The Deeplands is a biome from the Deeper and Darker mod, and it’s the darkest and busiest part of the Otherside, the dimension you’ll reach through the portal in an Ancient City. It’s a wide cavern of
Sculk Stone and
Sculk, lit only by clumps of
Sculk Gleam hanging from the ceiling, with tall stone columns running between the floor and the roof.
It’s also the only biome where the Ancient Temple generates, so you’ll be coming here sooner or later for its chests. On top of that, four kinds of hostile mobs spawn here, the ground is full of traps like the
Sculk Jaw and
Infested Sculk, and Sculk Shriekers can still summon a Warden.
Finding It
The Otherside is made up of four biomes, and the Deeplands is the cold and dry one, which you’ll be able to tell apart from the Overcast Columns, Echoing Forest and Blooming Caverns by its black floor. There’s no surface to walk on, as the whole dimension is one big cavern 128 blocks tall with Bedrock above and below you, so you’ll be traveling at whatever height the floor is.
If cheats are on, the command above will take you to the nearest one. Otherwise, the big stone pillars and the dark floor are a giveaway, since the other three biomes are covered in Echo Soil, Blooming Sculk Stone or Gloomslate instead, and none of them are quite as dark.
Terrain
The ground is mostly
Sculk Stone, with a layer of
Sculk over the top, and you’ll see Sculk Veins,
Sculk Sensors and the odd
Sculk Catalyst dotted across it. Sculk Tendrils grow up from the floor and Sculk Vines hang down from the roof, and there’s a few vanilla Fossils buried in the stone as well.

Thick columns of Sculk Stone link the floor to the ceiling in places, and some of them are broken in the middle, which leaves a gap you’re able to walk through. The only natural light comes from the
Sculk Gleam clusters hanging from the roof, so it’s worth bringing plenty of light of your own.
Below about Y 17, the open spaces are filled with
Sculk Grime rather than water or Lava, which is a soft block a bit like Mud that you’ll sink into slightly. Patches of it get turned into Sculk as well, so the lower part of the biome is a lot more solid than it first looks.
Mobs
Four hostile mobs spawn in the Deeplands, which is more than in any other Otherside biome. Most of them turn up in groups across the open floor, so you’ll rarely be dealing with just one at a time, and the Sculk Snappers in particular come in packs of up to six.
| Mob | Group Size | How Common |
|---|---|---|
| Sculk Snapper | 3 to 6 | Most common |
| Sculk Centipede | 1 to 4 | Common |
| Shattered | 2 to 4 | Common |
| Phantom | 1 to 2 | Rare |
Phantoms are the odd one out, as they spawn here naturally whether you’ve slept or not, so you might find them swooping at you from the dark. The Deeplands is also the only biome where Sculk Shriekers generate, and they’re able to summon a Warden just like in the Overworld, so it’s worth sneaking past them or breaking them with a hoe.
Some
Sculk blocks here are actually
Infested Sculk, which will throw a Shriek Worm at you when you step on it. There’s more on that in the Infested Sculk section below, as it’s one of the most common ways to get caught out here.
Resources
Every ore from the Overworld generates in the Sculk Stone here, from Coal and Iron through to Diamond and Emerald, and they drop the same items as the normal versions. Emerald Ore turns up in every Otherside biome rather than just mountains, which makes the Deeplands a decent place to find a few while you’re exploring.
The
Sculk Gleam on the ceiling is worth taking too, as it gives off as much light as Glowstone and drops itself when broken, without needing Silk Touch. A few of the blocks in each clump are
Porous Sculk Gleam, which can be sheared for
Gleam Gel, and there’s more on both on the light blocks page.

The Ancient Temple is the main reason to come here though, as its chests and vases hold things like the Resonarium Upgrade Smithing Template and Warden Carapace. Temples are spread out, with at most one in every 28 by 28 chunk area, so you might have to cover a fair bit of ground to find one.
Hazards
Infested Sculk
Infested Sculk looks just like a normal
Sculk block, and it generates in small clusters in the Deeplands, the Echoing Forest and the Blooming Caverns. When a player walks onto it, the block turns back into Sculk, knocks you away, and a Shriek Worm bursts out of the ground where it was.
Breaking it is a trap as well, as mining it with anything other than Silk Touch will release a Sculk Leech. With Silk Touch you’ll just get a normal block of Sculk back, since there’s no way to collect the Infested version itself, and it breaks in half the time normal Sculk does, which is one way to spot it.
Sculk Jaws
The
Sculk Jaw is the other trap you’ll find here, a block that bites anything stepping on it and steals some of your experience. It has a page of its own on the Sculk Jaw, including how to get that experience back by breaking it.
Crouching will keep a Sculk Jaw from biting you, but it won’t do anything to stop Infested Sculk. That’s why it’s worth breaking any Sculk you’re not sure about with a Silk Touch hoe before you walk across a big patch of it, as you’ll just get plain Sculk back and nothing will spawn.
Most Jaws sit buried in the Sculk Stone, so you’ll run into them while tunneling as often as out on the open floor. Mining one with a Silk Touch hoe lets you take it home, and breaking it any other way still gives back every point of experience it stole from you.
FAQ
The Deeplands is one of the four biomes inside the Otherside, which is the dimension you’ll get to through the portal in an Ancient City. It’s the cold, dry part of it, covered in Sculk Stone and black Sculk, and if cheats are turned on, you’re able to find the nearest one with /locate biome deeperdarker:deeplands.
Infested Sculk is a trap block that looks like normal Sculk, and it generates in the Deeplands, Echoing Forest and Blooming Caverns. Stepping on it knocks you back and spawns a Shriek Worm, and breaking it without Silk Touch releases a Sculk Leech instead, so it’s worth mining Sculk with a Silk Touch hoe.
It does, as the Ancient Temple is only able to generate in the Deeplands and nowhere else in the Otherside. They’re fairly spread out too, so it’s worth sticking to the Sculk Stone pillars and black floor of the Deeplands while you look, rather than searching the other three biomes.
A Warden is able to spawn in the Deeplands, as it’s the only biome where Sculk Shriekers generate, and they’ll summon one just like they do in an Ancient City. Sneak past them where you can, or break them first with a hoe, since a Warden in the dark out here is very hard to escape.
