How Relics Work

Relics are rare items from the Relics mod that are found in Chests, and each one has its own abilities that get stronger as it's used. Using a Relic earns it Relic experience, and every level gives it an Upgrade Point, which is spent in the Relic screen along with your own experience points to raise an ability. Each stat is rolled when the Relic is found, which can be rerolled for experience points. On 1.21.1 a few Relics have constellations, which are research puzzles that need to be solved before an ability will work, and in the beta every ability has one. The beta also adds ranks, which raise the level cap on every ability.

Relics are rare items that are found in Chests, and each one has a few abilities of its own that get stronger the more it's used. You'll level a Relic up by using it, which gives you points to spend on its abilities, along with some of your own experience points.

1.20.1

There aren't any research puzzles on 1.20.1, as every ability will work as soon as the Relic has reached the level it needs. You'll still open the Relic screen to upgrade it, which is done by holding Left Shift over it in your inventory.

1.21.1

A few Relics on 1.21.1 have constellations, which are research puzzles that need to be solved before an ability is able to work. Abilities that unlock at a higher level will have a lock on them as well, which is opened by clicking on the ability five times.

beta
Beta Version

This is the Relics 0.12 beta for Minecraft 1.21.1, which was checked against version 0.12.8. It's still being worked on by the developer, and the numbers might change in a later build.

The beta has a different set of Relics to 1.21.1, with many of them being new and the rest reworked. Every ability in the beta has a constellation, and a Relic can be ranked up once it's maxed out, which raises the cap on all of its abilities.

Where to Find Relics

1.20.1

Relics can't be crafted or dropped by mobs on 1.20.1, as they're only found inside of Chests. Each Relic gets its own 2.5% roll in every Chest that it matches, which means a single Chest is able to hold more than one of them.

Which Chests a Relic can be in depends on the kind of structure on 1.20.1, like a Village, Shipwreck or Bastion Remnant, rather than the biome. The same kinds of structures from other mods are going to count too, but the Chests in Dungeons won't ever have a Relic.

1.21.1

Around one Chest in 3 will have a Relic inside on 1.21.1, and it's only ever going to be one. It's picked from every Relic that matches the Chest, which depends on the biome and dimension that it's in, along with the type of structure.

Chests from other mods are able to hold Relics on 1.21.1 as well, as only the names are checked. Each Relic's page has a table with its best places to look, like the Infinity Ham, which is most common in Plains and Savanna Villages.

beta

Only one Chest in 5 will have a Relic in the beta, which is picked by the biome, dimension and structure the same way as on 1.21.1. Every add-on that has Relics of its own will share that same pick, which is going to lower the chances of the base Relics a little.

How to Use Relics

Most Relics are worn in the Curios slots, which come from the Curios mod that Relics needs to run. The rest are kept in your inventory or held in your hand instead, and they're used from there, like the Magic Mirror on 1.20.1 and 1.21.1.

1.20.1 · 1.21.1

On 1.20.1 and 1.21.1 you'll get slots for the feet, back, belt, hands, necklace, ring and charm, with two of them for your feet and two for your hands. That lets you wear two boots or two gloves at the same time, like the Magma Walker with the Ice Skates.

beta

The beta adds a Head slot as well, which is used by the Chef's Hat and the Piglin Mask. Five of the beta Relics aren't worn at all, like the Shield of Retaliation and the Sphere of Self-Sacrifice, which have to be held in your hand to be used.

To see what a Relic does, hold Left Shift for a second while your cursor is over it in your inventory, which opens its Relic screen. This is where its level, experience and abilities are shown, and it's also where you'll upgrade and reroll them.

1.20.1 · 1.21.1

Abilities that you need to use yourself are picked from a list, which shows up while you're holding Left Alt. Scroll the mouse wheel to choose one and left-click to use it on 1.20.1 and 1.21.1, whereas the other abilities will work on their own.

beta

Holding Left Alt in the beta brings up a round menu of the abilities that you're able to use. Move your mouse over the one that you want and left-click to use it, with the scroll wheel turning to the next page when there are more than eight.

How to Level Up Relics

Relics gain Relic experience whenever their abilities are used, which is kept separate from your own experience. Every Relic earns it in a different way, like the Infinity Ham gaining it for each piece that's eaten, as the experience is tied to what the Relic does.

1.20.1

On 1.20.1, the way a Relic earns experience is written in the description at the top of its Relic screen. There isn't a separate list for it on 1.20.1, so each Relic page on this wiki covers what counts for that one as well.

1.21.1 · beta

On 1.21.1 and in the beta, the Relic screen has an Experience Sources tab that lists everything which counts. A source that belongs to an ability won't give any experience until that ability has been unlocked, along with being researched if it has a constellation.

