The Osmium Compressor is a Mekanism machine that presses Osmium into a dust to turn it into an ingot, and it only has two recipes. It’s used to make
Refined Obsidian Ingots from
Refined Obsidian Dust, and
Refined Glowstone Ingots from
Glowstone Dust, with each one using up a whole
Osmium Ingot.
You’ll craft it from a
Steel Casing, 4
Infused Alloys, 2
Advanced Control Circuits and 2
Buckets, so it comes a little after your first few machines. It needs 40 FE/t (100 J/t) to run, which is twice what the
Metallurgic Infuser takes, and each ingot is finished in 10 seconds.
How to Make It
The
Osmium Compressor is crafted with a
Steel Casing in the middle and an
Infused Alloy in each corner. An
Advanced Control Circuit goes above and below the casing, and there’s a
Bucket on the left and the right of it.
The two circuits are what you’ll be waiting on, as it’s one of the first machines that needs the Advanced ones. Each of them is a
Basic Control Circuit that’s been crafted between two Infused Alloys, or infused with more Redstone, and you’ll find both ways on the Alloys and Control Circuits page.
How It Works

The machine has two input slots, one above the other, with the dust going in the top one and an
Osmium Ingot going in the one below it. The ingot is turned into 200 mB of Osmium inside the machine, and that’s exactly what one item uses, so it’ll always cost you one ingot for every ingot that comes out.
How Much Osmium It Uses
The Osmium is used up a little at a time while the bar fills, rather than all at once at the end. So if you take the dust out halfway through, the Osmium that’s already been spent on it is lost, which is different to how the
Metallurgic Infuser works.
The tank inside the compressor only holds 210 mB, and a
Block of Osmium is worth 1,800 mB, which has to go in all at once. So a block will just sit in the slot and nothing will happen, by our reading of the code, and you’ll want to feed it with ingots instead.
Speed Upgrades won’t change how much Osmium is used, as it’s always the same 200 mB for each item, however fast the machine is running. That’s different to the chemical machines on the Ore Processing page, where going faster uses a lot more of the chemical.
Recipes

Both of the recipes work in the same way, and this is the only machine that’s able to make either ingot from its dust. The dust for the first one comes out of the
Metallurgic Infuser, whereas the second one is just normal
Glowstone Dust.
| Makes | Dust | Osmium | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Refined Obsidian Ingot | Refined Obsidian Dust | 1 Osmium Ingot (200 mB) | 10 seconds |
| Refined Glowstone Ingot | Glowstone Dust | 1 Osmium Ingot (200 mB) | 10 seconds |
The
Refined Obsidian Ingot is the one that you’ll make the most of, as it’s needed for the last tier of ore machines and for
Teleporter Frames. A
Refined Glowstone Ingot goes into those frames as well, and the block made from 9 of them is used in two
Meka-Tool modules. Both metals are covered on the Refined Obsidian and Refined Glowstone page.
If you ever end up with too many ingots, a
Crusher is able to turn them back into the dust that they were made from. You won’t get the Osmium back when you do that though, so it’s better to only compress as many as you need at the time.
Upgrades and Automation
The compressor takes Speed, Energy and
Muffling Upgrades, which are on the Machine Upgrades page, and it won’t take a
Chemical Upgrade. With all eight
Speed Upgrades in, each ingot is done in a single second, though you’ll want
Energy Upgrades in there as well to keep the power draw down.
For automation, the dust is able to go in through the top, front or left. The right side is the output and the bottom is where the
Osmium Ingots go in, so you’ll need two separate pipes for the two inputs. Finished ingots aren’t pushed out by default either, so auto-eject has to be switched on before they’ll leave on their own.
Compressing Factory
It can be upgraded into a Compressing Factory with a Tier Installer, which works on several dusts at once and shares one Osmium tank between them. That tank grows with every tier, and it’s only the Ultimate one that’s big enough to take a
Block of Osmium. The
Refined Obsidian that it’s fed with comes from the Refined Obsidian chain, which is the next thing to set up.
FAQ
It’s used to make
Refined Obsidian Ingots and
Refined Glowstone Ingots, and those are the only two things it’s able to do. The first one needs
Refined Obsidian Dust and the second needs
Glowstone Dust, and both of them use up one
Osmium Ingot for each ingot that’s made.
Each item takes 200 mB of Osmium, which is what you’ll get from putting a single Osmium Ingot in the bottom slot. That doesn’t change with
Speed Upgrades, so it’s always one ingot in for one ingot out, and the tank only holds enough for one item at a time.
It works with pipes like any other machine, with the dust going in through the top, front or left and the Osmium Ingots going in through the bottom. The finished ingots come out on the right, though you’ll need to turn auto-eject on in the side configuration tab first, as it’s switched off by default.
It’s usually missing the Osmium, as the machine needs an Osmium Ingot in the lower slot as well as the dust in the top one. A
Block of Osmium won’t work in there, as it’s worth more than the tank is able to hold. It also needs 40 FE/t of power, so check that it’s connected.
