The Soul Elytra is an upgraded
Elytra from the Deeper and Darker mod that’s able to boost you forward in the air without a
Firework Rocket. You’ll craft it from a normal Elytra with
Sculk Bones,
Soul Dust and a
Soul Crystal, which all come from the mobs of the Otherside.
Pressing the boost key while you’re gliding works like using a Firework Rocket, and it recharges on its own after 30 seconds. It also gives you 3 armor points while you’re wearing it and has more than twice the durability of a normal Elytra, so you’ll be repairing it a lot less often.
Where to Get It
You can’t find a Soul Elytra anywhere, so it has to be crafted, and the hardest part is the Elytra itself, which only comes from End Cities. The other materials all come from the Otherside, so you’ll need to have been through the Otherside Portal at least once.

Sculk Bones drop from the Shattered, Soul Dust from Sculk Leeches and Sculk Snappers, and the Soul Crystal from the Stalker, which climbs out of fake Ancient Vases. The chests in an Ancient Temple have all three as well, which is often quicker than hunting each mob down.
Crafting
The Soul Elytra is crafted with the Elytra in the middle of a
Crafting Table, a Soul Crystal above it, Soul Dust on either side and 4 Sculk Bones in the corners. The Elytra doesn’t need to be at full durability, which means you’re able to use one that’s almost broken.
Any enchantments on the old Elytra are lost in the crafting grid, so it’s worth crafting the Soul Elytra before you put anything on it. It’s able to take Unbreaking and Mending like a normal Elytra, along with Curse of Binding and Curse of Vanishing.
Stats
The Soul Elytra has 956 durability against the normal Elytra’s 432, so it lasts more than twice as long between repairs. It also gives you 3 armor points, which a normal Elytra doesn’t, though that’s still a lot less than a Chestplate.
| Stat | Soul Elytra | Elytra |
|---|---|---|
| Durability | 956 | 432 |
| Armor | 3 | 0 |
| Repair Item | Soul Crystal | Phantom Membrane |
| Boost | Every 30 seconds | Rockets only |
You’ll repair it with Soul Crystals at an
Anvil rather than Phantom Membranes, and each one restores a quarter of its durability. Mending is the easier way to keep it going, since Soul Crystals are rare enough that you’ll want to save them for the Sonorous Staff.
Special Effects
The Boost
While you’re gliding, pressing the boost key launches a Firework Rocket from you, which pushes you forward the same way holding one and right-clicking does. It doesn’t explode or hurt you, and it doesn’t use up any rockets, so you’re able to fly long distances with nothing in your inventory.

The boost key is B by default, and it can be changed in the Controls menu under Deeper and Darker. When you put the Soul Elytra on, a message above your hotbar will remind you which key it is, and while it’s recharging you’ll see the seconds left in the same place.
Cooldown
After each boost there’s a 30 second cooldown before you’re able to use it again, and normal Firework Rockets still work during that time. Server owners can change the cooldown in the mod’s config with soulElytraCooldown, or set it to -1 to turn the boost off completely.
It’s worth carrying a few rockets anyway for taking off from flat ground, as one boost every 30 seconds won’t keep you climbing on its own. Once you’re up high, the boost will cover most of the gliding you’ll need between rockets.
FAQ
Press the boost key while you’re gliding, which is B unless you’ve changed it in the Controls menu, and it’ll push you forward like a Firework Rocket. It doesn’t use up any items, and it recharges after 30 seconds, with the time left showing above your hotbar.
Craft an Elytra with a Soul Crystal above it, Soul Dust on both sides and 4 Sculk Bones in the corners. The Sculk Bones come from the Shattered, the Soul Dust from Sculk Leeches and Sculk Snappers, and the Soul Crystal from the Stalker, so you’ll need to explore the Otherside first.
You’re able to repair it with Soul Crystals at an Anvil, and each one restores a quarter of its durability. Mending works on it as well, which is a lot cheaper than using Soul Crystals, as they’re also needed for the Sonorous Staff.
Not for gliding, as the boost will push you forward every 30 seconds without using any items. Rockets are still handy for taking off from the ground or climbing quickly, and they work alongside the boost while it’s recharging.
