Sourcestone is a magical stone block from Ars Nouveau, and it’s needed for the
Enchanting Apparatus, the
Arcane Core and the
Arcane Pedestals. It’s also one of the main building blocks in the mod, with a lot of different patterns and a gilded version that has gold running through it.
Sourcestone doesn’t generate anywhere in the world, so it has to be crafted, although it only costs one
Source Gem for every eight blocks. Players usually end up making quite a lot of it, since it’s also used for building and for the frame of a Warp Portal.
How to Get Sourcestone
Sourcestone is crafted from eight
Stone placed around a
Source Gem in a
Crafting Table, and it makes eight Sourcestone at a time. Other natural stone like
Andesite,
Diorite and
Granite works in place of the Stone as well, but
Cobblestone doesn’t, so you’ll need to smelt it first.
The Source Gem comes from the
Imbuement Chamber, where an
Amethyst Shard or a piece of
Lapis Lazuli is turned into a Source Gem using Source from a nearby jar. It’s one of the first machines most players build, as Source Gems go into almost everything in the mod.
What Sourcestone Is Used For
Most of the
Sourcestone you make early on goes into the
Enchanting Apparatus, the
Arcane Core underneath it and the Arcane Pedestals around it. Each of them needs a different amount, along with some gold.
| Block | Sourcestone | Other items |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | 2 | |
| 6 | 2 Gold Ingots and a | |
| 4 | 4 Gold Nuggets and a Source Gem |
With all eight Arcane Pedestals, the whole setup takes 40 Sourcestone, which is five crafts, or five Source Gems. Each pedestal holds one item for a recipe, so you’re able to start with fewer and add more as you need them.
Sourcestone and all of its patterns are also able to be used as the frame of a Warp Portal, which is lit by throwing a written
Warp Scroll into it. Out of all the blocks that work for the frame, Sourcestone is the cheapest one to make in bulk.

Sourcestone Variants
Putting
Sourcestone in a
Stonecutter turns it into any of its decorative versions, one block for one. It comes in plain, smooth, gilded and smooth gilded styles, with the gilded ones having gold lines running through them.
| Style | Patterns |
|---|---|
| Plain, Alternating, Basketweave, Large Bricks, Mosaic, Small Bricks | |
| Plain, Alternating, Basketweave, Large Bricks, Mosaic, Small Bricks | |
| Gilded Sourcestone | Alternating, Basketweave, Large Bricks, Mosaic, Small Bricks |
| Smooth Gilded Sourcestone | Alternating, Basketweave, Large Bricks, Mosaic, Small Bricks |
Each pattern has stairs and slabs as well, from the Stonecutter or a normal crafting recipe. If you’d like plain Sourcestone back, putting any of the patterned blocks in a crafting grid on its own turns it back into one Sourcestone.
There are a couple of other blocks made from it as well. A
Sourcestone Grate is crafted from a Sourcestone with four
Iron Bars around it, and a
Sourcestone Sconce is made from two Sourcestone and a
Source Gem, which gives off light like a torch.