The first level costs 100 Relic experience on nearly every Relic, and each one after that costs a set amount more than the last, which is usually 100 as well. A Relic with 10 levels is going to need 5,500 in total, and every level gives it one Upgrade Point.

1.20.1 · 1.21.1

Most Relics stop at level 10 on 1.20.1 and 1.21.1, with a few going up to 15 or 20, like the Rage Glove. A Relic won't store any more experience once it's maxed out, which is why the extra gets passed to your other Relics.

1.20.1
Experience Spreading

A quarter of the experience that a Relic earns will also be given to one other Relic that you're carrying, as long as it isn't at its maximum level. Once a Relic has been maxed out, all of the experience it earns gets passed on instead.

1.21.1
Experience Spreading

A quarter of the experience that a Relic earns will also be given to one other Relic that you're carrying, as long as it isn't at its maximum level. A Relic that's been maxed out won't earn any more experience, which means it has nothing to pass on.

beta

The maximum level in the beta comes from the abilities, as it's the total of each ability's level cap times the points that it costs. This means everything can be maxed out at every rank, and the cap goes up again after a rank up.

Relics don't share any of their experience with each other in the beta. You'll need the Experience Disperser for that, which is a Charm that gives your other equipped Relics a share of the experience whenever one of them earns some.

How to Upgrade Relics

1.20.1 · 1.21.1

Each Relic level gives you one Upgrade Point, which is spent in the Relic screen to raise an ability by one level. The screen calls them Leveling Points on 1.20.1 and 1.21.1, and you'll only earn as many as the Relic has levels, so not every ability can be maxed.

beta

Each Relic level gives you one Upgrade Point in the beta, which is spent in the Relic screen to raise an ability by one level. Some abilities cost more than one point a level, like the Charm slots on the belts, which is already worked into the Relic's maximum level.

1.20.1

Upgrading an ability will take Upgrade Points, along with some of your own experience points, which goes up with every level. Resetting one costs 50 experience points for each level that it had, and you'll be given all of its points back.

The experience point cost on 1.20.1 also depends on how many stats the ability has, at 15 for each one, times the level that it's going up to. That makes the first upgrade of a one-stat ability cost 15, whereas one with three stats will cost 45.

1.21.1

Upgrading an ability will take Upgrade Points, along with some of your own experience points, which starts at 50 and goes up by 50 each time. Resetting one costs 250 experience points for each level that it had, and you'll be given all of its points back.

beta

Ranks have been added on top of levels in the beta. Once a Relic has reached its maximum level, it's able to be ranked up, which raises the level cap on its abilities and unlocks the extra effects that are listed on them.

1.21.1 · beta

On 1.21.1 and in the beta, an ability that unlocks at a higher level has a lock on its card once that level is reached. It's opened by clicking on the card five times, which is free, and you'll need to solve its constellation after that if it has one.

Relic Quality & Rerolling

1.20.1

Each stat on a new Relic is rolled between a lowest and a highest value, which is shown by the stars under its portrait. If you aren't happy with them, an ability can be rerolled as many times as you'd like, with all of its stats being rolled again.

A reroll costs 100 experience points for an ability with one stat, and it gets cheaper for the ones that have more. You'll pay 50 for an ability with two stats, or 25 if it has four of them.

1.21.1

Each stat on a new Relic is rolled between a lowest and a highest value, which is shown by the stars under its portrait. An ability can be rerolled for 50 experience points, but the new roll might turn out worse than the one you had.

Whenever a reroll comes out worse, you'll gain some Luck, which makes better rolls more likely from then on. Every point of Luck adds 5 experience points to the cost of a reroll though, and you're able to hold Shift to keep rerolling until it's perfect.

beta

Each stat on a new Relic is rolled between a lowest and a highest value, and they're all rolled separately. An ability can be rerolled for 150 experience points, which will always give a different result, but it might be a worse one.

Quality is shown on each ability as stars out of 5, and the Relic's own quality is the average of all of its abilities. It doesn't do anything by itself, as it's only there to show how close the rolled stats are to the best ones.

Research and Constellations

1.20.1

There are no constellations on 1.20.1, as research there only means opening the Relic screen with Left Shift. The Researching Table is still in the game on 1.20.1, but it doesn't do anything, and every ability is ready to use once its level is reached.

1.21.1 · beta

An ability with a constellation won't work until it's been researched, which is done by clicking on its card in the Relic screen to open the puzzle. You'll see the constellation faintly in the background, and the stars have to be joined up until your links match it.

To link two stars, click on one and drag over to the other, and clicking on a link that's already there will remove it. A star won't take more links than it has in the solution, and the ability is researched as soon as every link is right.

