Rotten Tomato

The Rotten Tomato is a throwable item from the Farmer's Delight mod that drops 5% of the time when you harvest a fully grown Tomato plant, whether you pick it or break it, and Fortune won't change the chance. It flies like a Snowball and splatters on whatever it hits without dealing any damage, though it still counts as a hit. Hitting a Pillager or any other raider with one unlocks the Boo! Hiss! advancement. Spares can be crafted into Tomato Seeds, put in a Composter at an 85% chance or fired from a Dispenser, and they stack up to 16.

Farmer’s Delight Mod Wiki Updated 3 min read

The Rotten Tomato is a throwable item from the Farmer’s Delight mod that you’ll sometimes get when picking Tomatoes from a fully grown plant. It works a lot like a Snowball, as you’re able to throw it at mobs and players, and it splatters on whatever it hits without dealing any damage.

You can’t eat it, but it isn’t useless either, as it can be turned back into Tomato Seeds, dropped into a Composter or fired from a Dispenser. There’s an advancement for hitting a raider with one as well, which is the main reason most players keep a few in their inventory.

How to Get It

Every time you harvest a mature Tomato plant there’s a 5% chance a Rotten Tomato will drop alongside the normal Tomatoes, so you’ll get roughly one for every 20 plants you pick. It doesn’t matter whether you right-click the plant to pick it or break it, and it works the same for Tomatoes growing up a Rope.

Fortune won’t raise the chance, as it only adds extra Tomatoes, so the 5% stays the same however you harvest. A big Tomato farm is the best way to build up a stack, and since they stack to 16, you’ll fill one fairly quickly once you have a few rows of vines going.

Not in Any Chests

Rotten Tomatoes don’t show up in chest loot or in Villager trades, so harvesting Tomatoes is the only way to get them in survival. You won’t find them on the Wandering Trader either, even though he sells Tomato Seeds.

How It Works

Right-click with a Rotten Tomato in your hand to throw it, and it will fly in an arc at the same speed as a Snowball. When it lands it bursts into a little splash of particles with a squelch, and it’s gone, so you won’t be able to pick it back up.

If it hits a mob or a player it counts as a hit from you, but it deals no damage at all, a lot like a Snowball does. That makes it handy for pranking friends on a server, or for pulling a mob’s attention from a distance without hurting it.

Uses

The advancement it’s tied to is called Boo! Hiss!, and you’ll get it by hitting any raider with a Rotten Tomato. That includes Pillagers, Vindicators, Evokers, Witches and Ravagers, and the easiest one to find is usually a Pillager at an Outpost or in a patrol.

You can also craft one Rotten Tomato into one Tomato Seeds, the same way a fresh Tomato can be, which is the best use for spares once you’ve got the advancement. In a Composter it has an 85% chance of adding a layer, which is much better than most crops.

A Dispenser will throw them the same way it fires Snowballs, so you’re able to use them in traps or for fun around your base. If you’ve got the Create mod installed, they can be loaded into a Potato Cannon as well, where they deal 2 damage and stick to whatever they hit.

FAQ

How do you get a Rotten Tomato in Farmer’s Delight?
›

Rotten Tomatoes drop when you harvest a fully grown Tomato plant, with a 5% chance each time. That’s about one for every 20 plants, and Fortune won’t improve it, so a large Tomato farm is the easiest way to collect them.

Can you eat a Rotten Tomato?
›

You can’t eat it, as it’s a throwable item rather than a food. Instead you can throw it, craft it into Tomato Seeds, put it in a Composter or load it into a Dispenser, so there’s still a use for every one you get.

What does a Rotten Tomato do when you throw it?
›

It flies like a Snowball and splatters on whatever it hits, without dealing any damage. It still counts as a hit though, so you can use it to get a mob’s attention, prank another player or earn the Boo! Hiss! advancement.

How do you get the Boo! Hiss! advancement?
›

Throw a Rotten Tomato at any raider, like a Pillager, Vindicator, Evoker, Witch or Ravager, and the advancement will unlock as soon as it hits. It doesn’t need to be during a raid, so a Pillager Outpost or a patrol is the quickest place to do it.
