The Sculk Snapper is a hostile mob from the Deeper and Darker mod that lives in the Deeplands and the Echoing Forest of the Otherside. It’s a small, snapping sculk creature that will run at you as soon as it sees you, though it only has 12 health, so a couple of hits from a decent sword is usually enough to deal with one.
What makes it worth reading about is that you can tame it, which is something no other mob in the mod lets you do. A tamed Sculk Snapper follows you around like a Wolf and fights for you, and every now and then it will drop an
Enchanted Book at your feet as well.
Spawning
Sculk Snappers are the most common mob in the Deeplands, where they spawn in packs of three to six. They also show up in pairs in the Echoing Forest, and every so often in the Blooming Caverns, though you’ll rarely see more than one or two there.
A few of the rooms in an Ancient Temple have a Sculk Snapper placed inside as well, so you’ll often run into one while you’re looting the temple. Since the biomes are all in the Otherside, you’ll need to get through the Otherside Portal in an Ancient City before you can find any.
Behavior
Unlike the Shattered, the Sculk Snapper isn’t blind, and it will go after any player it spots nearby. It bites for 3 damage on Normal, which isn’t much on its own, but a pack of them in the Deeplands can add up quickly if you let them surround you.
Hitting one will make the others nearby join in, so it’s best to take on a group from somewhere they can only reach you one at a time. It won’t attack other sculk mobs like the Shattered or the Stalker, as they’re all on the same side.
Taming
To tame a Sculk Snapper, you’ll need to feed it
Gleam Gel by using it on the Snapper. Each piece only has a 20% chance of taming it, so you might need to go through a handful before the hearts appear, and it can still bite you while you’re trying, so having some armor on is a good idea.
Gleam Gel was added in 1.4, so it isn’t in the 1.20.1 version of the mod, which stops at 1.3.3. On that version, the Snapper is tamed by feeding it an enchanted
Netherite Chestplate instead, which works first time but uses up the chestplate.
Once it’s tamed, it gets 16 health and will follow you around, much like a Wolf does. Using an empty hand on it will make it sit, and it’ll attack anything that hurts you or anything you attack, though it can’t be bred, so the only way to get more is to tame them.
Getting Gleam Gel
Gleam Gel comes from a
Porous Sculk Gleam, which slowly fills up with gel over time. Once it’s full, using
Shears on it will give you two pieces of Gleam Gel and empty it out again, so you’ll be able to come back and collect more later.
Enchanted Books
A tamed Sculk Snapper will drop an
Enchanted Book now and then, as long as you’re within 5 blocks of it. You’ll usually get one every few minutes if you stay nearby, and each Snapper can drop up to 8 books before it stops. That count isn’t saved, though, so it starts again from zero whenever the Snapper is unloaded, like when you leave the area or rejoin the world.
The books can have almost any enchantment at any level, apart from Curse of Binding and Curse of Vanishing, and about 1 in 5 of them will have a second enchantment on top. It’s worth taming several and keeping them close to where you spend most of your time, like your base or your farm.
Healing a Tamed Snapper
If your Snapper has been hurt, you can give it any enchanted item, like an old enchanted sword or a piece of armor, and it’ll heal back to full health. The item is used up, so it’s a good use for the gear you’d otherwise throw away, as Enchanted Books won’t work.
Drops
A wild Sculk Snapper only drops the one item when it’s killed, and it isn’t anything rare. Still, it’s one of the easier ways to get hold of it in the Otherside, as there are so many Snappers in the Deeplands.
Each one drops a single
Soul Dust, with Looting adding up to one more per level. Soul Dust is used to make
Soundproof Glass and the
Soul Elytra, and it can turn a Potion of Invisibility into a Potion of Sculk Affinity at a Brewing Stand.
It’s one of the mobs you’ll need to kill for the Sculk Slayer advancement, so it’s worth killing at least one wild Snapper even if you plan to tame the rest. Weapons with Sculk Smite deal extra damage to it too, though that’s rarely needed with only 12 health to get through.
FAQ
Use
Gleam Gel on it, and each piece has a 20% chance of taming it, so bring a few. Gleam Gel comes from shearing a full Porous Sculk Gleam, and on the 1.20.1 version of the mod you’ll need an enchanted Netherite Chestplate instead.
Sculk Snappers can’t be bred, so feeding two of them won’t give you a baby. The only way to get more tamed Snappers is to find wild ones in the Deeplands or the Echoing Forest and tame each one with Gleam Gel.
It follows you and fights alongside you like a Wolf, and it drops an Enchanted Book every few minutes while you’re within 5 blocks. Each Snapper will drop up to 8 books, and about 1 in 5 of them have two enchantments.
They spawn in packs in the Deeplands, in pairs in the Echoing Forest, and now and then in the Blooming Caverns, which are all biomes of the Otherside. A few are also placed in the rooms of Ancient Temples.
