Wild Crops

Wild Crops are the plants from the Farmer's Delight mod that grow on their own across the Overworld, and they're where your first Cabbage Seeds, Tomato Seeds, Onions and Rice will come from. Wild Cabbage and Sea Beet grow on beaches, Tomato Shrubs in Deserts and Savannas, Wild Onions and Wild Carrots in milder biomes like Plains, Wild Potatoes in Taigas, and Wild Rice in shallow water in Swamps and Jungles. They won't grow by themselves, but Bone Meal has an 80% chance to spread one to a block nearby, up to 10 in a patch. Breaking them gives you seeds or vegetables, while Shears will keep the plant itself for replanting or for a Cutting Board.

Farmer’s Delight Mod Wiki Updated 6 min read

Wild Crops are the wild versions of the Farmer’s Delight crops, and you’ll find them growing on their own across the Overworld in small patches, mixed in with grass, flowers or Sandy Shrubs. Breaking them is the main way you’ll get your first Cabbage Seeds, Tomato Seeds, Onions and Rice, so they’re usually the first thing you’ll go looking for once the mod is installed.

There are seven of them, one for each of the mod’s four crops and one each for Carrots, Potatoes and Beetroot, plus the Sandy Shrub, which grows beside a couple of them on beaches. None of them will grow into anything by themselves, but you’re able to spread them with Bone Meal and pick them up with Shears to replant them somewhere else.

Finding It

Each Wild Crop has its own set of biomes, and some of them are a lot easier to find than others. Wild Rice is the most common by a long way, whereas Wild Carrots and Wild Onions are the rarest, so you might have to explore for a while before you come across either of them.

Wild Carrots and Wild Onions aren’t tied to a list of biomes, as they’ll generate in any Overworld biome that isn’t too hot or too cold. That means most of the green biomes you’ll walk through, like Plains, Forests, Meadows and Swamps, whereas Wild Potatoes will only show up in the colder ones, like a Taiga, so you won’t see them in a snowy biome or a regular Forest.

Every patch will have another plant mixed in with it, which makes them a lot easier to spot from a distance. Tomato Shrubs grow with Dead Bushes, Wild Onions with Alliums and Wild Potatoes with Ferns, while Wild Carrots grow with Short Grass on a patch of Coarse Dirt, and Wild Cabbage and Sea Beet will share their beaches with Sandy Shrubs.

Wild Rice is the odd one out, as it’s a plant two blocks tall that only generates in water one block deep, with Dirt or Sand underneath and air above it. You’ll find it in the shallows of Swamps, Mangrove Swamps, Jungles and Beaches, and even though the name suggests otherwise, it won’t generate in Rivers at all.

Tomato Shrubs on 1.20.1

If you’re playing on 1.20.1 Forge, you won’t find Tomato Shrubs in the normal Badlands, as it only counts the Eroded Badlands as a hot biome. They’ll still be in Deserts and Savannas though, and the other Wild Crops are found in the same places on both versions.

Growing

Wild Crops don’t grow or spread on their own, so they’ll stay exactly as they generated until you do something with them. Using Bone Meal on one has an 80% chance to place a copy of it on an empty block close by, as long as the ground there is something it’s able to grow on, like Dirt, Grass or Sand.

Each patch is capped though, so once there are 10 of the same Wild Crop within a few blocks of the one you’re using Bone Meal on, it won’t add any more. That’s still plenty to break for seeds, and if you leave one or two behind, you’ll be able to spread them again later instead of hunting down a new patch.

Wild Rice works differently, as Bone Meal won’t spread it at all. It has a 30% chance to drop a Wild Rice item instead, which means you can keep collecting them from the same plant without ever breaking it, and those can be planted back in shallow water.

Bone Meal on a Sandy Shrub will always work, and it scatters a few more Sandy Shrubs onto the Sand around it, a bit like using it on a Grass Block. They’re not worth much as a crop, but it’s an easy way to fill out a beach or a desert build.

