Companions! is a comprehensive taming mod that adds over 10 unique creatures to Minecraft, each with their own abilities, transformations, and upgrade systems. Players can build an army of loyal companions ranging from spell-casting mages to mechanical golems, all while exploring new structures and defeating a powerful two-phase boss.
The mod features an essence-based progression system, nine magic spells, a Tesla-powered teleportation network, and multiple armor sets with unique bonuses. This guide covers everything players need to know about taming companions, upgrading them with special items, mastering the magic system, and conquering the Sacred Pontiff boss fight.
Getting Started
Before taming any companions, players must understand the Essence system and craft several essential items. Essence is the core resource that fuels the Soul Furnace, which transforms ordinary materials into their soul-like states for advanced crafting.
Essential Items
The Great Chalice is the first item players should craft. This copper vessel stores Essence dropped by hostile mobs and acts as fuel for the Soul Furnace. Small Essence has a chance to drop from any hostile mob, while Great Essence can be crafted from four Small Essence or obtained directly from Nether Stars. The chalice holds enough essence to power multiple Soul Furnace operations.

The Soul Furnace is crafted with six Copper Ingots, two Bricks, and one Furnace. Place a Great Chalice on top of the Soul Furnace, add Soul Essence, and it will transfer essence into it. Each soul orb at the bottom of the furnace interface provides enough energy to convert one item into its soul-like state. These transformed materials are required for most companion-related recipes.
Several intermediate materials are essential for progression. Soul Gems are created by placing Diamonds in the Soul Furnace and are used in crafting the Mage Staff and Respawn Totem. Crystallized Blood is made by cooking Rotten Flesh in the Soul Furnace and serves as fuel for shade altars and crafting for armor sets. The Filled Grail is created by filling an Empty Grail (crafted from three Copper Ingots) using a full Great Chalice.
The Coin Economy
Three types of coins serve as currency for trading with certain companions. Copper Coins are found in dungeon chests, Nether Coins spawn in Nether Fortresses, and End Coins appear in End Cities. These coins are used to tame the Hostile Imp and purchase magic books from Minions. Higher-tier coins provide better success rates and unlock more powerful rewards.
Build a mob farm near your base to collect Small Essence passively. Four Small Essence craft into one Great Essence, filling the chalice faster. Alternatively, a single Nether Star can craft 12 Great Essence for immediate use.
Cornelius
Cornelius Croak is a sophisticated frog companion that spawns naturally in Swamp biomes. Unlike other companions, Cornelius doesn’t engage in direct combat. Instead, he summons various frog entities to attack enemies and offers gambling games that can multiply coins or drain your wallet.

To tame Cornelius, players must bring him a Bee. Lure a Bee close to Cornelius and allow him to kill it. Once the Bee is defeated, Cornelius becomes tamed immediately. After taming, Cornelius will follow the player and can be commanded to sit, wander, or follow.
Combat Abilities
Cornelius attacks by summoning different frog entities depending on which coin type players give him. Each coin tier summons progressively stronger frog variants. Copper Coins summon basic frogs like the Bubble Frog and Ember Pole. Nether Coins summon tougher variants including the Nether Bullfrog and Firework Toad. End Coins summon the most powerful Ender Frog variant.
All summoning attacks have a cooldown of 3 to 13 seconds between summons. Cornelius must be given a coin before he will attack, making him a resource-dependent companion. Without coins, he will not assist in combat.
Gambling System
Right-clicking Cornelius opens his inventory, allowing players to deposit coins. Players can play Blackjack directly with Cornelius by giving him coins. Winning doubles the coin investment, but losing consumes the coins entirely. The Frog Bonanza is a craftable slot machine that works with Cornelius, offering another gambling option with varying payouts.

Cornelius’s gambling games use real coins that could otherwise be spent on taming Imps or purchasing magic books. Players should weigh the risk versus reward before committing valuable End Coins to gambling.
Golden Allay & Soul Mage
The Golden Allay is a flying creature that transforms into the powerful Soul Mage companion after being fed specific Mage equipment. The Soul Mage casts offensive and support spells drawn from a pool of nine magic books, making it one of the most versatile companions in the mod.

Golden Allays spawn naturally in Plains, Sunflower Plains, Savanna, and Badlands biomes. They spawn in dark areas and are relatively rare. Players should explore these biomes at night or underground to increase their chances of finding one.
The Transformation Process
Transforming the Golden Allay requires crafting three pieces of Mage equipment. The Mage Hat, Mage Coat, and Mage Staff must all be given to the Golden Allay in sequence. Mage Leggings exist but are not required for the transformation. Each piece uses Diamond armor as a base combined with Leather and Iron Ingots. The Mage Staff requires two Sticks and a Soul Gem.
Right-click the Golden Allay with the Mage Coat first. After a brief animation, right-click with the Mage Hat. Finally, provide the Mage Staff. The Golden Allay will glow and transform into a Soul Mage after an 80-tick animation that lasts 4 seconds.
Soul Mage Abilities
The Soul Mage casts magic spells with cooldowns ranging from 3.5 to 8 seconds. The Soul Mage can hold up to three magic books in its inventory, accessed by sneaking and right-clicking. Each book grants a specific spell that the Soul Mage will cast at enemies.

