The Otherside plants are the flowers, grasses and vines that grow in the Otherside, the cave dimension from the Deeper and Darker mod. Most of them glow, which is handy in a dimension with no sun, and each biome has its own set, from the
Glowing Grass of the Blooming Caverns to the
Gloomy Cactus of the Overcast Columns.
They’re mostly decorative, but a few have real uses, like
Bloom Berries for food and the
Lily Flower for Suspicious Stew. Several of them will only stay planted on the block they grow on in the wild, so it’s worth bringing that block home with you as well.
Obtaining
Most of these plants need Shears or Silk Touch to collect, the same as grass and vines in the Overworld. The table below shows where each one grows and what it has to sit on, which matters if you want to replant them, since some won’t survive anywhere else.
| Plant | Where It Grows | Grows On | Collect With |
|---|---|---|---|
| Glowing Grass | Blooming Caverns | Sculk Stone, Blooming Sculk Stone | Shears |
| Glowing Flowers | Blooming Caverns | Blooming Sculk Stone, Blooming Moss Block | Anything |
| Glowing Roots | Blooming Caverns | Floor, grows upward | Shears or Silk Touch |
| Glowing Vines | Blooming Caverns | Ceiling, grows downward | Plant a Bloom Berry |
| Ice Lily | Blooming Caverns pools | Water or Ice | Anything |
| Gloomy Grass | Overcast Columns | Gloomy Sculk | Shears |
| Gloomy Cactus | Overcast Columns | Gloomy Sculk | Anything |
| Sculk Tendrils | Deeplands, Echoing Forest | Floor, grows upward | Shears or Silk Touch |
| Sculk Vines | Most of the Otherside | Ceiling, grows downward | Shears or Silk Touch |
Glowing Roots, Sculk Tendrils and Sculk Vines still have a chance to drop without the right tool, about one in three, and Fortune raises that. You’ll get nothing from the head of a Glowing Vine, though, so the only way to start your own is to plant a
Bloom Berry under a block.
Glowing Plants
Glowing Grass and
Glowing Flowers cover the floor of the Blooming Caverns, and they give off a soft light that’s bright enough to keep a path lit. The grass even grows underwater on the bottom of the pools there, and you can place it in water yourself, as it’s waterloggable.
Glowing Roots sprout up from the cave floor in thick patches and Glowing Vines hang down from the roof. A section of vine with berries on it glows as brightly as a torch, while bare sections don’t give off any light, so a vine full of berries doubles as a light fixture.
Bloom Berries can be picked by using a vine that has them, and Bone Meal on a bare section will grow a new berry in place. Eating one restores a little hunger and usually makes you glow for a few seconds, and planting one under a block starts a brand new vine.
Ice Lilies
Ice Lilies float on the pools of the Blooming Caverns, and about half of them carry a
Lily Flower in the middle. Using Shears on one takes the flower and leaves the pad, and you can put a Lily Flower back onto a bare pad by using it on one.
Breaking a bare pad gives you a Flowerless Ice Lily, which places without a flower, so you’re able to choose which pads have one. They can sit on Water or Ice, and they glow faintly, but any boat that runs into one will break it, so keep them out of the way of a boat route.
The Flowerless Ice Lily was added in 1.4, so in the 1.20.1 version of the mod, which stops at 1.3.3, a bare pad breaks into a normal Ice Lily. The Lily Flower itself can also be planted on the ground like any other flower, including on Blooming Sculk Stone.
Gloomy Plants
The Overcast Columns has its own two plants,
Gloomy Grass and the
Gloomy Cactus, and both of them will only grow on
Gloomy Sculk. The cactus gives off a dim orange glow, and it’ll hurt anything that walks into it, just like a normal Cactus.
Using
Bone Meal on Gloomy Sculk spreads a small patch of it with Gloomy Grass and Cactus on top, which is the easiest way to grow more. You’ll need Silk Touch to take the Gloomy Sculk itself, so collect a few blocks of it if you want these plants in a base.
Sculk Tendrils and Vines
Sculk Tendrils grow up from the floor of the Deeplands and Echoing Forest, while
Sculk Vines hang from the ceiling in most of the Otherside. They work like the Twisting and Weeping Vines of the Nether, growing a block longer now and then, and Bone Meal grows them one or two blocks at a time.
Neither of them glows, so they’re purely for looks, but they’re a quick way to make a build feel like it belongs down there. You can walk through both of them without being slowed down, which makes them safe to hang around a doorway.
Uses
The
Lily Flower counts as a small flower, so it’ll make Suspicious Stew that gives you Glowing for a few seconds, and Bees will treat
Glowing Flowers like any other flower. Most of the plants also go in a Composter, with Ice Lilies and Lily Flowers having the best chance of adding a layer.
Bloom Berries are the only food on this list, and they’re a small snack rather than a meal, but they’re easy to farm with Bone Meal once you’ve got a vine going. Everything else is decoration, and a bit of glow from these plants goes a long way in an Otherside base.
FAQ
Use Shears on an Ice Lily that has a flower, which you’ll find floating on the pools in the Blooming Caverns of the Otherside. The pad stays behind, and you can put the Lily Flower back onto any bare pad by using it on one.
Plant a Bloom Berry on the underside of a block, and it’ll grow into a Glowing Vine that hangs downward. Use Bone Meal on a bare section to grow new Bloom Berries, which you can then pick by using the vine.
The Gloomy Cactus will only survive on Gloomy Sculk, the black ground block of the Overcast Columns, so you’ll need to collect some with Silk Touch first. Bone Meal on Gloomy Sculk also spawns new cacti and Gloomy Grass around it.
