Dog Food and Horse Feed are the two animal foods from the Farmer’s Delight mod, and they’re used to buff your tamed Wolves and mounts instead of feeding you.
Dog Food is cooked in the
Cooking Pot, whereas
Horse Feed is made in a regular
Crafting Table, and both of them will heal the animal you give them to straight back up to full health.
On top of the healing, each one gives the animal a set of effects that last for 5 minutes, which makes them handy before a fight or a long ride. They only work on animals you’ve tamed though, so you won’t be able to use them on a wild Wolf or a Horse that hasn’t been ridden yet.
Dog Food

Dog Food is made in a
Cooking Pot from a
Rotten Flesh, a
Bone Meal, any raw meat and a
Rice, with a
Bowl in the container slot to collect it. The meat can be anything raw, like
Raw Beef or
Raw Mutton, or one of the cut pieces like
Raw Chicken Cuts, so it’s a good use for the smaller scraps.
It will stack to 16, the same as the other bowl meals, and you’ll get the empty Bowl back once you’ve used it. You’re able to eat it yourself as well, as it restores 4 hunger, but you won’t get any of the effects that a Wolf would get from it.
Feeding a Wolf
Right-clicking one of your tamed Wolves while holding Dog Food will feed it to them, and they’ll be healed to full health straight away. They’ll also get Speed, Strength and Resistance for 5 minutes, so a Wolf that’s about to follow you into a fight will hit harder and take less damage while it lasts.
It’s worth feeding Dog Food to your Wolves just before you go into a Pillager Outpost or a dungeon, as the 5 minutes of Strength and Resistance will last for the whole fight. Remember that it only works on Wolves you’ve already tamed with
Bones.
Horse Feed
Horse Feed is crafted from a
Hay Bale or a
Rice Bale, 2
Apples and a
Golden Carrot. You can put them anywhere in the grid, and it’s a good way to use up some of your spare
Rice once you’ve got a paddy going.
Feeding it to one of your tamed mounts will heal it to full health and give it Speed II and Jump Boost for 5 minutes, which makes a big difference on a long trip. Holding Horse Feed will also make Horses, Donkeys and Mules follow you, the same way they would for a Golden Carrot.
Which Mounts Can Eat It
Horse Feed will work on any tamed Horse, Donkey, Mule or Llama, and it will also work on Skeleton Horses and Zombie Horses. You won’t be able to give it to a Trader Llama or a Camel though, so you’ll need to look after those the normal way.

Unlike Dog Food, Horse Feed can’t be eaten by players at all, as it’s only there for animals. It stacks to 16, so you’re able to carry a few in your inventory, or in the chest on a Donkey, without them taking up much space.
Effects
Both foods heal the animal to full health first, and then add their effects on top, which all last for 5 minutes. The table below shows what each one gives to the animal it’s fed to, and these are the same on 1.20.1 and 1.21.1.
| Food | Fed To | Healing | Effects (5:00) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dog Food | Tamed Wolves | Full health | Speed I, Strength I, Resistance I |
| Horse Feed | Tamed Horses, Donkeys, Mules, Llamas | Full health | Speed II, Jump Boost I |
If you eat Dog Food yourself, you won’t get any of these effects, and it will just fill up a bit of your hunger bar like any other food. Hunger is counted in points, where 2 points is one shank on your hunger bar.
Dog Food and Horse Feed
So there’s not much reason to eat it yourself unless you’re really stuck, as most of the cut meats and Ingredients will restore just as much for less work. It’s much better to save it for a Wolf that needs healing, as it will get a full heal and three effects from one bowl.
Best Picks
If you’ve got Wolves that follow you into fights, Dog Food is the one you’ll want to make, as the Strength and Resistance will help to keep them alive for a lot longer. It’s also cheap to make, since you’ll get the
Rotten Flesh and
Bone Meal from the Zombies and Skeletons you’re already killing.
Horse Feed is more useful when you’re travelling, as Speed II and Jump Boost will make a long ride a lot quicker. The
Golden Carrot is the expensive part of the recipe, so it’s worth saving the feed for long trips instead of using it every time you get on your Horse.
