Rope and Safety Net

Rope is a climbable block from the Farmer's Delight mod, made from 2 Straw for 4 Rope, that hangs down from wherever you put it without needing any support. Using more Rope on it adds pieces to the bottom, and sneaking with an empty hand reels the lowest piece back into your inventory. Right-clicking a Rope under a Bell rings it, and Tomato vines climb it to grow three blocks tall. Four Rope make a Safety Net, which cancels all fall damage and bounces you back up, as long as you aren't sneaking when you land. Rope also makes the Rope Fence and Rope Fence Gate, which hold animals like wooden fences do.

Farmer’s Delight Mod Wiki Updated 6 min read

Rope is a climbable block from the Farmer’s Delight mod that you’ll make from Straw, and it hangs straight down from wherever you place it, a bit like a Ladder that doesn’t need a wall. The same Rope is used to make the Safety Net, which stops all fall damage, along with the Rope Fence and the Rope Fence Gate.

Rope is one of the first things you’re able to make once you have a Knife, as Straw comes from cutting grass. It’s also used to grow Tomatoes taller, and it can ring a Bell from below, so it ends up being used for a lot more than just climbing.

Crafting

Two Straw placed one above the other will give you 4 Rope. The other three blocks are all made from that Rope, and a Safety Net can be put back in the crafting grid to get its 4 Rope back if you need them for something else.

The Safety Net takes 4 Rope in a square, and the Rope Fence takes 4 Rope with 2 Sticks down the middle, which makes 3 fences. The Rope Fence Gate is the other way around, with 2 Rope in the middle and 4 Sticks on the sides, and it gives you one gate.

You’ll also find Rope in chests in Mineshafts, Dungeons and Shipwrecks, sometimes as many as 12 at a time. A Lead is made from 5 Straw rather than from Rope, and there’s more on that and everything else Straw is used for on the Straw page.

How to Use It

Rope doesn’t need anything to hold it up, so you can place it under a ledge, on the side of a block or even in the middle of the air. You can climb it the same way you would climb a Ladder, and it has no hitbox, so you’re able to walk straight through it as well.

If you use Rope on a Rope that’s already hanging, a new piece will be added to the very bottom, so you can keep clicking on the top to lower it all the way down a cliff or a mineshaft. It will go through water, but it stops at Lava, or when it reaches a block it can’t replace.

Placing Rope Sideways

Make sure to sneak if you want to place Rope on the side of a hanging Rope instead of at the bottom. Rope placed on the side of a block will tie itself to that block, as well as to walls, Iron Bars and any other Rope next to it.

Rope can be placed in water as well, and flowing water won’t wash it away. Mobs are able to walk through it the same as you can, so hanging it in a doorway or across a path won’t block anything, which makes it handy for decorating a farm or a dock.

Pulling Rope Back Up

If you sneak and right-click a Rope with an empty hand, the lowest piece will go back into your inventory. You can keep doing this to reel the whole thing back up from the top, which saves you from having to climb down and break it all by hand.

You’ll need space in your inventory for the Rope to go into, and modpacks are able to turn this off in the config. Breaking a piece in the middle won’t bring the rest down, though, so you’ll be left with a gap in the Rope rather than losing all of it.

Ringing a Bell

A Rope hanging under a Bell will ring it when you right-click the Rope with an empty hand. This works with up to 24 pieces of Rope between you and the Bell, so you’re able to ring one at the top of a tower from the ground floor.

Tomato Vines

If you place Rope above a Tomato plant, the vine will climb up it as it grows, until the plant is three blocks tall. Breaking the vine will leave the Rope behind, and you’ll get the Tall-mato advancement the first time you harvest one, so there’s more on growing them on the Tomato page.

Safety Net

The Safety Net is a thin layer of Rope that sits halfway up its block. Landing on it from any height will cancel all of your fall damage, and it bounces you back up as well, though you won’t go as high as you fell from, so the bounces will get smaller each time.

Sneaking turns the bounce off, but it also means the net won’t save you, as you’ll take your full fall damage if you’re sneaking when you land. It’s worth remembering this if you’re dropping down a shaft while holding the sneak key to look over the edge.

A Faster Way Down

It’s worth putting a Safety Net at the bottom of a mine shaft or under a tall build, as you can jump straight down instead of climbing. Just let go of the sneak key before you land, and the bounce will settle after a few hops.

Items and other things that fall on it will bounce as well, a little higher than players and mobs do. Safety Nets can be placed in water, and you’ll break them fastest with a Knife, the same as Rope.

Rope Fence and Gate

The Rope Fence is a thin post with Rope strung between each one, so it looks lighter than a wooden fence. It joins up with other Rope Fences, Rope Fence Gates and the sides of solid blocks, but it won’t connect to an Oak Fence or any other wooden fence.

It still blocks mobs the same way a normal fence does, as players and animals aren’t able to jump over it. You can tie a Lead to it as well, so it works for an animal pen, and you’ll break it fastest with an Axe.

The Rope Fence Gate opens and closes like any other fence gate, with its own sound when it’s tied or untied. It won’t link up with wooden fences either, so you’ll want to use it with Rope Fences, and it drops down to fit when it’s placed between two walls.

FAQ

How do you make Rope in Farmer’s Delight?
›

Put 2 Straw on top of each other in a crafting grid and you’ll get 4 Rope. Straw comes from cutting grass, Wheat or Rice with a Knife, so you’ll want to make a Flint Knife first if you don’t have one.

Does the Safety Net stop fall damage?
›

The Safety Net cancels all fall damage from any height, and it bounces you back up a bit as well. It won’t work if you’re sneaking when you land though, as you’ll take your full fall damage instead.

How do you pull Rope back up?
›

Sneak and right-click the Rope with an empty hand, and the lowest piece will go back into your inventory. You can do this from the top, so you’re able to reel in a long Rope without climbing down to break it.

Can you climb Rope like a Ladder?
›

Rope can be climbed the same way as a Ladder, and it doesn’t need a wall behind it. You’re able to walk through it as well, since it has no hitbox, which makes it easy to step on and off at the top.
