Sculk Stone and
Gloomslate are the two kinds of stone that make up the Otherside, the dimension from the Deeper and Darker mod. Sculk Stone is the dark teal rock found almost everywhere down there, while Gloomslate is the near-black brown stone of the Overcast Columns, and they work a lot like Stone and Deepslate do in the Overworld.
Both of them come with a full set of building blocks, from bricks and tiles to slabs and walls, and every Overworld ore has a version set into each one. This page also covers
Sculk Grime, the soft block that fills the low parts of the dimension, and
Soundproof Glass, which is crafted from Soul Dust.
Obtaining
Mining
Sculk Stone with a pickaxe drops
Cobbled Sculk Stone, the same way Stone drops Cobblestone, and a Silk Touch pickaxe will give you the smooth block instead. Gloomslate works the same way, dropping
Cobbled Gloomslate, and it’s a little quicker to mine than Deepslate even though it looks just as tough.
You’re able to smelt either cobbled block back into its stone in a
Furnace, and smelting the stone again gives you the Smooth version. The Cobbled blocks won’t stand in for Cobblestone though, so you’ll still need normal Cobblestone for things like stone tools and Furnaces.
Building Blocks
Each stone has the same family of blocks, and you’ll get most of them by crafting four of one block in a square to make four of the next. Cobbled turns into Polished, Polished turns into Bricks, and Bricks turn into Tiles, while Smooth turns into Cut and two Brick Slabs stacked up make the Chiseled block.
| Block | Made From | Slab, Stairs and Wall |
|---|---|---|
| The stone itself | Silk Touch, or smelting Cobbled | Yes |
| Cobbled | Mining the stone | Yes |
| Polished | 4 Cobbled | Yes |
| Bricks | 4 Polished | Yes |
| Tiles | 4 Bricks | Yes |
| Smooth | Smelting the stone | Yes |
| Cut | 4 Smooth | Yes |
| Chiseled | 2 Brick Slabs | No |
A
Stonecutter will turn the cobbled block straight into Polished, Bricks, Tiles and Chiseled blocks along with their slabs, stairs and walls, which saves a lot of crafting if you’re building with them. The Sculk Stone set has a cold teal tint and the Gloomslate set a warm brown one, so they go well together, like Gloomslate trim on a Sculk Stone wall.
The Gloomslate set is crafted the same way, starting from
Cobbled Gloomslate, and it has one extra block, the
Gloomslate Brick Fence, which makes six from four Gloomslate Bricks and two Sticks. The fence was added in 1.4, so it isn’t in the 1.20.1 version of the mod, which stops at 1.3.3.
There’s also
Enriched Gloomslate Bricks, another 1.4 block, but it has no recipe and doesn’t generate anywhere in Survival yet, so it’s only in the Creative menu for now. Breaking one gives you Cobbled Gloomslate and sometimes a piece of
Lite, which hints at what the block is meant for later on.
Ores
Every Overworld ore has a Sculk Stone and a Gloomslate version, and they drop the same items as the normal ones, with Fortune and Silk Touch working as usual. The Sculk Stone ores generate in the Deeplands, Echoing Forest and Blooming Caverns, and the Gloomslate ores in the Overcast Columns, at the same heights.
| Ore | Most Common | Pickaxe Needed |
|---|---|---|
| Coal | Upper half, above Y 64 | Any |
| Iron | Above Y 24, most around Y 76 | Stone |
| Copper | Above Y 24, more the higher you go | Stone |
| Lapis Lazuli | Y 10 to 25 | Stone |
| Redstone | Anywhere below Y 64 | Iron |
| Gold | Below Y 70, most near the bottom | Iron |
| Emerald | Below Y 30, most around Y 7 | Iron |
| Diamond | Below Y 50, most around Y 9 | Iron |
The Otherside only runs from Y 0 to Y 128, so the bottom of the dimension is where you’ll want to dig for Diamonds and Emeralds. Emerald Ore generating in every biome is the big difference from the Overworld, where it only turns up under mountains, so a strip mine near the floor here will find both.
Smelting or blasting any of these ores gives you the same result as the Overworld version, like an
Iron Ingot from Iron Ore or a
Diamond from Diamond Ore. That’s mostly useful with Silk Touch, as the ores drop their raw items when you mine them normally anyway.
Sculk Grime
Sculk Grime fills the low open spaces of the Otherside, below about Y 17, where you’d expect water or Lava in the Overworld. It’s a soft, dark block that you’ll sink into slightly like Mud, and it’s quickest to dig with a shovel, which drops two to four
Grime Balls, unless you’re using Silk Touch.
Grime Bricks
Four Grime Balls craft back into a block, and smelting a Grime Ball gives you a
Grime Brick. Four Grime Bricks then make
Sculk Grime Bricks, which have their own slab, stairs and wall, and they’re a good way to break up a large wall of Sculk Stone.
The chests in the Ancient Temple hold Grime Balls and Grime Bricks fairly often, especially the one at the top, so you might not need to dig much of it yourself. In some biomes the Grime is partly replaced by other blocks, like Echo Soil in the Echoing Forest and Magma Blocks in the Overcast Columns.
Soundproof Glass
Soundproof Glass is made from a
Glass block with four
Soul Dust around it, which makes two. It looks like normal Glass, but it blocks vibrations the same way Wool does, so anything that hears through Sculk, like a
Sculk Sensor or a Warden, won’t pick up sounds made on the other side of it.
That makes it handy for building near Sculk without setting it off, as you’re able to see through it while it stops the vibrations of your footsteps. It also works against the Shattered, which hunt by sound, so a window of it in a base wall won’t give your position away.
FAQ
Sculk Stone is the main stone of the Otherside, and mining it with a pickaxe gives you Cobbled Sculk Stone, much like Stone and Cobblestone. Use Silk Touch to collect the Sculk Stone itself, or smelt the cobbled version in a Furnace to turn it back.
Gloomslate only generates in the Overcast Columns, the brown, smoky biome of the Otherside, where it makes up the ground and the big pillars. It drops Cobbled Gloomslate when you mine it, which you can smelt back into Gloomslate or craft into its building blocks.
Soundproof Glass blocks vibrations the way Wool does, so Sculk Sensors, Wardens and Shattered won’t hear sounds made through it. It’s crafted from one Glass and four Soul Dust, and it’s useful as a window anywhere near Sculk, as you can still see through it.
Grime Balls come from digging Sculk Grime, and you’ll mostly use them for building, as smelting one makes a Grime Brick. Four Grime Bricks craft into Sculk Grime Bricks, which have a slab, stairs and wall, and four Grime Balls will turn back into a Sculk Grime block.