The nine available magic books are Ice Shard, Ice Tornado, Fire Mark, Brace, Heal Ring, Stone Spikes, Magic Ray, Black Hole, and Naginata. Most books are obtained by trading with tamed Minions using coins. The Ice Shard and Ice Tornado books require Copper Coins. Fire Mark and Brace require Nether Coins. Heal Ring and Stone Spikes require End Coins.
Magic Ray and Black Hole books are found in End City chests. The Naginata book is the only craftable magic book and requires four Relic Gold surrounding a Book.
Living Candle Shield
The Soul Mage can be protected by Living Candles. Cook a regular Candle in the Soul Furnace to create a Living Candle, which is a small mobile entity. Living Candles will follow the Soul Mage and absorb one lethal hit, functioning as a totem of undying specifically for the Soul Mage. Up to six Living Candles can protect a single Soul Mage at once.
Tamed Minions offer magic books with different success rates depending on the coin used. Copper Coins have a 25% chance, Nether Coins have 45%, and End Coins have 55%. Save higher-tier coins for better odds when purchasing expensive books.
Antlion
The Antlion is a unique companion that cycles through four distinct forms every in-game day. Each form has different stats, abilities, and combat roles. The Wild Antlion must first be tamed before it transforms into the companion version.
Taming the Wild Antlion
Wild Antlions spawn naturally in Desert biomes with 50 health and 7 damage. They are hostile and will burrow underground when they see players, emerging to attack from below. The key to taming is approaching from behind while the Antlion is on the surface.

Sneak up on the Wild Antlion from its rear side (not within its front 100-degree vision cone). Right-click it with Crystallized Blood. The taming has a 55% success rate. If successful, happy particles appear and the Wild Antlion transforms into a tamed Antlion companion. If it fails, angry particles spawn and the Antlion becomes aggressive.
The Four Forms
The Antlion automatically cycles to its next form at dawn each day unless phase-locked. Form 0 is the Base Antlion, which burrows underground and attacks enemies from below. It can be sheared to harvest 1 to 4 Antlion Fur, which regenerates after a complete cycle. This form has 60 health and 6 damage.
Form 1 is the Pupa, a defensive ball-shaped state with increased health but reduced offense and movement speed. This form excels at tanking damage. Form 2 is the Adult Antlion, a flying variant that can be ridden like a glider. It cannot gain altitude while being ridden but glides smoothly downward. Form 3 is the Soldier Antlion, which shoots sand projectiles at enemies and deals the highest damage of all four forms.

All forms share a movement speed of 0.55 and have cooldowns between 1 and 3 seconds for their various attacks. The specific health and damage values for forms 1 through 3 are stored in the mod’s config file.
Controlling Transformations
The Hourglass allows players to manually cycle the Antlion’s form without waiting for dawn. Crafted with six Copper Ingots, a Filled Grail, Sand, and Glass, the Hourglass must be at full durability to work. Right-clicking a tamed Antlion with the Hourglass advances it to the next form immediately.
Players can permanently lock the Antlion in its current form by giving it Netherite Chains. Craft Netherite Chains at a Smithing Table using a Netherite Ingot, Chain, and Netherite Upgrade Template. Right-click the Antlion with the chains to prevent all future transformations. This allows players to keep the Antlion in their preferred form forever.
Antlion Fur can only be sheared from Form 0 and only regenerates after the Antlion completes a full cycle through all four forms. Phase-locking the Antlion prevents fur regeneration.
Dynamo
The Dynamo is a mechanical companion that powers the Tesla network and can attack enemies with electrical shocks. Obtaining a Dynamo requires either defeating an Illager Tesla Golem during a raid or repairing a Broken Dynamo found in structures.

Broken Dynamos spawn in the Factory structure, which generates in Plains biomes. Alternatively, Illager Tesla Golems spawn during raids and have a chance to drop a Broken Dynamo when killed. The Broken Dynamo is a stationary entity with 50 health that must be repaired through a multi-step process.
Repairing the Broken Dynamo
The repair process requires specific items given in sequence. First, right-click the Broken Dynamo to see what it needs. It will request 10 to 40 Oak Planks (randomized amount). Right-click with the planks and confirm by clicking again. Next, provide one Homunculus, crafted with Leather, Soul Sand, Bone, Rotten Flesh, and a Filled Grail. The Dynamo will play a 40-tick animation.
After the animation, right-click with a Wrench (crafted from one Stick and three Iron Ingots). The Dynamo will request 10 to 40 Iron Ingots. Provide the Iron, confirm, then give it one Tesla Coil (crafted from one Plank and three Iron Ingots). Finally, right-click with the Wrench again. The Broken Dynamo transforms into a fully functional Dynamo companion after a brief animation.
Dynamo Abilities
The Dynamo attacks enemies by shocking them through an electrical coil. Players can toggle the Dynamo’s attack mode on or off by sneaking and right-clicking. When attack mode is disabled, the Dynamo sits in place and acts as a Tesla network node. When enabled, it actively pursues and attacks hostile mobs.

