Chemical Dissolution Chamber

The Chemical Dissolution Chamber is a Mekanism machine that dissolves ore in Sulfuric Acid, and it's the first of the 3 machines needed for 5x ore processing. An ore block becomes 1,000 mB of Dirty Slurry in 5 seconds, using 160 FE/t and around 100 mB of acid, and the slurry is a chemical, so it has to be piped into a Chemical Washer with a Pressurized Tube. It's crafted from Refined Obsidian Ingots, Ultimate Control Circuits, Basic Chemical Tanks and a Steel Casing. Raw ore goes in 3 at a time for 2,000 mB, and a block of raw ore gives 6,000 mB. The same machine turns Fluorite into Hydrofluoric Acid, which is needed for Fissile Fuel.

The Chemical Dissolution Chamber is a Mekanism machine that’s used to dissolve an ore block in Sulfuric Acid, which turns it into 1,000 mB of Dirty Slurry. It’s the first of the 3 machines that make up 5x ore processing, and it needs around 100 mB of acid and 160 FE/t (400 J/t) to work.

Unlike the machines before it, nothing comes out of this one as an item. The slurry is a chemical, so it has to be piped into a Chemical Washer and then a Chemical Crystallizer before you’ll have anything to pick up, and all 3 are needed before the 5x line will do anything.

How to Make It

It’s crafted from 4 Refined Obsidian Ingots, 2 Ultimate Control Circuits, 2 Basic Chemical Tanks and a Steel Casing in the middle. The ingots go in the 4 corners, with the Chemical Tanks above and below the casing and a circuit on either side of it.

The Ultimate Control Circuits are what hold most players back here, as each one needs 2 Atomic Alloy on top of an Elite Control Circuit. The Chemical Washer and Chemical Crystallizer use 2 of them each as well, so you’ll be making 6 circuits before the 5x line is finished.

How It Works

The Chemical Dissolution Chamber has an item slot for the ore and 2 tanks, with one holding the Sulfuric Acid going in and the other holding the slurry coming out, and both hold 10,000 mB. It’s faster than the earlier machines, as an operation only takes 5 seconds, and at 160 FE/t that makes it 16,000 FE for each ore.

There are 7 types of Dirty Slurry, one for each of Iron, Gold, Copper, Osmium, Tin, Lead and Uranium. Each one is its own chemical and they won’t mix in the output tank, so the machine will stop if you switch from one ore to another while the old slurry is still sitting in it.

The slurry has to be piped out

The slurry is pushed out of the machine’s right side by default, but only when there’s a Pressurized Tube there to take it. Without one the tank fills up after 10 ore blocks and the machine stops, so run that tube to the Chemical Washer, or pick another output side in the Side Configuration tab.

How Much Sulfuric Acid It Uses

Sulfuric Acid is taken a little at a time while the machine is working, and it adds up to around 100 mB for each ore block. The amount is rolled on every tick, so it tends to come out just under that, at about 90 mB on average, which means a full tank of acid will last for roughly 100 ores.

Making the acid

The acid itself is made in a Chemical Infuser from Sulfur Trioxide and Water Vapor, and it starts with Sulfur Dust in a Chemical Oxidizer. One Sulfur Dust ends up as 100 mB of Sulfuric Acid when it’s made that way, which is enough for a single ore block.

Sulfur Dust in the chemical slot

You’re able to drop Sulfur Dust straight into the chemical slot of the machine as well, but then each one is only worth 2 mB. That’s 50 times less than you’d get from the full chain, so it’d take around 45 Sulfur Dust for one ore, and it’s only useful for checking that the machine works.

Recipes

The amount of slurry depends on what goes in, and it takes 200 mB of slurry to make a Crystal later on. So an ore block is worth 5 Crystals, 3 pieces of raw ore are worth 10, and a block of raw ore is worth 30 for only twice the acid.

1 ore block1,000 mB Dirty SlurryAbout 100 mB
3 raw ore2,000 mB Dirty SlurryAbout 100 mB
1 block of raw ore6,000 mB Dirty SlurryAbout 200 mB
1 Fluorite1,000 mB Hydrofluoric AcidAbout 100 mB
1 Block of Fluorite9,000 mB Hydrofluoric AcidAbout 900 mB

Raw ore has to go in 3 at a time, the same as it does in the Chemical Injection Chamber. The 2 Fluorite recipes have nothing to do with ore, as Hydrofluoric Acid is used to make Fissile Fuel for a Fission Reactor, so you might build a second machine just for that.

Upgrades and Automation

It takes Speed, Energy, Muffling and Chemical upgrades. Speed Upgrades push the acid cost up, with all 8 using around 1,000 mB for every ore, whereas 8 Chemical Upgrades on their own will bring it down to about 10 mB.

This machine is rarely the slow part of the line though, as it’ll dissolve an ore every 5 seconds while a Chemical Washer needs 50 seconds to clean the slurry from it. Chemical Upgrades are the better pick here, and the Speed Upgrades are more useful on the Washer.

There’s no factory version of the Chemical Dissolution Chamber, so the only ways to get more out of it are upgrades or a second machine. Sulfuric Acid goes in through a Pressurized Tube and the slurry leaves through another, with the Chemical Washer being where it needs to go next.

FAQ

How do you get Sulfuric Acid for the Chemical Dissolution Chamber?
›

Sulfuric Acid is made from Sulfur Dust, which is first turned into Sulfur Dioxide in a Chemical Oxidizer. That goes into a Chemical Infuser with Oxygen to make Sulfur Trioxide, and then into a second Chemical Infuser with Water Vapor. One Sulfur Dust will give you 100 mB of acid this way, which is enough for one ore block.

Why is nothing coming out of the Chemical Dissolution Chamber?
›

The output is a chemical called Dirty Slurry, so it’ll never show up as an item in a slot. It stays in the output tank until a Pressurized Tube is connected to the output side, which is the right of the machine unless you’ve changed it. If the tank is already full, or holds slurry from a different ore, the machine won’t run either.

Is 5x ore processing worth it?
›

An ore block gives 5 ingots at 5x instead of 4, but it takes 3 more machines, as well as Sulfuric Acid and 5 buckets of Water for every ore. Each of the 5 Crystals also needs Hydrogen Chloride and Oxygen further down the line. It makes more sense for metals you’re short on, like Osmium or Uranium, than for everything.

Can you put raw ore in the Chemical Dissolution Chamber?
›

Raw ore works, but it has to go in 3 pieces at a time, which are dissolved into 2,000 mB of Dirty Slurry. That’s enough for 10 Crystals, so it works out at a little over 3 ingots for each piece. A block of raw ore gives 6,000 mB in one go, which is 30 Crystals, and it only uses about 200 mB of acid.
