Crates are storage blocks from the Farmer’s Delight mod that pack 9 of one crop into a single block, like the
Cabbage Crate or the
Carrot Crate. There are six of them, three for the mod’s own crops and three for vanilla ones, and the
Rice Bale and
Bag of Rice do the same job for
Rice.
They’re mostly used to save space in your
Chests, as one stack of Crates holds 576 crops instead of 64. They also look good placed in a pantry or around a farm, and you can turn them back into the crops whenever you need them, without losing anything.
Crafting
Every Crate is made by filling a crafting grid with 9 of the same crop, so a
Tomato Crate needs 9
Tomatoes, and an
Onion Crate needs 9
Onions. Putting a Crate back in the crafting grid on its own will give you all 9 crops back.
The vanilla Crates work the same way, with 9
Carrots, 9
Potatoes or 9
Beetroots. These three can be turned off in the mod’s config, which some modpacks do if they already have crop storage from another mod.
If the vanilla Crates are turned off, the recipes for making them will disappear, but you’ll still be able to unpack any you already have. The
Cabbage Crate, Tomato Crate and Onion Crate can’t be turned off, so they’ll always be craftable.
How to Use It
Crates are a plain wooden block, so you can place them anywhere and build with them like Planks. They don’t have an inventory, which means you can’t open them or put anything else inside, and each one only ever holds the 9 crops it was made from.
| Crate | Holds | Can Be Turned Off |
|---|---|---|
| Cabbage Crate | 9 Cabbages | No |
| Tomato Crate | 9 Tomatoes | No |
| Onion Crate | 9 Onions | No |
| Carrot Crate | 9 Carrots | Yes |
| Potato Crate | 9 Potatoes | Yes |
| Beetroot Crate | 9 Beetroots | Yes |
You’ll want to break them with an Axe, and they always drop the Crate itself, so nothing gets scattered on the ground. Crates can’t be burned in a
Furnace or put in a
Composter either, so you’ll need to unpack them first if you want to use the crops.
It’s worth packing crops into Crates as soon as you harvest them, especially when you’re filling a
Shulker Box. One box full of Crates will carry nine times as many crops as a box full of loose ones.
You might also find a few Onion Crates in the chests at Pillager Outposts, as the mod adds its own items to that loot. Each one is worth 9
Onions, so it’s a quick way to start growing them, and there’s more on what else turns up on the Villages and Loot page.

A few add-ons bring Crates of their own as well, like the
Chorus Fruit Crate from End’s Delight and the
Chorus Crate from Ender’s Delight, which pack 9
Chorus Fruit the same way. The End’s Delight vs Ender’s Delight page covers both, and the Add-ons page lists the rest.
Rice Bale and Bag of Rice
Rice has two storage blocks, as it comes in two forms. The
Rice Bale is made from 9
Rice Panicles, which is what you get straight from harvesting the crop, and the
Bag of Rice is made from 9
Rice once the panicles have been broken down.
Both of them go back into 9 panicles or 9 Rice in the crafting grid, the same as the Crates do. They aren’t wooden like the Crates though, so they behave a little differently when you place them, and each one is used for something slightly different.
Rice Bale
The Rice Bale works a lot like a
Hay Bale. You’ll take 80% less fall damage when you land on it, it can be placed facing any way, and it’s broken fastest with a Hoe. It also catches fire easily, so you’ll want to keep it away from Lava and any open flames.
If you put a
Campfire on top of a Rice Bale, the smoke will rise much higher, just like it would with a Hay Bale. You can also use a Rice Bale in place of a Hay Bale when you craft
Horse Feed, and it has an 85% chance of adding a layer when you put it in a
Composter.
Bag of Rice
The Bag of Rice is a soft block a bit like Wool, and you’ll break it fastest with a Knife. It’s the better one to keep if you’re cooking, as most recipes ask for Rice rather than Rice Panicles, while the Rice Bale is the one you’ll want for Horse Feed. There’s more on growing it on the Rice page.
FAQ
Fill a crafting grid with 9
Carrots and you’ll get one Carrot Crate, which can be put back in the grid to get the 9 Carrots back. If the recipe doesn’t show up, your modpack has probably turned the vanilla Crates off in the config.
Crates can’t go in a
Composter, so you’ll need to unpack them into crops first. The Rice Bale is the only one that works, with an 85% chance of adding a layer, which is a lot better than putting the 9 panicles in one at a time.
You’ll need 9
Rice, which fill the whole crafting grid, and the Bag of Rice can be crafted back into 9 Rice whenever you need it. Rice comes from breaking down
Rice Panicles in the crafting grid, so it’s worth doing that before you pack it if you plan on cooking with it.
It’s mainly a way to store Rice Panicles, but it also works like a
Hay Bale, as it cuts fall damage by 80% and makes
Campfire smoke go higher. It can be used instead of a Hay Bale in the
Horse Feed recipe as well.
