Echo and Bloom are the two wood types from the Deeper and Darker mod, and both of them grow in the Otherside. Echo wood comes from the trees of the Echoing Forest, while Bloom wood comes from the
Blooming Stems that climb out of the floor of the Blooming Caverns.
Each one gives you a full wood set, with planks, stairs, slabs, fences, doors, signs and boats, just like Oak or Cherry.
Echo Planks have a muted olive-gray color and
Bloom Planks a cool slate blue, which makes them a nice change from the near-black stone you’ll be building with down there.
Obtaining
Chopping an Echo Tree gives you
Echo Logs, and the trees only grow in the Echoing Forest, where they’re easy to spot thanks to the glowing Sculk Gleam under their leaves. Breaking the
Echo Leaves will sometimes drop an
Echo Sapling, or the odd Stick, and Shears will collect the leaves themselves.
Bloom wood works differently, as there are no logs or leaves at all, just the
Blooming Stems. These grow like tall, twisting stalks in the Blooming Caverns, and breaking the bottom of one will bring the rest of it down too, the same way a Chorus Plant falls apart, so you’ll collect a whole stalk at once.
Both of them break quickest with an axe, and using an axe on an Echo Log or a Blooming Stem strips it, which gives you
Stripped Echo Logs or
Stripped Blooming Stems. You’ll need the stripped versions for Hanging Signs, the same as with any vanilla wood.
Growing Your Own
An
Echo Sapling can only be planted on
Echo Soil or
Sculk Grime, so it won’t take root on Dirt or Grass. Echo Soil drops itself when you dig it with a shovel, which means a few blocks from the Echoing Forest are all you need to start a tree farm anywhere, Overworld included.
A
Blooming Stem placed on
Blooming Sculk Stone will keep growing on its own, adding a new section above it and sometimes branching off to the side. You can speed that up with
Bone Meal, and since it needs Blooming Sculk Stone under it, it’s worth collecting some with Silk Touch if you want to grow them at home.
Stems that generated in the cavern have already finished growing, so it’s only the ones you place yourself that will get any taller. Like a Chorus Plant, each section needs to stay connected back to its base, so breaking a lower section will cut off everything above it.
Uses
One log, wood block or stem crafts into four planks, and from there every recipe matches the vanilla wood sets. Four Echo Logs in a square make three Echo Wood blocks with bark on every side, but there’s no bark version of the Blooming Stem, as it already has its own rounded shape.
| Block | Echo | Bloom |
|---|---|---|
| Log or stem | Echo Log, Stripped Echo Log | Blooming Stem, Stripped Blooming Stem |
| Wood | Echo Wood, Stripped Echo Wood | None |
| Building | Planks, Stairs, Slab | Planks, Stairs, Slab |
| Fencing | Fence, Fence Gate | Fence, Fence Gate |
| Redstone | Door, Trapdoor, Pressure Plate, Button | Door, Trapdoor, Pressure Plate, Button |
| Signs | Sign, Hanging Sign | Sign, Hanging Sign |
| Boats | Boat, Boat with Chest | Boat, Boat with Chest |
Both kinds of planks will burn in a Furnace and work in any recipe that takes planks, like Crafting Tables, Chests and Sticks. Echo Logs can be smelted into
Charcoal too, but Blooming Stems can’t, so it’s worth keeping a few Echo Logs aside if you need Charcoal in the Otherside.
The boats are mostly for looks, as the only water down there is in the small pools of the Blooming Caverns, and boats will break any
Ice Lily they bump into. They’ll work just like any other boat back in the Overworld though, so they’re a good way to show off where you’ve been.
FAQ
Echo Logs come from the Echo Trees in the Echoing Forest, a biome of the Otherside, and you can chop them with any axe. Each log crafts into four Echo Planks, and you can grow more trees from the Echo Saplings that drop from their leaves.
Bloom Planks are crafted from Blooming Stems, four planks for each stem, and the stems grow on the floor of the Blooming Caverns. Breaking the bottom of a stem will drop the whole stalk, so you’ll get plenty from each one.
Echo Saplings only grow on Echo Soil or Sculk Grime, so planting one on Dirt or Grass won’t work. Dig up some Echo Soil from the Echoing Forest with a shovel, as it drops itself, and the sapling will grow on it anywhere, including the Overworld.
