The Bookwyrm is a small flying creature in Ars Nouveau, and it’s used with the
Storage Lectern, which is the storage system that comes with the mod. Every Bookwyrm you add to a Storage Lectern lets it connect to more chests, and while you’re using it, the Bookwyrms will fly back and forth between your chests carrying the items around.

You won’t find a Bookwyrm out in the world like you would with Starbuncles and Drygmys, because they can only be made with a ritual. So you’ll need a
Ritual Brazier and the
Ritual of Awakening before you’re able to get your first one, and for most players that ends up being a bit later on than the other creatures in Ars Nouveau.
Getting a Bookwyrm Charm
Bookwyrms come from a
Bookwyrm Charm, and the only way to get one is the
Ritual of Awakening with a
Book and Quill added to it. The ritual tablet is crafted from a
Flourishing Archwood Log, one of each Archwood Sapling and four
Source Gems, so you’ll need to have found all four colors of Archwood tree first.
The four saplings are the
Blazing Archwood Sapling, the
Cascading Archwood Sapling, the
Flourishing Archwood Sapling and the
Vexing Archwood Sapling. These all grow in the Archwood Forests, although some of the colors are a lot less common than others, so it can take a bit of exploring before you’ve got all of them.
The
Ritual Brazier is crafted from an
Arcane Pedestal, a
Source Gem Block and three
Gold Ingots. Once it’s placed, right click it with the Ritual of Awakening to put the ritual on it, and then right click it with a Book and Quill for each Bookwyrm you want, before starting the ritual with an empty hand.

Every Book and Quill you add gives you one Bookwyrm Charm, and they pop out of the Ritual Brazier one at a time, about a second apart. You’ll probably want to make a few at once, since most storage setups end up needing more than one Bookwyrm. You’ll also want to be careful not to start the ritual near an Archwood tree without a Book and Quill, as the same ritual will turn the tree into a Weald Walker instead.
The Storage Lectern
The
Storage Lectern is made in the
Enchanting Apparatus by putting a
Lectern in the middle and four
Chests on the pedestals around it. It works a lot like the storage systems in other mods, where all the chests connected to it show up in one screen, and you’re able to search, sort and take items out from all of them at once.
However, a Storage Lectern isn’t able to connect to any chests on its own, which catches a lot of people out. Each Bookwyrm that lives there lets it connect to 8 containers, so one Bookwyrm is enough for 8 chests, two is enough for 16, and so on. To add one, you’ll need to right click the Storage Lectern with a
Bookwyrm Charm, and the Bookwyrm will appear on top of it.

Chests are connected using the
Dominion Wand, by clicking the chest first and then the Storage Lectern, and they have to be within 30 blocks of it. Doing the same again unlinks the chest. Any container that was renamed in an
Anvil before you placed it also gets its own tab in the Storage Lectern, which is really handy for keeping ores, food and mob drops apart without searching every time.
For putting things away quickly, any container placed right next to the Storage Lectern gets emptied into your storage a stack at a time, so a
Chest or
Barrel beside it works as a dump chest for everything you bring back. Powering the Storage Lectern with redstone switches this off, if you’d rather keep a chest next to it as a normal one.
Bookwyrms at Work
While you’re using the
Storage Lectern, the Bookwyrms fly between the connected containers carrying the items you’ve moved, which makes it easy to see which chest something went into. They only do this when a player is within 40 blocks, and otherwise they just stay near the Storage Lectern, so they don’t need a pen or anything like that.
A Bookwyrm has 6 health, but only a player is able to hurt one, so they’re safe from mobs and anything else in your base. If the Storage Lectern is ever broken, the Bookwyrms that live there won’t last long, and they’ll each drop their
Bookwyrm Charm, so you won’t lose any of them. Casting Dispel on a Bookwyrm also turns it back into its charm.
You’re also able to dye a Bookwyrm by right clicking it with a dye. There’s six colors that work, which are purple, green, blue, black, red and white, so it’s possible to give each storage room its own color if you like.
Bookwyrm Familiar
A Bookwyrm can also be bound as a familiar with the
Ritual of Binding, and the Bookwyrm familiar works like an item magnet, as it picks up any dropped items and experience orbs within 5 blocks of you, although it ignores items you’ve thrown yourself. It’s recommended to use the familiar hotkey to turn the magnet on and off, as it can get in the way when you’re building.
This is one of the more useful familiars for day to day play, especially when mining or clearing a lot of blocks, since it saves you walking over to every item. It doesn’t do anything with the
Storage Lectern though, so you’ll still want separate Bookwyrms for that.
Frequently Asked Questions
You’ll need to perform the
Ritual of Awakening on a
Ritual Brazier with a
Book and Quill added to it. Each Book and Quill gives you one
Bookwyrm Charm, which is then used on a
Storage Lectern to add the Bookwyrm to it.
A
Storage Lectern needs at least one Bookwyrm to connect to anything, and each Bookwyrm only adds 8 containers. The chests also need to be within 30 blocks of the Storage Lectern, and linked with the
Dominion Wand by clicking the chest first.
Each Bookwyrm lets a
Storage Lectern connect to 8 containers, so you’ll need one more
Bookwyrm Charm for every 8 chests you want to add. There’s no limit on how many Bookwyrms a single Storage Lectern can have.
Only a player is able to hurt a Bookwyrm, but it will die if its
Storage Lectern is broken. When that happens it drops its
Bookwyrm Charm, so you can place it on another Storage Lectern afterwards.
