Mana is what every spell in Ars Nouveau costs to cast, and it’s shown as a blue bar above your hotbar while you’re holding a spell book. You’ll start with a fairly small pool of it, but nearly everything you do in the mod adds to it, from learning glyphs and upgrading your spell book to wearing mage armor and trinkets.
There are two numbers to keep an eye on, your max Mana, which is how much you’re able to store, and your Mana regen, which is how fast it fills back up. Both of them go up from the same places, so getting more of one usually means you’ll get more of the other as well.
The Armor & Threads Planner works out your max Mana and regen from your glyphs, book, armor, enchantments and trinkets.
Starting Mana
Every player starts with 100 max Mana and 5 Mana regen per second, before anything else is added. Your first
Novice Spell Book adds another 50 max Mana and 1 regen straight away, so a new player will usually have around 150 Mana to work with.
That’s enough for a few basic spells, though a mining spell with a couple of augments will empty it fairly quickly. Most of the early Mana comes from learning glyphs, which is why it’s worth crafting a few at the
Scribe’s Table even before you need them.
Where Mana Comes From
These are all the things that add to your max Mana and regen in the base mod. Most of them add a flat amount, whereas the
Magic Capacity Thread adds a percentage of everything else, so it’s best saved until your Mana is already fairly high.

| Source | Max Mana | Mana Regen |
|---|---|---|
| Each glyph you know | 15 | 0.33 per second |
| Spell book tier | 50 per tier | 1 per tier |
| Each piece of mage armor | 30 per tier | 1 per tier |
| Mana Boost enchantment | 25 per level, per piece | None |
| Mana Regen enchantment | None | 2 per level, per piece |
| 50 | None | |
| None | 3 per second | |
| 10 each | 1 each | |
| Potion of Mana Regeneration | None | 10 per level |
| 10% per slot level | None |
Glyphs are the biggest source over time, as a player who knows most of the mod’s glyphs will have well over a thousand max Mana from those alone. The spell book bonus is based on the best book you’ve ever used, and the glyph bonus is only counted when you use your book, so right clicking with it after learning a new glyph will update your Mana.
Mage Armor and Enchantments
A full set of mage armor at Tier 3 adds 360 max Mana and 12 regen, and it’s the same for all three sets. Putting Mana Boost III on all four pieces adds another 300 max Mana, whereas Mana Regen III on all four adds 24 regen, so the enchantments are worth almost as much as the armor itself.
Both enchantments are made in the
Enchanting Apparatus and go up to level III. They also work on vanilla armor, which is handy if you’re wearing something like Netherite and don’t want to swap it out for mage armor.
Amulets and Rings
The
Amulet of Mana Boost and
Amulet of Mana Regen are both made in the
Enchanting Apparatus from a
Dull Trinket, with Diamonds and
Source Gems on the pedestals. They go in the necklace slot, which only holds one amulet, so you’ll need to pick between 50 max Mana and 3 regen.
The two rings work differently, as their main job is to make your spells cheaper. The
Ring of Lesser Discount takes 10 Mana off every spell you cast, and the
Ring of Greater Discount takes off 20, with each ring also adding 10 max Mana and 1 regen.
You have two ring slots, and the discounts add together, so two Greater rings will take 40 Mana off each spell, which adds up quickly with a spell you’re casting over and over, like a mining spell. It’s one of the few ways to make a spell cheaper rather than giving yourself more Mana to spend on it.
Both rings start from a
Ring of Potential, and the Greater one is made by upgrading a Lesser one in the Enchanting Apparatus. So wearing two Greater rings means crafting two Lesser rings first, along with two Rings of Potential.
Potions of Mana Regeneration
The Potion of Mana Regeneration is brewed from an Awkward Potion and a
Sourceberry, and it adds 10 Mana regen for 3 minutes. Adding
Glowstone Dust makes it level II, which doubles this to 20, and
Redstone Dust makes it last 8 minutes instead.
This is one of the biggest regen boosts you’ll be able to get early on, as 10 regen is more than a full set of Tier 2 mage armor gives you. It’s worth keeping a few in a
Potion Jar near your base, so you’re able to top up before a fight or a long mining trip.
Sourceberry Foods
The mod’s own foods give you Mana Regeneration as well, which makes them a handy snack while you’re casting a lot. A
Sourceberry on its own only gives it for 5 seconds, whereas a
Source Berry Roll, crafted from three
Wheat and a Sourceberry, gives level I for a minute along with 8 hunger.
The
Source Berry Pie is the best of the three, as it fills 9 hunger and gives Mana Regeneration II for a minute. It’s crafted from an
Egg,
Sugar, a
Magebloom and three Sourceberries, and if you’re growing a lot of berries, nine of them can be packed into a
Sourceberry Sack to save space.
Things That Lower Your Mana
Summoning a familiar reserves 15% of your max Mana for as long as it’s out, so you’ll have a bit less to cast with while it’s following you. The Hex effect is worse, as it halves your Mana regen while it lasts, which is something to watch out for if a spell or a mob puts it on you.
Neither of these change how much Mana your spells cost, they only change how much you’ve got to spend. If you’re running out a lot while a familiar is out, it’s usually better to add a ring or an amulet than to send the familiar away.
Frequently Asked Questions
Learning more glyphs, upgrading your spell book and wearing mage armor all add max Mana and regen. Mana Boost and Mana Regen enchantments, the amulets, the discount rings and the
Magic Capacity Thread add more on top of that.
Every player starts with 100 max Mana and 5 regen per second. Your first
Novice Spell Book adds another 50 max Mana and 1 regen, and every glyph you learn adds 15 more.
Mage armor adds 1 regen per tier on each piece, and the Mana Regen enchantment adds 2 per level on each piece. The
Amulet of Mana Regen adds 3 and a Potion of Mana Regeneration adds 10 for each level, which is the quickest boost early on.
The
Ring of Lesser Discount takes 10 Mana off every spell and the
Ring of Greater Discount takes off 20. There are two ring slots and the discounts add together, so two Greater rings take 40 off, and each ring also adds 10 max Mana and 1 regen.
