The Metallurgic Infuser is the first Mekanism machine that you’ll be able to build, as its recipe doesn’t need any Steel or a Control Circuit. It’s used to infuse an item with a substance like Carbon or Redstone, which is how you’ll make Steel, the three alloys and your first circuits.
You’re able to craft it from 4
Iron Ingots, 2
Furnaces, 2
Redstone Dust and a single
Osmium Ingot, so it only needs a little mining to get started. Once it’s placed, it’ll need 20 FE/t (50 J/t) of power to run, and each item takes 10 seconds to finish.
How to Make It
The
Metallurgic Infuser is crafted with an
Osmium Ingot in the middle, an
Iron Ingot in each corner, a
Furnace above and below, and
Redstone Dust on the left and right. The Osmium Ingot comes from smelting
Raw Osmium, which you’ll find in the Overworld on the Ores and Metals page.
It won’t do anything until it has power, and you won’t have any cables yet, as they need Steel. So the first
Heat Generator has to be placed with its front touching the Infuser, as that’s the only face it’ll send power out of.

If you don’t have a generator at all, you’re able to put Redstone Dust into the energy slot on the right of the screen instead. Each piece is turned into 4,000 FE, which happens to be exactly enough to infuse one item, so a few of them will get your first Steel made.
How It Works
There are two inputs, with the item you want to change going in the main slot and the substance going in the infusion slot on the left. The Infuser has a tank that’ll hold 1,000 mB of one substance at a time, and anything you put in that slot is converted and added to it, as long as there’s room for all of it.

The substance is only taken out of the tank when an item finishes, so nothing is wasted if you pull the item out halfway through. It’s also why a
Speed Upgrade won’t change how much each recipe costs, which isn’t the case for the chemical machines later in ore processing.
| Substance | Plain Item | Enriched Item | Used For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carbon | Coal 10 mB, Charcoal 20 mB | Enriched Carbon 80 mB | Enriched Iron, Steel Dust |
| Redstone | Redstone Dust 10 mB | Enriched Redstone 80 mB | Infused Alloy, Basic and Advanced Control Circuits |
| Diamond | Diamond Dust 10 mB | Enriched Diamond 80 mB | Reinforced Alloy, Refined Obsidian Dust, Elite Control Circuit |
| Refined Obsidian | Refined Obsidian Dust 10 mB | Enriched Obsidian 80 mB | Atomic Alloy, Ultimate Control Circuit |
| Tin | Tin Dust 10 mB | Enriched Tin 80 mB | Bronze |
| Gold | Gold Dust 10 mB | Enriched Gold 80 mB | Netherite Dust, Gilded Blackstone |
| Biomass | Bio Fuel 5 mB | None | Slime Balls, Dirt, Podzol, mossy blocks |
| Fungi | Any mushroom or fungus 10 mB | None | Mycelium, Nylium |
A
Block of Coal or a
Block of Redstone will work as well, and they’re worth 90 mB each, which is the same as nine of the plain item. A
Diamond or a
Tin Ingot can’t go in the slot as they are, as they have to be crushed into dust in a
Crusher first.
Enriched Items
You’ll get eight times as much out of the same item by putting it through an
Enrichment Chamber first. That turns one
Coal into an
Enriched Carbon, which is worth 80 mB instead of 10 mB, and the same goes for
Redstone Dust, a Diamond,
Refined Obsidian Dust,
Gold Dust and
Tin Dust.
Enriched Gold and
Enriched Tin are the two that you’ll use the least, as they’re made from Gold Dust and Tin Dust and only go into a few recipes. It’s the Diamond one that matters the most, as a single
Enriched Diamond is enough for four
Reinforced Alloys, where a
Diamond Dust wouldn’t even cover one.
Recipes
Most of what the Infuser makes is a step on the way to something else, and the two that you’ll want first are Steel and the
Basic Control Circuit. The table below has the recipes that the rest of the mod is built on, and each one takes a single item unless it says otherwise.
| Makes | Item | Substance |
|---|---|---|
| Enriched Iron | Iron Ingot | 10 mB Carbon |
| Steel Dust | Enriched Iron | 10 mB Carbon |
| Basic Control Circuit | Osmium Ingot | 20 mB Redstone |
| Infused Alloy | Copper Ingot | 10 mB Redstone |
| Reinforced Alloy | Infused Alloy | 20 mB Diamond |
| Atomic Alloy | Reinforced Alloy | 40 mB Refined Obsidian |
| Advanced Control Circuit | Basic Control Circuit | 60 mB Redstone |
| Elite Control Circuit | Advanced Control Circuit | 120 mB Diamond |
| Ultimate Control Circuit | Elite Control Circuit | 240 mB Refined Obsidian |
| Refined Obsidian Dust | Obsidian Dust | 10 mB Diamond |
| 4 Bronze Ingots | 3 Copper Ingots | 10 mB Tin |
| Netherite Dust | 4 Netherite Scrap | 40 mB Gold |
Steel is made by running the same
Iron Ingot through twice, once to get
Enriched Iron and then again to get
Steel Dust, which you’ll smelt in a normal
Furnace. You only need the one Infuser for it, as both steps use Carbon, so you’re able to just put the Enriched Iron back in.

The
Infused Alloy uses a
Copper Ingot here, whereas it was an Iron Ingot on 1.20.1, so older guides will have that one wrong. There’s more on the alloys and the two ways to make each circuit on the Alloys and Control Circuits page.
Remember, the Netherite recipe doesn’t need any
Gold Ingots, as it takes 4
Netherite Scrap and 40 mB of Gold from the tank. That’s four
Gold Dust, or half of an Enriched Gold, and the
Netherite Dust will smelt straight into a
Netherite Ingot.
Upgrades and Automation
The Infuser takes Speed, Energy and
Muffling Upgrades, which you’ll find on the Machine Upgrades page, and it doesn’t take the
Chemical Upgrade. Eight
Speed Upgrades will bring an item down from 10 seconds to 1 second, but it’ll draw a lot more power, so you’ll want to add
Energy Upgrades alongside them.
By default, the item you’re infusing is able to go in through the top, front or left. The right side is the output, the bottom feeds the infusion slot and the back only reaches the energy slot. Nothing will come out on its own though, as items aren’t ejected until you turn that on in the side configuration tab, which is covered on the
Configurator page.
Later on, the Infuser can be turned into an Infusing Factory, which will work on several items at once from the same tank. That’s done with a Tier Installer, and you’ll find the details on the Factories and Tier Installers page. For now though, the next thing to make with it is Steel.
FAQ
It needs 20 FE/t, and the easiest way to get that early on is a
Heat Generator placed with its front against the Infuser, as you won’t have cables until you’ve made Steel. You can also put
Redstone Dust in the energy slot, which gives 4,000 FE each, and that’s enough for one item.
The infusion slot only takes a
Diamond once it’s been turned into
Diamond Dust in a
Crusher, or into an
Enriched Diamond in an
Enrichment Chamber. The enriched one is worth 80 mB instead of 10 mB, so it’s the better one to use, and the same rule applies to
Tin Ingots and
Gold Ingots as well.
One Infuser is able to do both steps, as each of them uses 10 mB of Carbon. You’ll infuse an
Iron Ingot to get
Enriched Iron, then put that back into the same machine to get
Steel Dust, which smelts into a
Steel Ingot. A second Infuser just saves you from moving the items by hand.
There’s a dump button underneath the infusion slot on the machine’s screen, which will throw away whatever is stored in it. You’ll need to do that when you want to switch substance, like going from Carbon to Redstone, as the tank is only able to hold one of them at a time.
