Mekanism has a handful of crafting components that don’t do anything when they’re placed, and they’re only there to go into other recipes. The Steel Casing is the main one, as it’s the block in the middle of most machines, and you’ll want to keep a few of them crafted ahead of time.
The other two on this page are the Energy Tablet, which doubles up as a small battery, and the Electrolytic Core, which is only needed for a few things. All three are crafted by hand from ingots, alloys and dusts, so you won’t need a special machine for any of them.
How to Get It
Steel Casing
A
Steel Casing is crafted with an
Osmium Ingot in the middle, a
Steel Ingot in each corner and
Glass in the four gaps between them. The Steel is the slow part early on, as each ingot has to go through the
Metallurgic Infuser twice, which you’ll find on the Steel page.
Each craft only makes the one casing, so it works out as four Steel Ingots for every machine that you build with it. It’s the main reason that you’ll want a second Metallurgic Infuser quite early on, as one of them is able to stay on Steel while the other makes your circuits and alloys.
Energy Tablet
The
Energy Tablet takes three
Gold Ingots down the middle column, a
Redstone Dust in each corner and an
Infused Alloy on the left and the right. The alloys are made from
Copper Ingots and Redstone in the Infuser, so the Gold is the only part that you might be short of.
Electrolytic Core
An
Electrolytic Core needs five Infused Alloys, which go in the corners and the middle, with two
Osmium Dust above and below, an
Iron Dust on the left and a
Gold Dust on the right. It’s a lot of alloy for one item, though you’ll only ever need a few of them.
The dusts for it are made by putting an ingot through a Crusher, which will give you one dust back for each of them. So you’ll need a
Crusher running before you can make a core, and it’s the same machine that’ll give you the
Bio Fuel that you’ll want later for making Ethene.
How to Use It
Steel Casing
Nearly every machine that processes something has a Steel Casing in the middle of its recipe, with the circuits, alloys and other parts placed around it. That starts with the
Enrichment Chamber, the
Crusher and the
Energized Smelter, and it carries on all the way up to the
Digital Miner and the
Chemical Dissolution Chamber.
| Component | Goes Into |
|---|---|
| Steel Casing | Enrichment Chamber, Crusher, Energized Smelter, Osmium Compressor, Combiner, most of the chemical machines, Electric Pump, Basic Energy Cube, Digital Miner, Laser |
| Steel Casing (2) | Gas-Burning Generator |
| Steel Casing (4) | Teleporter |
| Energy Tablet | Energy Cubes, Induction Cells, Induction Casing, Wind Generator, Solar Generator, Free Runners, Robit, Atomic Disassembler, Laser |
| Electrolytic Core | Electrolytic Separator, Gas-Burning Generator, Electrolytic Breathing Unit |
There are a few machines that don’t need one, and the Metallurgic Infuser is the important one, as that’s what lets you make Steel before you have any. The
Heat Generator and the
Wind Generator don’t use one either, and the casings for a Fission Reactor are crafted from a Steel Casing and four
Lead Ingots.
Energy Tablet
As a crafting part, you’ll use two Energy Tablets in every tier of Energy Cube and four in every Induction Cell, so they add up fast once you’re building storage. They’re also in a lot of the gear, like the
Free Runners and the
Robit, and in both the Wind Generator and the
Solar Generator.

It works as a battery as well, with each one holding 400,000 FE (1,000,000 J), and it’ll charge up in the charge slot of an Energy Cube. A charged tablet can then be put in the energy slot of any machine to power it, which is handy for something like a
Metallurgic Infuser that’s out of reach of your cables.
Remember, any power that’s stored in an Energy Tablet is carried over when it’s crafted into something else. So crafting with charged tablets will give you an Energy Cube that already has some power in it, and the same goes for tools like the
Atomic Disassembler.
Electrolytic Core
The Electrolytic Core is only needed in three recipes, which are the
Electrolytic Separator, the
Gas-Burning Generator and the
Electrolytic Breathing Unit for the MekaSuit. The first two are what you’ll use to turn Water into Hydrogen and then burn a fuel for power, so you’ll usually make two cores at the same time.
Other Parts You Will Be Asked For
Most recipes will ask for an alloy and a Control Circuit alongside the Steel Casing, and those have their own page, as there’s a lot more to them. You’ll find the three alloys and the four circuits on the Alloys and Control Circuits page, with the two ways of making each circuit.
| Part | What It Is For | Page |
|---|---|---|
| Infused, Reinforced and Atomic Alloy | Every tier above Basic | Alloys and Control Circuits |
| Control Circuits | Machines, factories and Tier Installers | Alloys and Control Circuits |
| Teleportation Core | Teleporter, Quantum Entangloporter, Digital Miner | Teleporter |
| HDPE Sheet | MekaSuit, Meka-Tool, modules | HDPE |
| Module Base | Every MekaSuit and Meka-Tool module | Modification Station |
| Refined Obsidian Ingot | Teleporter Frames, 5x ore machines | Refined Obsidian |
Remember, a Basic recipe with an alloy slot in it is only asking for
Redstone Dust, as there isn’t a Basic alloy to make. With a few Steel Casings and Energy Tablets put aside, the next thing to build is somewhere to keep your power, which is the Energy Cube.
FAQ
A Steel Casing is crafted from four
Steel Ingots in the corners, four
Glass on the sides and an
Osmium Ingot in the middle. The Steel comes from the
Metallurgic Infuser, where an
Iron Ingot is infused with Carbon twice and then smelted, so you’ll need that machine built before you can make your first casing.
It’s mostly a crafting part, as it goes into Energy Cubes, Induction Cells, the
Wind Generator and a lot of the gear. It’s also a small battery that holds 400,000 FE, so you’re able to charge it in an Energy Cube and then drop it in a machine’s energy slot, like you would with
Redstone Dust.
The Metallurgic Infuser is one of the few machines that doesn’t have a Steel Casing in its recipe, as it’s crafted from Iron Ingots,
Furnaces, Redstone Dust and an Osmium Ingot. That’s on purpose, as you need the Infuser to make Steel in the first place, and the
Heat Generator doesn’t need one either.
Only the
Electrolytic Separator and the
Gas-Burning Generator need one, along with the
Electrolytic Breathing Unit, which is a module for the
MekaSuit Helmet. Each core takes five
Infused Alloys and four dusts, so they aren’t cheap, but you’ll only ever need to make a few of them.
