The
Enchanting Apparatus is a block in Ars Nouveau that’s used to craft most of the mod’s tools, charms, armor and Threads. It’s a bit like a crafting table, but instead of a grid, the ingredients are placed on
Arcane Pedestals around it, and the main item goes on the Enchanting Apparatus itself. It can also be used for enchanting items, and there’s a few enchantment levels you’re able to get with it that aren’t possible with a vanilla
Enchanting Table.
Usually the Enchanting Apparatus is one of the first things you’ll build after the
Imbuement Chamber, as that’s where your
Source Gems and Essences end up being used. The first item most players craft with it will be the
Dominion Wand, which you’ll need for linking nearly everything in the mod together, like Source Relays and Starbuncles.
Setting Up the Enchanting Apparatus
To set up the
Enchanting Apparatus, you’ll need three different blocks, and they all use
Sourcestone in their recipes. Sourcestone is crafted by surrounding a
Source Gem with eight
Stone, which gives you eight Sourcestone back, so you won’t need many Source Gems for this. Along with two Sourcestone, the Enchanting Apparatus also needs a
Diamond, two
Gold Ingots and four
Gold Nuggets.
The
Arcane Core is crafted from six Sourcestone, two Gold Ingots and a Source Gem. Each
Arcane Pedestal takes four Sourcestone, a Source Gem and four Gold Nuggets, and since most recipes use up to eight pedestals, it’s worth making all eight at once, rather than finding out you’re short in the middle of a recipe.
Once you’ve got them, the Enchanting Apparatus needs to be placed directly on top of the Arcane Core, otherwise right clicking it will only tell you that an Arcane Core is needed. The Arcane Pedestals can go anywhere within 3 blocks of the Enchanting Apparatus, including above or below it, so they don’t have to be in a perfect ring, although most people will build them that way anyway since it looks nicer.
Any recipe that uses Source will also need a
Source Jar within 10 blocks of the Enchanting Apparatus. That’s a lot further than the
Imbuement Chamber, which only reaches 2 blocks, so if you build the two machines close together, the same Source Jars should be able to cover both of them.
Crafting with the Enchanting Apparatus
Crafting with it is fairly simple, you’ll need to place each ingredient on its own
Arcane Pedestal, and then right click the
Enchanting Apparatus while holding the main item for that recipe. The item will float above the Enchanting Apparatus while it’s crafting, which takes around 10 seconds, and once it’s done the finished item just sits there until you right click it again to take it out.
It’s worth knowing that the items on the Arcane Pedestals do get used up here, which isn’t the case with the
Imbuement Chamber. Anything that would normally leave something behind still does though, so a
Lava Bucket on one of the pedestals will turn back into an empty
Bucket. The only item that isn’t used at all is
Spell Parchment, which stays on the pedestal when you’re using it to inscribe a spell.
When the recipe isn’t right, the Enchanting Apparatus won’t take the item, and the pedestals it’s able to see will light up for a few seconds, which is handy for checking if one of them is too far away. If the item you tried is actually used in the
Imbuement Chamber, it’ll also ask if you meant to use that instead, since the two machines are easy to mix up at first.

Surprisingly, most of the crafting recipes don’t cost any Source, and it’s only the enchantments, the armor upgrades and a couple of others like copying a
Warp Scroll that will need a
Source Jar nearby. For the ones that do, all of the Source gets taken out of the Source Jars at the start, and the recipe won’t begin at all until there’s enough Source in range.
| Item | Main item | Pedestal items |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | ||
| 4 | ||
| Any seeds | 4 | |
| 4 Quartz, 4 | ||
| 4 | ||
Some of these recipes will keep whatever was already on the main item, so the enchantments on a
Diamond Sword carry over when it becomes an
Enchanter’s Sword, and the same goes for a
Bow turning into an
Enchanter’s Bow. There’s a lot more recipes than the ones in the table, so for the full list it’s easiest to check the Tattered Tome that the mod gives you, or JEI if you have it installed.
Enchanting Items
As well as crafting, the
Enchanting Apparatus can also add enchantments onto an item, by putting the item in the middle and the right ingredients on the
Arcane Pedestals. Enchanting does cost Source though, anywhere from 2,000 for the first level of something like Sharpness, up to 9,000 for the more expensive ones such as Silk Touch, Fortune III and Looting III.
