The Sonorous Staff is a ranged weapon from the Deeper and Darker mod that fires a sonic boom like the Warden’s, hitting everything in a straight line in front of you. You’ll craft it from the
Heart of the Deep that a Warden drops, along with
Soul Crystals and
Sculk Bones from the Otherside.
You charge it by holding right-click like a Bow, and a full charge deals 50 damage that goes straight through armor and Protection. It only has 320 durability, though, and each blast uses one up, so you’ll want to save it for the mobs that are worth it.
Where to Get It
The staff can’t be found anywhere, so you’ll have to craft it, and the part that takes the longest is the Heart of the Deep. A Warden drops one every time it’s killed, which means fighting one in an Ancient City before you’re able to make the staff.

The Soul Crystals come from the Stalker, which climbs out of fake Ancient Vases, and the Sculk Bones from the Shattered. Both of them turn up in Ancient Temple chests as well, which can save you a lot of hunting if you’ve found a temple.
Keep in mind that the Heart of the Deep is also what you’ll use to open the Otherside Portal, and it’s used up when you do. You’ll need to kill two Wardens if you want both the staff and a portal, unless someone else has already opened one.
Crafting
The Sonorous Staff is crafted with the Heart of the Deep in the top right corner of a
Crafting Table, 2 Soul Crystals beside and below it, and 2 Sculk Bones running down to the bottom left corner. It’s a diagonal shape, a bit like a Fishing Rod, and it doesn’t matter which way round you place it.
You’ll repair it with Soul Crystals at an
Anvil, where each one restores a quarter of the staff’s durability. It’s able to take Unbreaking and Mending as well, which is a lot cheaper over time, as Soul Crystals are hard to farm.
Stats
The longer you charge the staff, the more damage it deals and the further the blast reaches, up to 50 damage after about 6 seconds. The staff starts to glow once the damage is maxed out, though the blast does keep reaching a little further the longer you hold it, which helps with mobs that are a long way off.
| Charge Time | Damage | Range (Blocks) |
|---|---|---|
| 0.5 seconds | 5 | 11 |
| 1 second | 9 | 14 |
| 2 seconds | 20 | 17 |
| 3 seconds | 35 | 18 |
| 4 seconds | 44 | 20 |
| 6.4 seconds (glowing) | 50 | 22 |
Mobs further along the blast take a little less, with anything at the very end taking about two thirds of the damage. There’s a 1 second cooldown after each blast, and every one costs 1 durability whether it hits anything or not.
Special Effects
The Sonic Boom
The blast travels in a straight line from your eyes and hits every mob along the way, so you’re able to hit a whole row of them at once. It stops at the first solid block it reaches, but it’ll pass through blocks you can see through, like Glass and Leaves.

The damage is the same type as the Warden’s sonic boom, which means armor and Protection won’t reduce it at all. Every mob it hits is also pushed back in the direction you’re facing, unless it has knockback resistance, so you can knock mobs off ledges with it.
Volume and Reverberation
The mod adds two enchantments that only go on the staff, Volume for more damage and Reverberation for more range. You can’t put the staff in an
Enchanting Table, so you’ll need Enchanted Books for both of them, which come from an Enchanting Table or a Librarian Villager.
| Enchantment | Max Level | Full Charge |
|---|---|---|
| None | – | 50 damage, 22 blocks |
| Volume IV | IV | 100 damage |
| Reverberation III | III | 66 blocks |
With Volume IV and Reverberation III together, a glowing charge deals 99 damage and reaches 66 blocks. Both of these were added in 1.4, so they aren’t in the 1.20.1 version of the mod, which stops at 1.3.3, and the staff’s range is shorter there too. The Enchantments page has the rest of the details.
FAQ
It fires a sonic boom in a straight line, hitting every mob in its path for up to 50 damage at full charge, and that damage ignores armor and Protection. You charge it by holding right-click like a Bow, and each blast uses 1 durability with a 1 second cooldown afterwards.
Put a Heart of the Deep in the top right corner, 2 Soul Crystals next to it and 2 Sculk Bones down to the bottom left corner of a Crafting Table. The Heart of the Deep comes from killing a Warden, the Soul Crystals from the Stalker and the Sculk Bones from the Shattered.
Volume adds damage and Reverberation adds range, and both only go on the staff, along with Unbreaking and Mending. It can’t go in an Enchanting Table, so you’ll need Enchanted Books and an Anvil, as there’s no other way to get them on.
About 6 seconds, as it reaches its full 50 damage at 6.4 seconds and starts glowing to show it’s ready. A 3 second charge already deals 35 damage, which is enough for most of the mobs in the Otherside if you’re in a hurry.
