The
Scribe’s Table is the block in Ars Nouveau that’s used to craft glyphs, which are the pieces you put together to make spells in your spell book. It’s also where you’re able to write a spell onto
Spell Parchment, so it ends up being one of the blocks you’ll use the most, from your very first spell all the way to the end of the mod.
Every glyph costs a few items and some of your experience, and once it’s made you’ll need to use it to learn it. You start the game already knowing a handful of the basic ones, so the Scribe’s Table is how you get everything else, like Blink, Heal and all of the summoning glyphs.
The Spell Builder lists the items and experience for every glyph in a spell, so you know what to bring to the table.
Crafting the Scribe’s Table
The
Scribe’s Table is crafted using three
Archwood Slabs, two
Gold Nuggets and two Archwood Logs, with the slabs going across the top row. When you place it down it takes up two blocks, the same way a bed does, so you’ll need a bit of space next to it.
Unlike most of the blocks in Ars Nouveau, the Scribe’s Table doesn’t use any Source, so you’re able to make one as soon as you’ve found some Archwood trees. It’s usually best placed near your chests though, as it’s able to take the items it needs straight out of them, which saves a lot of time.
Crafting Glyphs
To craft a glyph, you’ll need to right click the
Scribe’s Table while holding your spell book, which opens a list of every glyph in the mod. Once you’ve picked the glyph you want and pressed select, the experience it costs is taken straight away, and the items it needs are shown floating above the table.
The items can then be thrown onto the table, and it’ll take one at a time until it has everything. After that the Scribe’s Table works on the glyph for about 6 seconds, before the finished glyph pops out on top. If you change your mind and pick a different glyph part way through, the items you’ve already put in are given back.

The glyph isn’t learned just by making it. You’ll need to right click with the glyph in your hand, which uses it up and adds it to the glyphs you know, and from then on it shows up in your spell book. The five glyphs you know from the start are
Projectile,
Touch,
Self,
Break and
Harm, so there’s no need to craft those.
Experience Costs
Every glyph has an experience cost as well as its items, and there’s three different amounts. Most of the early glyphs cost 27 experience, which is about the same as going from nothing to level 3, whereas the stronger ones cost 55 or 160. That’s a lot more than it sounds, as 160 experience is everything you’d have at level 10, so a mob farm nearby helps a lot.
| Glyph | Experience | Items |
|---|---|---|
| 27 | ||
| 27 | ||
| 27 | ||
| 27 | ||
| 55 | ||
| 160 |
A lot of the glyph recipes need Essences, which are made in the
Imbuement Chamber. So it’s worth getting that set up early, as it’ll save you a lot of waiting around when you’re trying to craft a few glyphs in a row.
Pulling Items from Storage
You don’t have to throw every item in by hand, as the
Scribe’s Table will also take items out of any chest or container within 6 blocks of it, and up to 2 blocks above or below. It takes one item every second, and you’ll see each one fly over to the table from the chest it came from.
This is the reason most players build it next to their storage, since you can just pick a glyph and wait for it to collect everything. If you’d rather it didn’t take anything from your chests, using the
Dominion Wand on the Scribe’s Table turns this off, and using it again turns it back on.
Spell Books and Glyph Tiers
Glyphs are split into three tiers, and the spell book you’re using decides which tiers you’re able to put into a spell. The
Novice Spell Book can only use Tier 1 glyphs, the
Mage’s Spell Book can use Tier 2 as well, and the
Archmage Spell Book can use every glyph in the mod, including the Tier 3 ones like Blink.
The
Scribe’s Table itself doesn’t care which spell book you have, so you’re able to craft and learn a Tier 3 glyph early on. You just won’t be able to add it to a spell until your spell book is a high enough tier, and trying to will tell you that the glyph is too powerful for your current spell book.
Inscribing Spell Parchment
The
Scribe’s Table is also used to write spells onto
Spell Parchment. To do this, you’ll need to put a
Blank Parchment on the table, then switch your spell book to the spell you want, the same as if you were going to cast it, and then right click the table with the spell book while sneaking.
Blank Parchment is crafted from a piece of
Paper surrounded by eight
Magebloom Fiber, and a used Spell Parchment can be crafted on its own to wipe it back to blank. Once a spell has been written onto something, it’s also possible to hide it for good using
Manipulation Essence, so nobody else is able to see what the spell is.
Frequently Asked Questions
Right click the
Scribe’s Table with your spell book, pick the glyph and press select, then throw the items shown onto the table. The experience is taken when you select it, and the glyph pops out about 6 seconds after the last item goes in, ready to be learned with a right click.
Glyphs cost 27, 55 or 160 experience, depending on the glyph. That’s about the same as levels 3, 5 and 10 from nothing, and the experience is taken as soon as you pick the glyph at the
Scribe’s Table.
The glyph is probably a higher tier than your spell book. The
Novice Spell Book only takes Tier 1 glyphs, the
Mage’s Spell Book adds Tier 2, and the
Archmage Spell Book is needed for Tier 3.
Yes, it pulls the items it needs from any container within 6 blocks, one at a time. You’re able to turn this off by using the
Dominion Wand on the
Scribe’s Table.
