Knives are tools from the Farmer’s Delight mod, and there are five of them, from the
Flint Knife up to the
Netherite Knife. You’ll need one to cut food on the
Cutting Board, to get
Straw when you break grass and crops, and to get extra drops from animals, like
Ham from Pigs, so you’ll want to have one with you most of the time.
You can use them as a weapon too, as they swing faster than a sword but hit for less, and they’re the only thing you’re able to put the Backstabbing enchantment on. So it’s worth making one early on, as a lot of the food in the mod will need a knife at some point.
Crafting

Each knife is crafted from one piece of its material on top of a
Stick, so it’s one of the cheapest tools you’re able to make. The Flint Knife only needs
Flint, which you’ll find by breaking
Gravel, so it’s usually the first one you’ll make.
You can’t craft the Netherite Knife, as you’ll need to upgrade a
Diamond Knife at a
Smithing Table with a
Netherite Ingot and a
Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template, just like any other
Diamond tool. It will keep all of its enchantments and its durability when you upgrade it, so you can enchant the Diamond Knife first.
You’ll get an advancement for making it, and the Netherite Knife won’t burn up if you drop it in Lava or Fire either. If you have an old Iron or Golden Knife you don’t need, you can smelt it down into an
Iron Nugget or a
Gold Nugget, though you’ll only get one back.
Finding Knives in Chests
You might not need to craft your first one, as you can find knives in a few kinds of chests as well. You’ll find them in the Butcher’s house in a Village early on, and the ones in Bastions, Ruined Portals and End Cities will usually have some enchantments on them already.
| Chest | Knife | Chance |
|---|---|---|
| Village Butcher | Flint Knife or Iron Knife | 33% each |
| Ruined Portal | Golden Knife, enchanted | 25% |
| Bastion Hoglin Stable | Golden Knife or Diamond Knife, enchanted | 40% or 20% |
| Bastion Treasure | Diamond Knife, sometimes enchanted | 25% |
| End City | Iron Knife or Diamond Knife, enchanted | 12.5% each |
You can find the rest of what the mod adds to chests on the Villages and Loot page. Piglins like the Golden Knife as well, so they’ll pick one up if you drop it near them, the same way they would with any other gold item.
Stats
All five of the knives will swing at the same speed, which is 2 attacks a second against a sword’s 1.6, but they’ll hit for less than a sword that’s made from the same thing. For example, a Diamond Knife hits for 4.5, whereas a
Diamond Sword will hit for 7.
| Knife | Attack Damage | Attack Speed | Durability | Mining Speed | Enchantability |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Flint Knife | 2.5 | 2 | 131 | 4 | 5 |
| Iron Knife | 3.5 | 2 | 250 | 6 | 14 |
| Golden Knife | 1.5 | 2 | 32 | 12 | 22 |
| Diamond Knife | 4.5 | 2 | 1561 | 8 | 10 |
| Netherite Knife | 5.5 | 2 | 2031 | 9 | 15 |
Knives will also knock mobs back a little less than other weapons, which keeps the mob close for your next hit. The Golden Knife has the lowest damage and durability, but it’s a lot easier to enchant, so it will usually get better enchantments from an
Enchanting Table.
You’re able to repair each knife with its own material at an
Anvil, so you’ll need
Flint for a Flint Knife and a
Diamond for a Diamond Knife. Two worn knives of the same kind can be put together in a crafting grid as well, which gives you one knife with their durability added up, though you’ll lose any enchantments that were on them.
Some add-ons will add more Knives as well, like the
End Stone Knife,
Purpur Knife,
Dragon Egg Shell Knife and
Dragon Tooth Knife in End’s Delight, and the
Bone Knife from Delightful. There’s also Farmer’s Knives, which adds Knives made from other mods’ materials, and the Add-ons page has the rest of them.
Uses
Cutting Board
If you put food on a
Cutting Board and right-click it with a knife, it will cut it up, so a
Raw Porkchop will give you 2
Raw Bacon, and a
Cabbage will be cut into two pieces of
Cabbage Leaf. Each cut will cost the knife 1 durability, and you can find every recipe on the Cutting Board page.