You’ll have to add each level one at a time, as the item needs to already have the level before it. So if you wanted Protection IV on a chestplate, you’d be doing Protection I, II, III and then IV as four separate recipes. It does also check that the enchantment is compatible, so it won’t let you put Protection onto a sword, or Fortune onto a pickaxe that already has Silk Touch.
| Enchantment | Levels | Source per level |
|---|---|---|
| Protection | I to V | 2,000 to 8,000 |
| Fire Protection, Projectile Protection | I to V | 2,000 to 8,000 |
| Sharpness, Smite, Bane of Arthropods | I to V | 2,000 to 8,000 |
| Efficiency | I to V | 2,000 to 8,000 |
| Unbreaking | I to III | 2,000 to 5,000 |
| Fortune, Looting | I to III | 6,000 to 9,000 |
| Silk Touch, Infinity, Multishot | I | 9,000 |
| Mana Boost, Mana Regen | I to III | 2,000 to 5,000 |
Protection, Fire Protection and Projectile Protection are the ones most people use it for, as the Enchanting Apparatus can take them up to level V, whereas vanilla stops at IV. However, there isn’t a recipe for Mending, so you’ll still have to get that from Villagers or loot. You can also put a
Book in the middle instead of an item, which gives you an
Enchanted Book to use on an
Anvil later.
Mage Armor and Upgrades
The mage armor in Ars Nouveau is made in the
Enchanting Apparatus too, by putting a piece of vanilla armor in the middle with four
Magebloom Fiber on the pedestals. There’s three sets, with Golden armor turning into the Sorceror’s set, Iron armor into the Arcanist’s set and
Diamond armor into the Battlemage’s set, and any enchantments on the armor are kept when it’s changed over.
After that, each piece of mage armor can be upgraded twice more using the Enchanting Apparatus. The first upgrade costs 2,500 Source with two
Blaze Rods on the pedestals, and the second one costs 5,000 Source with two
Ender Pearls and a
Chorus Fruit. Every upgrade gives the armor more slots for Threads, which are also made in the Enchanting Apparatus from a
Blank Thread.
Automating the Enchanting Apparatus
If you want to automate it, a
Hopper or a Starbuncle is able to put the main item into the
Enchanting Apparatus for you, and it’ll start crafting as soon as the item goes in, as long as the pedestals already have the right items on them. You can refill the Arcane Pedestals the same way too, as each one holds a single item and will accept items from a Hopper or a Starbuncle.
Getting the finished item back out is a little bit trickier, as the
Arcane Core is underneath the Enchanting Apparatus, so there’s no space to put a Hopper below it. The easiest way is to use a Starbuncle that’s linked to take from the Enchanting Apparatus and store into a
Chest, and the Starbuncle page explains how to link one up with the
Dominion Wand.
On the 1.20.1 version, the
Enchanting Apparatus only takes Source from one
Source Jar at a time, so the Source Jar has to hold the whole cost of the recipe by itself. The recipes, the 3 block pedestal range and the 10 block Source Jar range are the same on both versions.
Pretty much everything on this page needs Source Gems, and a lot of it needs Source as well. So if you haven’t got either of those going yet, the Source page covers the Sourcelinks and Source Jars, and the
Imbuement Chamber page goes through making Source Gems and the Essences.
Frequently Asked Questions
First you’ll need to place the
Enchanting Apparatus on top of an
Arcane Core, and put the ingredients onto
Arcane Pedestals within 3 blocks of it. Then right click it while holding the main item for the recipe, and if that recipe needs Source, you’ll also need a
Source Jar with enough Source in it within 10 blocks.
Usually it’s because the
Enchanting Apparatus isn’t sitting directly on an
Arcane Core, or one of the
Arcane Pedestals is more than 3 blocks away from it. For recipes that need Source, it also won’t start until a
Source Jar within 10 blocks has enough Source for the whole thing.
It can for a few of them, as the
Enchanting Apparatus is able to take Protection, Fire Protection and Projectile Protection up to level V, which is one higher than vanilla allows. You’ll still have to add the levels in order though, so the item needs level IV on it first.
Yes, they are, and that’s different from the
Imbuement Chamber, where the pedestal items are never used. A
Lava Bucket on an
Arcane Pedestal will still leave its empty
Bucket behind, and
Spell Parchment is the only item that stays on its pedestal afterwards.