Harvesting

If you break a Wild Crop by hand, or with any tool other than Shears, it will give you its crop or its seeds, and Fortune will add to the main drop. Three of them also have a 20% chance to drop the vegetable itself as well as the seeds, while Wild Onions will throw in a few Alliums.

Wild CarrotCarrotNone
Wild PotatoPotatoNone
Wild OnionOnion1 to 3 Alliums
Wild RiceRiceNone
Sandy Shrub12.5% chance of Beetroot Seeds30% chance of Straw with a Knife

If you break one with Shears, you’ll get the plant itself instead, which can be replanted on Dirt, Grass or Sand anywhere you like. Silk Touch won’t do this, as it only works with Shears, and Wild Rice will need to go back into water one block deep or it won’t stay put.

On a Cutting Board

You can also put them on a Cutting Board and use a Knife on them, which will give you the seed or the vegetable plus some Dye. You’ll need to pick the plant up with Shears first though, as you have to be holding it to put it on the board.

Wild Crops on a Cutting Board (Knife)
Plant Result
Wild Cabbage1 Cabbage Seeds, 50% chance of 2 Yellow Dye
Tomato Shrub1 Tomato Seeds, 20% chance of a Tomato, 10% chance of Green Dye
Sea Beet1 Beetroot Seeds, 1 Red Dye
Wild Carrot1 Carrot, 50% chance of 2 Light Gray Dye
Wild Potato1 Potato, 50% chance of 2 Purple Dye
Wild Onion1 Onion, 2 Magenta Dye, 10% chance of Lime Dye
Wild Rice1 Rice, 50% chance of Straw

Cutting them won’t get you any more seeds than breaking them would, so it’s only worth doing if you’re after the Dye. Wild Onions will always give you 2 Magenta Dye along with the Onion, for example, which is a lot easier than finding Alliums or Lilacs.

Uses

Six of them count as small flowers, so you’re able to use them in Suspicious Stew in place of a flower, along with a Bowl, a Red Mushroom and a Brown Mushroom. Each one gives its own effect for a few seconds, and three of them are helpful while the other three will only hurt you.

Sea BeetWater Breathing (0:08)
Wild CabbageStrength (0:06)
Tomato ShrubPoison (0:10)
Wild PotatoNausea (0:08)

Every Wild Crop can also go into a Composter, with a 65% chance to add a layer, which is the same chance as the farmed vegetables, while a Sandy Shrub only has a 30% chance. Since they never grow, they’re handy as decoration too, though they’ll catch fire quickly if a fire gets near them.

Most of the time though, you’ll want them for the seeds, which start your first Cabbage, Tomato, Onion and Rice farms. Seeds can turn up in village chests and from the Wandering Trader as well, which is covered on the Villages and Loot page, if you’d rather not go searching.

FAQ

Where do you find crops in Farmer’s Delight?
›

Each crop starts out as a Wild Crop, so you’ll need to find Wild Cabbage or Sea Beet on beaches, Tomato Shrubs in Deserts and Savannas, Wild Onions in Plains and Forests, and Wild Rice in shallow water in Swamps and Jungles. Village chests and the Wandering Trader might have some seeds as well.

How do you get seeds in Farmer’s Delight?
›

Breaking a Wild Cabbage gives you Cabbage Seeds and a Tomato Shrub gives you Tomato Seeds, while Wild Onions and Wild Rice drop the Onion and the Rice, which are planted directly. Once you’ve got a farm going, the mature crops will drop more of them.

Do Wild Crops spread on their own?
›

They don’t, as Wild Crops stay exactly as they generated unless you use Bone Meal on them. Bone Meal has an 80% chance to spread them to a block nearby, up to 10 in one patch, whereas Wild Rice will drop a Wild Rice item instead of spreading.

How do you pick up Wild Crops?
›

You’ll need Shears, as breaking them any other way only gives you their seeds or vegetable. Silk Touch won’t work, and once you’ve got the plant, you’re able to replant it on Dirt, Grass or Sand, or cut it on a Cutting Board for Dye.
