Spell Parchment

A Spell Parchment holds a copy of one of your spells in Ars Nouveau, and although you won't cast from it yourself, it's used to give a spell to other things, like a Spell Turret or a piece of gear with the Reactive enchantment. It's made from Blank Parchment, which is crafted from Paper and Magebloom Fiber, and the spell is written onto it at the Scribe's Table. The Reactive enchantment is able to put a spell onto almost any item, and each of its levels is added in the Enchanting Apparatus with its own recipe and Source cost. Caster Tomes are a little different, as they come with a spell already written in them, and they can only be found in chests rather than crafted.

A Spell Parchment is an item in Ars Nouveau that holds a copy of one of your spells. You won’t cast from it yourself, but it’s how you give a spell to other things, like a Spell Turret or a piece of gear with the Reactive enchantment, so it ends up being used a lot once you start automating things.

It starts out as a Blank Parchment, which you’ll write your spell onto at the Scribe’s Table. There’s also the Caster Tome, a book that already has a spell written in it and casts it for less mana, although you won’t be able to craft those, as they’re only found in chests.

How to Make a Spell Parchment

A Blank Parchment is crafted from a piece of Paper surrounded by eight Magebloom Fiber. To write a spell onto it, place the Blank Parchment on a Scribe’s Table, pick the spell you want in your spell book, then sneak and use the spell book on the table, and the Blank Parchment turns into a Spell Parchment with that spell.

Blank Parchment

The Spell Parchment takes the spell’s name, so it’s worth naming your spells in the spell book first to keep track of which parchment is which. You’re also able to dye one by crafting it with any dye, and crafting a Spell Parchment on its own wipes it back into a Blank Parchment, so you won’t waste anything if you change your mind.

What Spell Parchments Are Used For

The main use is for Spell Turrets, which cast whatever spell is on the parchment you use on them. A turret only accepts spells that start with Projectile or Touch, so it’s worth making a separate parchment for each turret setup. The Spell Turret page has a few spell ideas for farms.

The other big use is the Reactive enchantment, which puts a spell onto almost any item. It’s also needed for the Prestidigitation recipe, and you’re able to hide the spell on a parchment so other players can’t see it, by using a Manipulation Essence on it.

The Reactive Enchantment

Reactive is an enchantment from Ars Nouveau that’s able to go on any item, including tools, weapons and armor. An item with Reactive has a chance to cast its spell whenever you use it, swing it or get hurt while wearing it, and the spell uses your own mana, so it won’t go off if you don’t have enough.

To add Reactive I, put the item in the middle of the Enchanting Apparatus, with an inscribed Spell Parchment, a Block of Lapis Lazuli and a Source Gem Block on the pedestals. It costs 3,000 Source, and each level after that needs the item from the level before it in the middle, along with more Source.

Level Pedestal items Source
Reactive ISpell Parchment, Block of Lapis Lazuli, Source Gem Block3,000
Reactive II4 Blaze Powder, Air Essence, Earth Essence, Fire Essence, Water Essence6,000
Reactive III4 Emeralds, Ender Pearl, Abjuration Essence, Conjuration Essence, Manipulation Essence9,000
Reactive IV4 Diamonds, Ender Pearl, Wilden Tribute9,000

Each level adds a 25% chance of the spell going off, so Reactive IV casts it every single time. If you’d like to change the spell on a Reactive item later, put it back in the Enchanting Apparatus with a new Spell Parchment on a pedestal, which costs another 3,000 Source but keeps the enchantment level.

Caster Tomes

A Caster Tome is a book that comes with a spell already written in it, and there are over 40 of them, each one named after someone from the Ars Nouveau community. They cast their spell for half its usual mana cost, or for your whole mana bar if that’s smaller, so they’re able to cast spells that would normally be too expensive for you.

Caster Tomes can’t be crafted, as they only show up as rare loot in chests. They’re found in Dungeons, Mineshafts, Jungle and Desert Pyramids, Strongholds, Woodland Mansions, Pillager Outposts, Ruined Portals, Ocean Ruins, Nether Fortresses, Bastions and End Cities, with about a 1 in 10 chance of one turning up in each chest.