If you're stuck, a hint can be bought for 50 experience points, which takes away one wrong link and adds a correct one. Holding Shift while you click it will finish the whole puzzle at once, but it costs 50 for every link in the solution, even the ones you've already placed.

1.21.1

The research screen is opened by holding Left Shift while your cursor is over the Relic in your inventory. It has to be in your own inventory for this to work, as it can't be researched from inside of a Chest.

Only five Relics have constellations on 1.21.1, which are the Holy Locket, Infinite Ham, Phantom Boot, Shadow Glaive and Springy Boot. The Infinity Ham page has the solutions for all three of its abilities, along with the hint cost for each one.

Research is saved on the Relic itself on 1.21.1, which means a second copy that you find is going to need its puzzles solved again. The Infinite Ham won't even regrow until its first constellation is done, as Regeneration has to be researched before it works.

beta

The research screen is opened by holding Left Shift while your cursor is over the Relic in your inventory. It has to be in your own inventory for this to work, as it can't be researched from inside of a Chest.

Every ability on every Relic has a constellation in the beta, and the solutions are shown on each Relic's page, like the Ring of the Seven Deadly Sins. A Relic won't do much of anything when it's first found, as its first ability still needs to be researched.

Research is saved to you as a player in the beta, instead of to the item. Once you've solved an ability, any other copy of that Relic that you pick up will already have it researched, which saves you from doing the puzzle twice.

beta

Ranks

Ranks are new in the beta, and a Relic can only be ranked up once it's at its maximum level. It's done with the rank up button in the Relic screen, and while it doesn't cost any experience points, the Relic's level, its points and every ability will go back to 0.

In return, each rank raises the level cap on every ability by a quarter, which takes most of them from 10 up to 35 at rank 5. Ranks are also able to unlock new effects on an ability, which are listed on its card along with the rank that they need.

The Cut Glass Boot and the Ring of the Seven Deadly Sins can't be ranked up at all, whereas the Midnight Mantle has seven ranks instead of five. Your stat rolls and research are kept when you rank up, as only the levels and points are reset.

Synergies

Synergies are bonuses in the beta that turn on when two Relics are being worn together. The Jellyfish Necklace is part of both of them, as its Electric Discharge ability gives the Kinetic Belt an Electric Arc and the Glitchy Mantle an Electric Rift.

Electric Arc leaves a trail of electric chains behind you while you're gliding with the Kinetic Belt, whereas Electric Rift stretches chains between the Glitchy Mantle's copies of you. Both Relics need to be in their Curios slots, and each synergy can be turned off in the Relic screen.

Relic Experience Bottle

The Relic Experience Bottle is thrown like a Bottle o' Enchanting, and it breaks into Relic experience orbs instead of normal ones. They'll fly to the nearest player within 16 blocks who has a Relic that isn't maxed out, and each orb gives its experience to one of those Relics at random.

A bottle is worth around 29 Relic experience, with a quarter of each orb going to a second Relic on top. It can be fired from a Dispenser as well, which means a stack of them is able to be emptied without throwing every one by hand.

1.20.1 · beta

There's no recipe for the Relic Experience Bottle, and it isn't found in any Chest, which means it can't be obtained in survival with only Relics installed. It's in the Relics creative tab on 1.20.1 and in the beta, and it can be given with the /give command.

1.21.1

There's no recipe for the Relic Experience Bottle, and it isn't found in any Chest, which means it can't be obtained in survival with only Relics installed. It isn't in the creative tab on 1.21.1 either, so the /give command is the only way to get one.

Add-ons

Add-ons are able to turn items from other mods into Relics, which level up, upgrade and get researched in the same way. Reliquified Artifacts does this for items like the Bunny Hoppers and Crystal Heart, and there are add-ons for Ars Nouveau, Twilight Forest and Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks too.

More Relics adds a whole set of new ones like the Slumbering Amulet, whereas Arcane Abilities has the Fate Beacon. There are smaller add-ons for L_Ender's Cataclysm, Alex's Mobs and Alex's Caves as well, like the Scouring Eye, and their Relics are found in Chests just like the base ones.

How do you get a Relic Experience Bottle?
›

It can't be crafted or found in Chests, so with only Relics installed it's a creative or /give item. It's in the creative tab on 1.20.1 and in the beta, whereas on 1.21.1 the /give command is the only way to get one.

What happened to the Researching Table?
›

It's still in the game on 1.20.1 and 1.21.1 as a block called Researching Table [Removed from the mod], but it doesn't do anything when it's placed. Research is done from the Relic screen instead, and the block isn't in the beta at all.
