The Echoing Forest is a biome from the Deeper and Darker mod that grows inside the Otherside, the cave dimension you’ll reach from an Ancient City. It’s the only place in the dimension with trees, as Echo Trees grow out of a dark purple
Echo Soil floor, and the
Sculk Gleam hanging under their leaves lights the whole forest up.
It’s a lot easier to find your way around than the Deeplands, but it isn’t safe, as packs of Shattered roam between the trees. This is where you’ll gather
Echo Logs for the Echo wood set and Echo Saplings to grow your own, and it’s one of the better places for Sculk Gleam too.
Finding It
The Echoing Forest is the warm and wet biome of the Otherside’s four, and you’ll know you’ve found one when the floor turns purple and the ash starts drifting through the air. Like the rest of the dimension, it’s a single cavern between a Bedrock floor and roof, so the trees grow wherever there’s open ground at the bottom.
With cheats on, the command above will take you to the closest one. Without them, the glow of the trees is easy enough to spot from a distance, as the other biomes don’t have anything that lights up quite so evenly across the ceiling.
Terrain
The ground is covered in
Echo Soil, which is a soft, dark purple block you’re able to dig with a shovel, and Sculk Stone makes up the walls and the rock underneath. Patches of Sculk grow here as well, along with Sculk Tendrils on the floor, Sculk Vines on the roof, and a few vanilla Fossils buried in the stone.
Down near the bottom, a lot of the
Sculk Grime that fills the low ground elsewhere is turned into Echo Soil instead. That means the forest floor carries on further down than you might expect, and you’ll find Echo Trees growing at more than one level of the cavern.
Echo Trees
Echo Trees grow in a similar shape to Cherry trees, with a trunk of about 7 to 10 blocks that splits into two or three branches near the top. Their
Echo Leaves hang down in long strands, and some of them have a block of
Sculk Gleam stuck underneath, which is where a lot of the light in the forest comes from.
Chopping them gives you
Echo Logs, which work just like any other log, as they’ll craft into
Echo Planks and can be smelted into Charcoal. The full set of Echo wood blocks, from stairs to boats, is covered on the Echo and Bloom wood page.
Echo Saplings
Breaking the leaves will sometimes drop an
Echo Sapling, with a 5% chance that goes up with Fortune, or you can collect the leaves themselves with Shears. The sapling will only grow on
Echo Soil or Sculk Grime though, so you’ll need to take some soil with you if you’d like to grow Echo Trees back home.
Mobs
Only two mobs spawn in the Echoing Forest, but the Shattered make up most of what you’ll meet, coming in groups of two to five. They don’t look for you, as they listen for vibrations within 16 blocks the way a Warden does, which makes it worth sneaking through the forest rather than sprinting from tree to tree.
| Mob | Group Size | How Common |
|---|---|---|
| Shattered | 2 to 5 | Most common |
| Sculk Snapper | 1 to 2 | Less common |
No Sculk Shriekers generate here, so a Warden won’t be summoned unless you bring a Shrieker with you. Watch the floor though, as
Infested Sculk and the
Sculk Jaw turn up in this biome as well, the same as in the Deeplands.
Resources
All of the Overworld ores generate in the Sculk Stone here, from Coal up to Diamond and Emerald, so the walls between the trees are worth mining as you go. The
Sculk Gleam is more common here than anywhere else in the Otherside, both under the leaves and in large clumps hanging from the roof.
A few blocks in those clumps are
Porous Sculk Gleam, which slowly fills up with gel and can be sheared for
Gleam Gel. Both blocks drop themselves without Silk Touch, and you’ll find more on what they’re used for on the light blocks page.
FAQ
Echo Saplings drop from Echo Leaves in the Echoing Forest, with a 5% chance for each block you break, or more with a Fortune tool. You’ll need to plant them on Echo Soil or Sculk Grime, so take a few blocks of Echo Soil with you if you want to grow them outside the Otherside.
The Echoing Forest is one of the four biomes in the Otherside, the dimension you’ll reach through the portal in an Ancient City. It has a purple Echo Soil floor and glowing Echo Trees, and with cheats on, /locate biome deeperdarker:echoing_forest will find the nearest one.
You’re able to grow them anywhere, as long as the sapling is planted on Echo Soil or Sculk Grime rather than Dirt or Grass. Echo Soil drops itself when you dig it with a shovel, so a few blocks of it from the Echoing Forest are all you need to start a farm at home.
