Spell Turret

Spell Turrets are blocks in Ars Nouveau that cast a spell whenever they get a redstone signal, a bit like a Dispenser that fires magic instead of items, and as they take their Source from a nearby Source Jar, they won't use any of your mana. The Basic Spell Turret is crafted from Source Gems, Gold Ingots and a Block of Redstone, and its spell is set by using a Spell Parchment on it. The other three are upgrades of the basic one, with the Enchanted Spell Turret and the Timer Spell Turret made in the Enchanting Apparatus, and the Adjustable Spell Turret able to be aimed. They're one of the best ways of automating things like tree farms, mob farms and quick smelting.

Spell Turrets are blocks in Ars Nouveau that cast a spell whenever they get a redstone signal, a bit like a Dispenser that fires magic instead of items. They use Source from a nearby Source Jar instead of your mana, which makes them one of the best ways of automating things like tree farms, mob farms and quick smelting.

There are four kinds of turret, which are the Basic Spell Turret, the Enchanted Spell Turret, the Timer Spell Turret and the Adjustable Spell Turret. They all work in the same way, with the other three being upgrades of the Basic Spell Turret that make it cheaper to run, fire on its own or aim in any direction.

Crafting the Basic Spell Turret

The Basic Spell Turret is crafted from four Source Gems, four Gold Ingots and a Block of Redstone in a Crafting Table. Every other turret is made from a Basic Spell Turret, so you’ll always need to craft this one first.

Setting a Spell

A turret casts whatever spell is written on a Spell Parchment, which you’ll need to use on the turret to set it. To write a spell onto the parchment, place a Blank Parchment on a Scribe’s Table and use it with your spell book while sneaking, and the spell you’ve got selected is copied onto it.

Turrets are only able to use spells that start with Projectile or Touch, so Self and the other forms won’t work. A Touch spell hits the block right in front of the turret, whereas a Projectile spell fires in the direction the turret is facing, the same way a Dispenser shoots arrows.

Each time it fires, the turret takes Source equal to the spell’s mana cost from a Source Jar within 10 blocks. You’re also able to link it to one specific jar, by using the Dominion Wand on the jar and then on the turret, which is handy if you’d like to keep a few turrets from all drawing from the same jar.

Every Spell Turret

The Enchanted Spell Turret and the Timer Spell Turret are both made in the Enchanting Apparatus with a Basic Spell Turret in the middle, whereas the Adjustable Spell Turret is just a Basic Spell Turret crafted on its own. None of the upgrades cost any Source to make.

The Timer Spell Turret starts at one shot a second, and right clicking it adds time while punching it takes time away, or ten seconds at a time while sneaking. Setting it to zero or giving it a redstone signal stops it, and using the Dominion Wand on it locks the timer so nobody changes it by accident.

To aim the Adjustable Spell Turret, use the Dominion Wand on the turret and then on the block you’d like it to point at. It’s the only turret that can face an angle, which is useful for hitting a spot that isn’t straight in front of it.

Spell Turret Ideas

A Touch turret with Fell pointed at the bottom of a tree cuts the whole thing down in one go, so it’s a good start for a small tree farm next to a Grow turret that speeds the saplings up. Pointing a Touch and Harvest turret at crops harvests them without breaking the plant, so they grow back on their own.

For smelting, a Touch spell with Smelt and AOE cooks a whole area of items or blocks at once, which is a lot quicker than a Furnace. Mob farms work well too, with a Projectile and Harm spell and Luck added for extra drops, and if the spell uses Item Pickup or Place Block, a Chest next to the turret is where the items go or come from.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you use a Spell Turret in Ars Nouveau?
›

Write a spell onto a Spell Parchment at the Scribe’s Table, use it on the turret, and give the turret a redstone signal. It takes Source from a Source Jar within 10 blocks each time it fires.

Why won’t my Spell Turret fire?
›

The spell has to start with Projectile or Touch, and there needs to be enough Source in a Source Jar within 10 blocks. A Basic Spell Turret also needs a redstone signal every time you want it to cast.

What does the Enchanted Spell Turret do?
›

It casts spells for half the Source of a Basic Spell Turret. It’s made in the Enchanting Apparatus from a Basic Spell Turret, a Source Gem Block and two Blaze Rods.

How do you aim a Spell Turret?
›

Craft an Adjustable Spell Turret from a Basic Spell Turret, then use the Dominion Wand on it and on the block you’d like it to aim at.
