The Angler Fish is a hostile fish from the Deeper and Darker mod that swims in the pools of the Blooming Caverns in the Otherside. It’s a fast, toothy sculk fish that will leave you alone on land, but it’ll come straight for you as soon as you get into the water with it.
It only has 6 health, so it’s easy to kill if you can catch it, and it drops a
Raw Angler Fish that can be cooked into one of the better foods in the Otherside. It’s also one of the mobs you’ll need to kill for the Sculk Slayer advancement, which is the main reason most players go looking for one.
Spawning
Angler Fish spawn in groups of three to five in the water of the Blooming Caverns, which is the only biome in the Otherside where they appear. They need water to spawn in, so you’ll find them in the pools and flooded caves that are spread through the biome.

The Sludge is the other common mob in the Blooming Caverns, so you’ll usually have a few of those to deal with on the shore as well. The biome is in the Otherside, which you’ll reach through the Otherside Portal in an Ancient City.
Behavior
An Angler Fish will only attack players who are in the water, so you’re safe as long as you stay on dry land. If you do swim in, it’ll chase you down quickly, as it’s a fast swimmer, and each bite deals 3 damage on Normal, with a slightly longer reach than you’d expect from a fish.
It’ll also hunt
Cod and
Salmon if there are any in the water with it, though those don’t spawn in the Otherside on their own. It can’t be scooped up in a bucket like other fish, so you won’t be able to bring one home with you.
Fighting in the Water
They won’t come after you while you’re standing on the shore, so you’ll be able to hit any that swim close to the edge without them fighting back. If you need to swim across, a group of three to five can add up quickly, so it’s worth thinning them out from dry land first.
Weapons with Sculk Smite deal extra damage to them, as they count as sculk mobs, though with only 6 health almost anything will do. A Bow or a thrown Trident from the shore is often easier than chasing them around underwater.
Drops
The Angler Fish always drops one piece of food when it dies, and whether you get it raw or cooked depends on how it died. If it was on fire, or killed with a Fire Aspect weapon, it’ll drop the cooked version instead.
A
Raw Angler Fish only restores 1 hunger bar, so it’s worth cooking first. Cooking it in a
Furnace,
Smoker or on a
Campfire turns it into a
Cooked Angler Fish, which restores 3 hunger bars, the same as Cooked Salmon.
The Raw and Cooked Angler Fish were added in 1.4, so they aren’t in the 1.20.1 version of the mod, which stops at 1.3.3. On that version, the Angler Fish doesn’t drop anything at all.
Killing one also counts toward the Sculk Slayer advancement, which asks for the Stalker, the Shriek Worm, the Warden and most of the other sculk mobs. The Angler Fish is easy to forget about since it only lives in one biome, so it’s worth killing one while you’re in the Blooming Caverns.
FAQ
It’s hostile, but it only attacks players who are in the water with it, so you’re safe while you stay on land. It bites for 3 damage and swims quickly, which makes a group of them dangerous to swim through.
They spawn in groups of three to five in the water of the Blooming Caverns, which is one of the biomes of the Otherside. You’ll find them in the pools and flooded caves of that biome, and nowhere else.
It drops one
Raw Angler Fish, or a Cooked Angler Fish if it was killed with fire. Cooking the raw one in a Furnace, Smoker or Campfire turns it into food that restores 3 hunger bars.
No bucket will pick one up, unlike Cod or Salmon, so you can’t move them to an aquarium. You’ll have to visit the Blooming Caverns whenever you’d like to see one, or use a Spawn Egg in Creative.
