The
Sculk Bone is a crafting material from the Deeper and Darker mod that drops from the Shattered, a hostile sculk mob that wanders the forests of the Otherside. It’s also one of the most common things you’ll find in the Chests of an Ancient Temple.
You’ll want six of them in total, four for the
Soul Elytra and two for the
Sonorous Staff, and those are the only two things they’re used for. Since a single Shattered can drop up to three on its own, they’re usually the first part of either recipe you’ll finish.
Obtaining
Every Shattered drops 1 to 3 Sculk Bones when it dies, and Looting adds up to one more per level, so a Looting III weapon can get you as many as six from one kill. They spawn in groups in the Echoing Forest, where they’re the most common mob, and in smaller numbers in the Deeplands.

The Shattered is a tough fight for the early Otherside, as it has 50 health and hits for 6 damage on Normal, so it’s worth bringing decent armor before you go looking for them. Taking on one at a time is the safest way to do it, since they tend to turn up in groups of two or more.
| Source | Amount | Chance |
|---|---|---|
| Shattered | 1 to 3 (+1 per Looting level) | Always |
| Ancient Temple apex Chest | 2 to 6 | About 39% per Chest |
| Ancient Temple basement Chest | 2 to 7 | About 36% per Chest |
| Fossilized Crystallized Amber | 1 | About 11% |
The Chests at the top and bottom of an Ancient Temple both have a good chance of holding a few, which means a full trip through one will often get you enough for a Soul Elytra without any fighting. Fossilized
Crystallized Amber can have one trapped inside it too, though that’s more of a bonus than something worth hunting for.
Uses
The
Soul Elytra takes four Sculk Bones in the corners of the grid, with an
Elytra in the middle, a
Soul Crystal above it and two
Soul Dust on either side. It’s the biggest use for them, and the one most players will be gathering them for.
The
Sonorous Staff needs two Sculk Bones as its handle, along with two Soul Crystals and the
Heart of the Deep, which only comes from the Warden. Once you’ve crafted both of these, you won’t have any other use for your spare bones, so there’s no need to keep farming them.
Sculk Bones can’t be turned into Bone Meal or used in place of a
Bone in any recipe. They’re only good for the Soul Elytra and the Sonorous Staff, so any extras can safely go into a Chest.
FAQ
Kill the Shattered, which drop 1 to 3 Sculk Bones each and are most common in the Echoing Forest of the Otherside. The apex and basement Chests of Ancient Temples often hold a few as well.
They’re used for two recipes, the Soul Elytra, which takes four, and the Sonorous Staff, which takes two. You’ll need six altogether if you want both, and neither of these is repaired with them.
The Shattered spawn in the Echoing Forest, where they’re the most common mob, and less often in the Deeplands. Both of these biomes are in the Otherside, which you’ll reach through the portal in an Ancient City.
There’s no recipe that turns them into Bone Meal, and they won’t work in place of a normal Bone either. It’s best to keep six of them for the Soul Elytra and Sonorous Staff, and store the rest.
