Soul Dust is a crafting material from the Deeper and Darker mod that you’ll pick up from Sculk Snappers and Sculk Leeches, along with the Chests in an Ancient Temple. It’s a lot easier to come by than the Soul Crystal, as Sculk Snappers are one of the most common mobs you’ll run into in the Otherside, and they’ll usually come to you.
You’ll need two of them for the
Soul Elytra, and the rest can go into
Soundproof Glass or a Potion of Sculk Affinity. None of these take very much of it, so a short trip through the Deeplands is usually going to be enough for everything you’ll want to make with it.
Obtaining
The easiest source is the Sculk Snapper, which always drops one Soul Dust, with Looting adding up to one more per level. They’re found in packs of 3 to 6 in the Deeplands, and in smaller groups in the Echoing Forest and Blooming Caverns.

Sculk Leeches are able to drop one as well, though only about half of the time without Looting. You’ll mostly come across these when a fake
Ancient Vase breaks open, or when you mine a piece of fossilized
Crystallized Amber that has a Leech trapped inside it.
| Source | Amount | Chance |
|---|---|---|
| Sculk Snapper | 1 (+1 per Looting level) | Always |
| Sculk Leech | 0 to 1 (+1 per Looting level) | About half |
| Ancient Temple basement Chest | 3 to 7 | About 42% per Chest |
| Ancient Temple fountain Chest | 2 to 5 | About 21% per Chest |
| Fossilized Crystallized Amber | 1 | About 11% |
The basement Chests of an Ancient Temple are the best of the Chest sources, with a good chance of 3 to 7 at a time. If you’re clearing out a temple for its other loot anyway, you’ll usually come away with enough Soul Dust for a Soul Elytra, and without having to fight anything for it either.
Uses
The
Soul Elytra takes two Soul Dust, one on each side of the
Elytra, along with four
Sculk Bones and a
Soul Crystal. This is the only piece of gear that needs it, so there’s no reason to hold onto a big stack once you’ve made one.
Four Soul Dust around a single
Glass block will make two Soundproof Glass. It works like see-through
White Wool, as it blocks vibrations from passing through it, so a Sculk Sensor won’t pick up anything happening on the other side of it, even though you’re still able to see straight through.
Unlike normal Glass, Soundproof Glass drops as an item when you break it, even without Silk Touch. It’s safe to move it around while you’re still working out where it should go.
Brewing
Adding Soul Dust to a Potion of Invisibility in a
Brewing Stand turns it into a Potion of Sculk Affinity, and doing the same to a long Potion of Invisibility gives you the 8 minute version. It’s the cheaper way to brew it, as it saves your Soul Crystals for gear, and there’s more on what the effect does on the Sculk Affinity and Sculk Omen page.
FAQ
Kill Sculk Snappers, which always drop one Soul Dust and are common in the Deeplands. Sculk Leeches drop it about half of the time, and the basement and fountain Chests in Ancient Temples often hold a few as well.
It’s used to craft the Soul Elytra, which needs two, and Soundproof Glass, which takes four Soul Dust and a Glass block for two blocks. You can also add it to a Potion of Invisibility to brew a Potion of Sculk Affinity.
Put a Glass block in the middle of a Crafting Table and four Soul Dust above, below and to either side of it, which gives you two Soundproof Glass. It blocks vibrations the same way Wool does, so Sculk Sensors can’t hear through it.
Looting adds up to one extra Soul Dust per level on both Sculk Snappers and Sculk Leeches. With Looting III, a Sculk Snapper can drop as many as four, which makes a pack in the Deeplands worth a lot more.
