Whirlisprig

Whirlisprigs are small flying nature spirits in Ars Nouveau, and once one has been tamed it will live at a flower and produce logs, crops and flowers from the plants growing around its home, which works like a farm that doesn't need any redstone. Getting one is a little different from the other creatures, as you'll need to grow a tree next to a wild Whirlisprig to get a Whirlisprig Token, which is then made into a Whirlisprig Charm. Its home needs a Chest placed next to the blossom for the items to go into, and it uses a bit of Source for each batch it makes. How much it produces depends on how happy it is, which comes down to how varied the plants around it are.

The Whirlisprig is a small flying nature spirit from Ars Nouveau, and once you’ve tamed one, it lives at a flower and produces natural materials like logs, crops and flowers from the plants around its home. It’s a bit like an automatic farm that doesn’t need any redstone, as the Whirlisprig makes the items and puts them in a Chest for you.

Getting one is a little different to the other creatures in the mod, since you’ll need to grow a tree next to a wild Whirlisprig to get a Whirlisprig Token. After that it’s crafted into a Whirlisprig Charm, and how much the Whirlisprig makes depends on how happy it is with the plants around its flower.

Finding Whirlisprigs

Whirlisprigs spawn on grass all over the Overworld in small groups of one or two, and they’re easy to recognise as small green sprites that float around following animals, mobs and players. They’re a lot more common in an Archwood Forest, where you’ll usually find a few of them along with Starbuncles and Drygmys.

Wild Whirlisprigs aren’t hostile, and they’ll often come and follow you around for a while. They have 20 health and heal over time, so you won’t need to worry about keeping one alive while you get ready to tame it.

Getting a Whirlisprig Token

To get a Whirlisprig Token, you’ll need to grow a tree within 10 blocks of a wild Whirlisprig. Planting a sapling like an Oak Sapling near one and using Bone Meal on it is the quickest way, and growing it naturally works too, as long as the Whirlisprig is still close by when the tree grows.

Once the tree grows, the Whirlisprig glows for a few seconds and then turns into a Whirlisprig Token, which drops on the ground where it was. Every wild Whirlisprig nearby is turned into a token by the same tree, so if a few of them are following you, it’s worth growing the tree with all of them close together.

Crafting the Whirlisprig Charm

The Whirlisprig Charm is made in the Enchanting Apparatus, with the Whirlisprig Token in the middle and eight items on the Arcane Pedestals around it. You’ll need a Source Gem, a Magebloom Seed, a Magebloom, a Diamond, an Oak Sapling, a Spruce Sapling, a Birch Sapling and some Wheat Seeds, and it doesn’t cost any Source.

Setting Up a Whirlisprig Home

To place your Whirlisprig, use the Whirlisprig Charm on any flower, like a Poppy or a Dandelion, which turns it into a Whirlisprig Blossom, and the Whirlisprig appears on it a few seconds later. The blossom is its home, so it’ll stay nearby and look after the plants within 10 blocks of it.

For the Whirlisprig to actually make anything, it needs a Chest or another container placed right next to the blossom, which is where the items go. It also needs Source, as each batch of items uses 250 Source from a Source Jar within 5 blocks of the blossom, so it’s worth putting a jar next to it with an Agronomic Sourcelink nearby to keep it filled.

Using the Glyph of Dispel on a tamed Whirlisprig turns it back into its charm, if you’d like to move it somewhere else. You’re also able to change its color by giving it Orange, Yellow, White or Green Dye.

Keeping Your Whirlisprig Happy

How fast a Whirlisprig makes items depends on its mood, which comes from the blocks in its home. It counts everything within 10 blocks of the blossom, from one block below it up to 30 blocks above, and it checks again every couple of minutes, so a change you make won’t show up straight away.

Grass, water and leaves are worth one point each, whereas logs, flowers, crops and other plants are worth two. A few blocks are also liked a lot, like Pumpkins, Melons, Sugar Cane, Cactus and mushroom blocks. However, only the first 50 of each kind of block count, so a huge field of one crop won’t help much, and you’ll get a lot more out of lots of different plants.

Very happy750
Extremely happy1,000

An extremely happy Whirlisprig works about four times faster than one that’s only content, so it’s worth building up its home. You’re able to check its mood by using it with an empty hand, and using it while holding a block tells you whether it likes that block and if it already has enough of it.

What Whirlisprigs Produce

A Whirlisprig makes the same items you’d get from breaking the blocks in its home, and the more of a block there is, the more likely it is to make that item. So if you’d like lots of logs, plant more trees, and if you’d like crops, plant more crops. The number of different blocks also matters, as each batch gives three items plus one more for every two kinds of block in its home.

Whirlisprigs never make Dirt or any kind of seeds, so you won’t end up with a chest full of those. If there’s anything else you don’t want, you’re able to use an Item Scroll: Deny with those items on it on the Whirlisprig, and it’ll stop making them. A tamed Whirlisprig also uses Bone Meal on the plants around it every now and then, so your crops grow a bit faster too.

The Whirlisprig Familiar

A Whirlisprig can also be turned into a familiar by performing the Ritual of Binding next to one. As a familiar, it makes every Earth glyph cost half as much mana, and food gives you 40% more saturation while it’s with you, which is handy if you’re casting a lot of Earth spells.

There’s also a Thread named The Whirlisprig, which makes food give 30% more saturation for each level of the slot it’s in. The Threads page goes through how the slots work on mage armor.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you get a Whirlisprig Token?
›

Grow a tree within 10 blocks of a wild Whirlisprig, for example by using Bone Meal on a sapling next to it. The Whirlisprig turns into a Whirlisprig Token a few seconds after the tree grows.

Why isn’t my Whirlisprig producing anything?
›

It needs a Chest right next to its Whirlisprig Blossom, and a Source Jar with at least 250 Source within 5 blocks. If both are there, it’s probably unhappy, so add more kinds of plants and trees around it.

How do you make a Whirlisprig happy?
›

Fill the area within 10 blocks of its blossom with lots of different plants, trees and crops. Only the first 50 of each block count, so variety matters more than having a lot of one thing.

Does a Whirlisprig need Source?
›

Yes, each batch of items costs 250 Source, taken from a Source Jar within 5 blocks of the Whirlisprig Blossom.