Straw
If you break
Wheat or Rice that’s fully grown with a knife in your hand, you’ll always get a piece of
Straw as well as the crop.
Short Grass and
Tall Grass have a 20% chance of dropping Straw, and the
Sandy Shrub has a 30% chance, but only when you break them with a knife.

You’ll need Straw to make
Canvas and
Rope, along with a few other blocks, so it’s worth picking it up whenever you can. The Straw page has everything you’re able to make with it, and you’ll get the Grasping at Straws advancement for your first piece.
Extra Drops From Mobs
If you kill some animals with a knife in your main hand, they’ll drop something extra on top of their normal drops. This is the main way you’ll get
Ham, which comes from Pigs and Hoglins, and you’ll get
Leather,
Feathers and
String from a few other mobs as well.
| Mob | Extra Drop | Chance |
|---|---|---|
| Pig | Ham, or Smoked Ham if it was on fire | 50%, +10% per Looting level |
| Hoglin | Ham, or Smoked Ham if it was on fire | 100% |
| Cow, Mooshroom, Horse, Donkey, Mule, Llama, Trader Llama | 1 Leather | 100% |
| Chicken | 1 Feather | 100% |
| Spider and Cave Spider | 1 String | 100% |
| Rabbit | 1 Rabbit Hide | 100% |
| Shulker | 1 Shulker Shell | 100% |
If you’ve got Fire Aspect on your knife, it will set the Pig alight on the first hit, so the hit that kills it will usually give you
Smoked Ham, which saves you a trip to the
Smoker. You can find out what Ham is used for on the Ham page, and you’ll get the Wild Butcher advancement for your first one.
Blocks and Right-Click Uses
You can also use a knife to break soft blocks quickly, like Wool,
Cobwebs,
Melons and
Pumpkins, and the mod’s
Straw Bales and pies as well. If you break a Pumpkin with it, you’ll get 4
Pumpkin Slices instead of the Pumpkin, unless the knife has Silk Touch on it.
If you right-click a Pumpkin with a knife, it will carve it just like
Shears would, and you’ll get 4
Pumpkin Seeds as well. You can also right-click a
Cake or a pie that’s been placed down to cut a slice off it, and a knife will take all of the mushrooms off a Mushroom Colony at once, whereas Shears only take one at a time.
Enchantments
You’re able to put most sword enchantments and most tool enchantments on a knife, so you can make one for fighting or one for farming. Sweeping Edge is the only sword enchantment you can’t put on a knife, and Backstabbing is the one that you can only put on a knife.
Backstabbing multiplies your damage by 1.4 at level I, 1.6 at level II and 1.8 at level III when you hit a mob from behind. It’s applied after Sharpness has been added, so the two of them stack together on a fighting knife.
Fortune will help you on the
Cutting Board, as each level adds 10% to the chance of getting things like the dye from Wild Crops, and it works on
Melons you break with the knife too, the same as it would with any other Fortune tool. If you’re playing on 1.20.1, the
Enchanting Table won’t put Fortune on a knife, but the rest of the list works the same.
FAQ
A knife will only lose 1 durability for each hit, the same as a Sword, whereas Axes, Pickaxes and other tools lose 2 when you hit a mob with them. It’s the same 1 durability for each cut on the Cutting Board too, so even a Flint Knife’s 131 uses will go a fair way before you need to make a new one.
You’ll get the same
Straw, the same chance of
Ham and the same results on the Cutting Board from every knife, so a Flint Knife is able to do everything a Netherite one can. It just won’t last as long, which is why it’s worth moving up to an Iron or Diamond Knife once you’ve got the materials, and putting Unbreaking and Mending on it.
It depends on what you’ll be using it for. A knife for fighting will want Sharpness and Backstabbing, whereas one for hunting will want Looting and Fire Aspect, so you’ll get more Ham and get it already smoked. If it’s mostly for the Cutting Board, Fortune is the one to go for, and Unbreaking and Mending are worth putting on all of them.
If you put a knife in a
Dispenser facing a
Cutting Board, it will use the knife on whatever is on the board each time it gets a redstone signal. It’ll use up the knife’s durability the same as it would in your hand, and the food it cuts will pop out of the side of the board, so you’re able to catch it with a
Hopper.
