waste Barrel that got mined by mistake, or the clean up after a meltdown.

It’s also worth wearing while you build or change anything on the waste side of a reactor. Breaking a machine or the last tube of a line that holds a radioactive chemical will release it on the spot. With the full suit on, that mistake costs you nothing but the wait for the area to clear.
Hazmat Suit vs MekaSuit
The MekaSuit doesn’t block radiation by default. Each piece needs a
Radiation Shielding Unit installed before it’ll shield anything, and a unit covers the same share as the Hazmat piece for that slot. So it takes four units, one in every piece, to match the full suit’s 100%.
A Radiation Shielding Unit is crafted from 4
Infused Alloy, a
Block of Lead, a
Module Base and 3
HDPE Sheets, and it’s installed at a
Modification Station. Once you have those in, the MekaSuit will give you the same protection along with real armor, and the Hazmat Suit can go in a
Chest. The other modules are listed on the modules page.
FAQ
With all four pieces on it blocks 100% of the dose you’d gain, as the Hazmat Mask, Hazmat Gown, Hazmat Pants and Hazmat Boots cover 25%, 40%, 20% and 15%. Taking one piece off lets that share through. It won’t remove a dose you already have, like one picked up before the suit was on.
The Hazmat Suit has 0 armor points and 0 toughness, so it’s the same as wearing nothing when a mob attacks. It also can’t be enchanted. Most players keep their normal armor on and only swap to the suit for the short time they’re near radiation.
An intact Fission Reactor gives off no radiation outside its walls, so you’re safe standing next to it without the suit. It’s needed when waste escapes, like a broken Pressurized Tube or
Radioactive Waste Barrel, or after a meltdown. Standing inside a reactor while it burns will irradiate you as well.
The full set takes 24
Lead Ingots, which is 5 for the Hazmat Mask, 8 for the Hazmat Gown, 7 for the Hazmat Pants and 4 for the Hazmat Boots. You’ll also need 3
Orange Dye and 1
Black Dye, as the boots use a different color to the other three pieces.
