The
Crusher is a Mekanism machine that grinds items down, where ingots and gems become dust,
Obsidian becomes
Obsidian Dust and almost any plant becomes
Bio Fuel. It uses 20 FE/t (50 J/t) and takes 10 seconds for each item, the same as the other basic machines.
It’s also a part of every ore processing line from 3x upwards, as it’s the machine that turns Clumps into Dirty Dust. You’ll want one early on anyway, since
Refined Obsidian and the
Bio-Generator both start with it.
How to Make It
The recipe is a
Steel Casing in the middle with a
Lava Bucket on either side, 2
Basic Control Circuits above and below, and 4
Redstone Dust in the corners. Only the Lava is used up, so the two empty
Buckets will be left in the crafting grid for you to take back.
Once it’s placed, it works in the same way as the other single-block machines, with one slot to put items in and one for them to come out of. You’ll only need to give it some power to get it going, which can come from a generator that’s touching it or through a Universal Cable.
How It Works
Anything that you put into it will be crushed after 10 seconds, and it uses 4,000 FE to do each one. Most of its recipes are one for one, so an ingot gives a single dust and an
Iron Clump gives a single
Dirty Iron Dust, and it’s only a few like
Obsidian that give more.

In an ore line it sits between the
Purification Chamber and the Enrichment Chamber. The Clumps are sent into it and come out as Dirty Dust, which the
Enrichment Chamber is then able to clean up. So the Crusher never changes how many ingots you’ll get, it’s just a step that the items have to pass through.
Recipes
These are the recipes that matter the most, and they all take the same 10 seconds. Every metal ingot in the mod can be crushed back into its dust as well, which includes Steel, Bronze,
Refined Obsidian and Netherite.
| Input | Output |
|---|---|
| Clump | 1 Dirty Dust |
| Any metal ingot | 1 dust |
| Obsidian | 4 Obsidian Dust |
| Ancient Debris | 3 Dirty Netherite Scrap |
| Coal or Charcoal | 1 Coal Dust or Charcoal Dust |
| Diamond, Emerald, Lapis Lazuli, Nether Quartz or Fluorite | 1 dust |
| Blaze Rod | 4 Blaze Powder |
| Bone | 6 Bone Meal |
| Wool | 4 String |
| Cobblestone, then Gravel | Gravel, then Sand |
| Flint | 1 Gunpowder |
It also has recipes for turning polished stone back into its plain version and
Stone into
Cobblestone, and it’s able to scrape the wax off Copper blocks. The three below are the ones that are worth a closer look, as they each feed a later part of the mod.
Obsidian and Gem Dusts
Obsidian gives 4
Obsidian Dust, which is the first step in making Refined Obsidian. On 1.20.1 that recipe belonged to the
Enrichment Chamber instead, so older guides will send you to the wrong machine.
The gem dusts are mostly there for the
Metallurgic Infuser and the
Combiner.
Diamond Dust is the one you’ll use, as it’s worth 10 mB of
Diamond for alloys, whereas
Emerald Dust,
Lapis Lazuli Dust and
Quartz Dust can only be enriched back into the gem or combined into an ore block.
Ancient Debris
When
Ancient Debris is crushed, it will give you 3
Dirty Netherite Scrap, and each of those can be cleaned into a
Netherite Scrap in the Enrichment Chamber. That’s 3 scrap from the one block, whereas putting the Ancient Debris straight into the Enrichment Chamber only gives 2, so it’s worth doing the extra step.
Bio Fuel

Nearly every plant, crop and food item in the game can be crushed into
Bio Fuel, which is used to run a
Bio-Generator and to make Ethene later on. The amount that you’ll get depends on what went in, as the bigger foods are worth a lot more than something like seeds.
| Input | Bio Fuel |
|---|---|
| Seeds, saplings, berries, mushrooms, small flowers, Sugar Cane | 1 |
| 10 leaves | 1 |
| Wheat, Carrot, Potato, Beetroot, Nether Wart, Cactus, Cocoa Beans | 2 |
| Apple, Baked Potato, Bamboo, Kelp, tall flowers | 2 |
| Bread or a mushroom block | 4 |
| Melon, Pumpkin or Cake | 6 |
| Pumpkin Pie | 7 |
| Hay Bale | 2 Blocks of Bio Fuel (18) |
A
Hay Bale comes out as
Block of Bio Fuel instead of loose items, and you’ll get 2 of them, which is the same 2 for each
Wheat that went into it. Most of these numbers were higher on 1.20.1, where Wheat gave 5 and
Bread gave 7, although a
Melon or
Pumpkin only gave 5 there.
Upgrades and Automation
It takes up to 8
Speed Upgrades, 8
Energy Upgrades and a
Muffling Upgrade. A full set of Speed Upgrades will crush an item every second, but it uses 2,000 FE/t to do it, which the Energy Upgrades bring back down to 200 FE/t.
Auto-eject is off until you turn it on in the side configuration tab, so a Crusher in a line won’t pass anything along at first. It can also be upgraded into a Crushing Factory when one machine isn’t enough, and the
Energized Smelter is the machine that usually goes at the end of the same line.
FAQ
It turns Clumps into Dirty Dust for 3x ore processing and above, and it crushes ingots and gems into dust. It’s the only way to get
Obsidian Dust for
Refined Obsidian as well, and it makes
Bio Fuel from plants and food for the
Bio-Generator.
It’s crafted from a
Steel Casing, 2
Lava Buckets, 2
Basic Control Circuits and 4
Redstone Dust. The casing needs Steel and Osmium, and the circuits come from a
Metallurgic Infuser, so you’ll have to build that machine first.
Ores aren’t doubled by the Crusher, as it doesn’t have any recipes for ore blocks or raw ore. The
Enrichment Chamber is the one that doubles them.
Ancient Debris is the exception, as crushing it gives 3
Dirty Netherite Scrap instead of the 2 scrap from enriching it.
It depends on what goes in, as seeds, saplings and
Sugar Cane only give 1 Bio Fuel each, whereas
Wheat,
Carrots and
Potatoes give 2. A
Melon or
Pumpkin gives 6, and a
Hay Bale gives 2 blocks, which is 18 Bio Fuel. Most of these amounts were higher on older versions of the mod, although the Melon and Pumpkin have gone up.
