The Deeper and Darker mod adds four enchantments, and each of them is tied to sculk in some way, from extra damage against sculk mobs to a louder blast from the
Sonorous Staff. Sculk Smite and Catalysis go on melee weapons, while Volume and Reverberation only work on the staff.
Three of them can come from an
Enchanting Table on a Book, but Catalysis is a treasure enchantment, so you’ll only find it in an Ancient Temple. Volume and Reverberation were added in 1.4, so they aren’t in the 1.20.1 version of the mod, which stops at 1.3.3.
The table below shows where each one goes and how you’ll get it. An
Anvil is needed for most of them in the end, either to put a Book on an Axe or Mace, or because the Sonorous Staff can’t be enchanted at a table at all.
| Enchantment | Goes On | Enchanting Table | Other Sources |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sculk Smite | Sword, Axe, Mace | Swords and Books | Loot Chests, fishing, Librarians |
| Catalysis | Sword, Axe, Mace | No | Ancient Temple basement Chests |
| Volume | Sonorous Staff | Books only | Loot Chests, fishing, Librarians |
| Reverberation | Sonorous Staff | Books only | Loot Chests, fishing, Librarians |
A tamed Sculk Snapper is another way to get all four, as it’ll drop a random Enchanted Book now and then while it’s close to you. Each Snapper will only drop up to 8 of these in its lifetime, but the book can have almost any enchantment in the game, including Catalysis.
Sculk Smite
Sculk Smite works like Smite, only against sculk mobs, adding 2.5 damage per level up to 12.5 at level V. It hits the Warden, Phantoms and every hostile mob in the Otherside, so it’s the one most players want first, and it can’t share a weapon with Sharpness.
There’s a full breakdown of the damage, which mobs it affects and how it compares to Sharpness on the Sculk Smite page. It’s in both the 1.20.1 and 1.21.1 versions of the mod, and it works the same way on both.
Catalysis
When you kill a mob with a Catalysis weapon, the experience it would have dropped is used to spread sculk outward from where it died, the same as if it had died next to a
Sculk Catalyst. Higher levels spread it further, but the mob won’t drop any experience orbs, so it’s a trade.
The sculk it spreads can grow
Sculk Sensors and
Sculk Shriekers too, although Shriekers grown this way are never able to summon a Warden. It’s mostly useful for building, or for covering an area in sculk without having to move a Catalyst around, and kills with it count toward the It Spreads advancement.
Where to Find It
Catalysis only shows up on Enchanted Books in the basement Chests of an Ancient Temple, and even there it’s one of the rarest drops. A tamed Sculk Snapper is the only other way to get it, so it won’t come from the Enchanting Table, Villagers or fishing.
Volume
Volume raises the damage of the
Sonorous Staff by a quarter of its base for each level, up to Volume IV. A fully charged blast does 50 damage without it, and Volume IV pushes that close to 100, which is enough to take out most mobs in a single shot.
| Volume Level | Damage |
|---|---|
| None | 50 |
| I | 62 |
| II | 74 |
| III | 87 |
| IV | 99 |
The staff is fully charged once it starts to glow, after holding right-click for a little over 6 seconds, and a shorter charge does much less damage. Mobs further along the blast take up to a third less, so it hits hardest on whatever is closest to you.
Reverberation
Reverberation makes the Sonorous Staff blast travel further, up to level III, and its range also grows the longer you charge it. With no Reverberation, a fully charged blast reaches about 22 blocks, while Reverberation III takes it out to 66 blocks.
| Reverberation Level | Range |
|---|---|
| None | 22 blocks |
| I | 36 blocks |
| II | 51 blocks |
| III | 66 blocks |
The blast stops at the first solid block in its path, so the extra range only helps in open caves or across a valley. Holding the charge for longer than the glow keeps adding a little more range, up to a limit of 80 blocks, which only Reverberation II and III are able to reach.
Enchanting the Staff
The Sonorous Staff can’t go in an Enchanting Table, so you’ll need Volume and Reverberation as Enchanted Books. Enchant plain Books at the table until they show up, then combine them with the staff at an Anvil, along with Unbreaking and Mending.
FAQ
It adds four: Sculk Smite and Catalysis for melee weapons, and Volume and Reverberation for the Sonorous Staff. Volume and Reverberation were added in 1.4, so the 1.20.1 version only has Sculk Smite and Catalysis.
Catalysis is a treasure enchantment, so it only comes on Enchanted Books from the basement Chests of Ancient Temples. A tamed Sculk Snapper can also drop it as one of its random books, but it won’t appear at an Enchanting Table or from Villagers.
Volume increases the damage of the Sonorous Staff by 25% of its base for each level, up to Volume IV. A fully charged blast goes from 50 damage to 99 at Volume IV.
The staff can’t be enchanted at a table, so every enchantment has to go on with an Anvil and an Enchanted Book. Volume and Reverberation Books can be made at an Enchanting Table, as well as found in Chests or bought from Librarians.
