Canvas is a crafting material from the Farmer’s Delight mod that you’ll make from
Straw, and it’s used for a lot of the mod’s blocks, like the
Basket, the
Tatami Block and the
Canvas Sign. It can also stand in for Wool,
Leather or
String in a few vanilla recipes, which can be handy early on in a world.
The
Canvas Rug is a thin carpet made from it, and the Canvas Signs come in 16 colors as well as a plain one, with a
Hanging Canvas Sign to match each of them. They work like normal signs, but the dyed ones have a colored background behind the text.
Crafting
Canvas takes 4
Straw in a square, and you’ll get Straw by cutting grass,
Wheat and
Rice with a Knife. One Canvas can then be crafted into 2
Canvas Rugs, and 2 Rugs will turn back into a Canvas if you change your mind.
Canvas can also replace an ingredient in three vanilla recipes. These give you exactly the same item as the normal recipe, so they’re mostly useful when you’re short on Wool,
Leather or
String, or when you’ve got more Straw than you know what to do with.
| Item | Recipe | Replaces |
|---|---|---|
| Painting | 1 Canvas, 8 Sticks | Wool |
| Book | 1 Canvas, 3 Paper | Leather |
| Scaffolding (6) | 1 Canvas, 6 Bamboo | String |
The
Book recipe is the one you’ll use most, as Leather can be hard to find before you’ve got a Cow farm going, and Books are needed for Bookshelves and
Enchanting Tables. The
Painting and
Scaffolding recipes work the same way, with the Canvas going where the Wool or the String would normally go.
How to Use It
Canvas doesn’t do anything on its own, but you’ll need it for a lot of other things in the mod. It goes into the
Basket and
Bamboo Basket, the
Tatami Block and every Canvas Sign, so it’s worth keeping a stack of it around.
It can be burned in a
Furnace as well, where each one smelts two items. That’s the same as the 4
Straw it’s made from would give you, so there’s no reason to craft Canvas just to burn it, and it’s better saved for Tatami or Baskets.
Canvas Rug
The Canvas Rug is a thin layer that sits on the floor like a carpet, and it has a plain straw color. You’ll break it fastest with a Knife, and two of them can be crafted back into a Canvas, so you won’t lose anything if you change the layout of a room.
Canvas Signs
A
Canvas Sign is made from 4 Planks of any wood, 2 Canvas and a
Stick, which gives you 3 signs. The
Hanging Canvas Sign takes 4 Logs, 2 Canvas and 2 Chains instead, and you’ll get 6 of those from one craft.
To color one, put any Canvas Sign in the crafting grid with a dye, and it will change the background to that color. You can do this with signs that are already dyed as well, so a
Red Canvas Sign can be turned into a
Blue Canvas Sign with some
Blue Dye, and the hanging ones work the same way.
| Background | Colors | Text Starts As |
|---|---|---|
| Plain | Undyed Canvas | Black |
| Light | White, Orange, Magenta, Light Blue, Yellow, Lime, Pink, Light Gray, Cyan | Black |
| Dark | Gray, Purple, Blue, Brown, Green, Red, Black | White |
The darker colors start with white text, so you’ll be able to read them without changing anything. Modpacks can change which colors count as dark in the config, so if a sign comes out with black text on a dark background, that’s probably why.

Apart from the background, they work just like normal signs. You can write on both sides, dye the text, make it glow with a
Glow Ink Sac and wax it with
Honeycomb so nobody can edit it, and they can go on walls or stand on the floor, while the hanging ones go under a block or on the side of one.
FAQ
You can, as 3
Paper and 1 Canvas will make a
Book in the crafting grid instead of using
Leather. It’s the same Book you’d get from the normal recipe, so it works for Bookshelves,
Enchanting Tables and
Book and Quills.
Put the Canvas Sign in the crafting grid with any dye, and it will come out with a background in that color. You can redye a sign that’s already colored as well, and Hanging Canvas Signs work the same way.
It’s a decoration that sits on the floor like a carpet, and it has the same plain color as Canvas. You’ll get 2 of them from one Canvas, and they can be turned back into Canvas whenever you like.
