The Supercritical Phase Shifter, or SPS, is a Mekanism multiblock that turns Polonium into Antimatter, and it’s the only way to make Antimatter in the mod. It’s a fixed 7x7x7 shell that’s built from
SPS Casing, with
SPS Ports in the faces and at least one
Supercharged Coil inside.
To set it up, you’ll pipe Polonium into one port, send power into a port that has a coil behind it, and take the Antimatter out of a port that’s been switched to output. Each mB of Antimatter costs 1,000 mB of Polonium and 400 million FE (1 billion J), so this is very much an endgame machine.
How to Build It
Every
SPS Casing is crafted from 4
HDPE Sheets, 4
Polonium Pellets and a
Plutonium Pellet, and the recipe only gives one. An
SPS Port is then 4 casings around an
Ultimate Control Circuit, whereas the
Supercharged Coil needs 3
Copper Ingots, 2 Ultimate Control Circuits, a
Laser and 3 more Polonium Pellets.
The shell is 186 blocks, so even with only 2 ports you’ll be crafting 192 casings, which is 768 Polonium Pellets and 192 Plutonium Pellets. Both pellets come from the waste of a Fission Reactor, and the Nuclear Waste page covers how they’re made, so expect a reactor to be running for a long time before there’s enough.
The Shape
The SPS is a 7x7x7 cube with its corners rounded off, and the 5x5x5 space inside is left as air apart from the coils. Each face is a 7×7 square with 3 blocks missing from every corner, which is the same on all 6 sides, so it’s easiest to build it one layer at a time.
| Layer | Shape | Blocks |
|---|---|---|
| 1 and 7 | A 7×7 square with 3 blocks cut from each corner | 37 |
| 2 and 6 | A 7×7 ring with 3 blocks cut from each corner | 20 |
| 3, 4 and 5 | A full 7×7 ring | 24 |
Ports are able to go anywhere in the 5×5 that’s in the middle of a face, apart from its 4 corners, and everything else has to be casing. There’s no controller block here, so once the shell is complete, you’re able to right-click any casing or port to open the screen.
Placing the Coil
A Supercharged Coil has to sit inside the shell, directly behind an SPS Port, so it’s touching the inside face of that port. If a coil is placed anywhere else, the SPS won’t form at all, and you’ll get a message saying it found a coil without a connection to an SPS Port. Nothing else is allowed inside, which includes blocks you might have used to stand on while building.
How It Works
Power only gets into the SPS through a port that has a coil behind it, as a port without one will never pass any on. Each of those ports holds up to 400 million FE and hands all of it to the SPS every tick, as long as there’s Polonium to work on and room for more Antimatter.

There’s no speed setting, as the SPS will simply work as fast as the power arrives. It spends 400,000 FE on each mB of Polonium, and after 1,000 mB of it you’ll get 1 mB of Antimatter. A single coil is able to handle a full 1 mB of Antimatter per tick, so extra coils won’t help until you’re feeding it more than 400 million FE/t.
| Power In | Polonium Used | Time per Antimatter Pellet |
|---|---|---|
| 1,000,000 FE/t | 2.5 mB/t | About 5 hours 33 minutes |
| 5,000,000 FE/t | 12.5 mB/t | About 67 minutes |
| 19,600,000 FE/t | 49 mB/t | About 17 minutes |
The last row is a Fusion Reactor running flat out, which is the kind of power an SPS is built for. Polonium is usually what runs short though, as it’s made from Nuclear Waste at 10 to 1 in a
Solar Neutron Activator, so 1 mB of Antimatter is 10,000 mB of waste.
If you want to check your own power figure, put it into the calculator below. It’ll tell you how long each Antimatter Pellet is going to take and how much Polonium and Nuclear Waste that uses, and it also counts the pellets and
HDPE Sheets you’ll need for the shell.

Polonium In, Antimatter Out
The SPS holds 2,000 mB of Polonium and 1,000 mB of Antimatter, and any port will carry either of them. Ports start as inputs, so you’ll need to sneak and right-click one with a
Configurator to switch it to output, and it’ll then push the Antimatter into a tube or tank by itself.
While the SPS is running, anything inside the 5x5x5 space takes damage about once a second, and the more power it’s using, the more it deals. It’s enough to kill a player instantly at any real power level, so cut the power before you go in to move a coil.
Polonium is radioactive, so it can’t be kept in a Chemical Tank, and you’ll want to pipe it straight from the activators into the SPS through Pressurized Tubes. Antimatter isn’t radioactive at all, which means it’s safe to store in normal Chemical Tanks once it’s out.
Antimatter Pellets

To turn the Antimatter into an item, it needs to go through a
Chemical Crystallizer, which makes one
Antimatter Pellet from 1,000 mB. That’s a million mB of Polonium and 400 billion FE for each pellet. A
Chemical Oxidizer will turn one back into 1,000 mB of Antimatter, and the pellets themselves are only used in a handful of recipes at the very end of the mod.
Antimatter Line
Two pellets go into the
Antiprotonic Nucleosynthesizer, which then runs on Antimatter itself. The rest are used for the
Supermassive QIO Drive, the largest drive for a QIO system, the
Elytra Unit and
Gravitational Modulating Unit for the
MekaSuit Bodyarmor, and the
Teleportation Unit for the
Meka-Tool.
Upgrades and Automation
The SPS doesn’t take any upgrades, and the only way to speed it up is by giving it more power and more Polonium. A Comparator placed against a port will read how full the Polonium tank is, which is handy for seeing when the supply can’t keep up.
As it’ll use every bit of power it’s given, it’s worth feeding the coil port from its own line instead of your main network, or it’ll drain an Induction Matrix dry. Once Antimatter is coming out, the next machine to build is the
Antiprotonic Nucleosynthesizer.
FAQ
Build the 7x7x7 shell from SPS Casing, put SPS Ports in the faces and place a Supercharged Coil inside, directly behind one of them. Then pipe Polonium in, send power into the port with the coil, and switch another port to output with a
Configurator to get the Antimatter out.
Antimatter only comes from the SPS, which turns 1,000 mB of Polonium and 400 million FE into 1 mB of it. You’ll then need a
Chemical Crystallizer to make an Antimatter Pellet, which takes 1,000 mB.
It’s usually a coil that isn’t touching the inside of a port, as every Supercharged Coil has to be directly behind one. A port placed on an edge, a missing casing or any other block left inside the shell will stop it as well.
It doesn’t have a set draw, as it’ll take whatever arrives, up to 400 million FE/t for each coil. What stays the same is the cost, which is 400 million FE for every mB of Antimatter, so a pellet works out at 400 billion FE.