The Dynamo’s primary purpose is powering the Tesla network for teleportation platforms. Multiple Dynamos can be linked together using a Wrench to create extended Tesla networks. The Dynamo stores connection data and will not despawn while part of an active network.
Dynamos must be sitting (attack mode off) to function as Tesla nodes. Use the Wrench to link Dynamos to Tesla Coils, Recall Platforms, and other Tesla blocks. See the Tesla Network section for full teleportation setup instructions.
Minion
The Minion is a dimension-shifting companion that changes form based on its current dimension. Tamed from the Hostile Imp, the Minion offers magic books as rewards for gambling with coins and adapts its combat abilities depending on whether it’s in the Overworld, Nether, or End.
Taming the Hostile Imp
Hostile Imps spawn naturally in the Nether and can also be found guaranteed in the Tent structure, which generates in Nether Wastes between Y-levels 32 and 100. Hostile Imps are neutral by default but become hostile if taming fails or if they take damage. They have 35 health and 5 damage.

To tame a Hostile Imp, right-click it with a coin. Copper Coins have a 25% success rate, Nether Coins have 50%, and End Coins have 80%. On success, the Imp transforms into a Minion companion. On failure, the Imp spawns a halo projectile, becomes angry, and attacks the player for 15 seconds. Players can attempt taming again after the anger wears off.
Dimension Forms
The Minion automatically changes form when it enters a different dimension. In the Overworld, it appears as a flying Minion that casts Ice Tornado spells with cooldowns of 1 to 4 seconds. In the Nether, it transforms into an Imp that walks on the ground and casts Brace fireballs and Fire Mark explosions. In the End, it becomes a Gargoyle that casts Stone Spikes and Heal Ring spells.

Players can lock the Minion’s form by giving it Netherite Chains. Craft these at a Smithing Table using a Netherite Ingot, Chain, and Netherite Upgrade Template. Right-click the Minion with the chains to permanently prevent dimension-based transformations. This allows players to keep their preferred form regardless of dimension.
Trading for Magic Books
Tamed Minions can trade magic books for coins. The coin type and dimension determine which books are available. In the Overworld with Copper Coins, Minions offer Ice Shard or Ice Tornado books with a 25% success rate per coin. In the Nether with Nether Coins, they offer Fire Mark or Brace books with 45% success. In the End with End Coins, they offer Heal Ring or Stone Spikes books with 55% success.
Lock the Minion’s form in the dimension whose spells you prefer. Flying Minions (Overworld) have better mobility, while Gargoyles (End) provide healing support. Lock the form before entering other dimensions to maintain your preferred abilities.
Puppet
The Puppet is a customizable companion that equips two arm attachments for combat. Each arm type grants different attacks, allowing players to mix and match abilities. Obtaining a Puppet requires winning a rock-paper-scissors game against the Magic Glove found in the Witch House structure.

The Witch House structure spawns in Swamp biomes. It’s an upgraded version of the vanilla Witch Hut with a distinctive appearance. Inside, players will find the Magic Glove sweeping the floor. The Magic Glove has 160 health and 5 damage but only attacks if players lose rock-paper-scissors rounds.
Playing Rock-Paper-Scissors
Face the Magic Glove within a 45-degree cone to start the game. Players must have Cobblestone (Rock), Paper, and Shears (Scissors) in their inventory. Right-click the glove with one of these items to make your move. The glove randomly chooses rock, paper, or scissors.

Players must win three rounds total to tame the glove. Draws reset the current round. Losing a round causes the glove to attack after a 20-tick delay, dealing damage if the player is within 4 blocks. The game automatically times out after 600 ticks if no move is made. After three wins, the Magic Glove transforms into a Puppet Glove after a 64-tick animation.
Creating the Full Puppet
The Puppet Glove must be given an Empty Puppet to become fully functional. The Empty Puppet is crafted with two Planks, three Sticks, one Homunculus, and Leather Boots. Right-click the Puppet Glove with the Empty Puppet to merge them into a complete Puppet companion.
The Puppet has two arm slots accessed by sneaking and right-clicking. Four arm types exist: Cannon Arm (ranged projectile), Blade Arm (melee slashes), Whip Arm (mid-range whip attacks), and Mutant Arm (special teleport ability). Each arm can be equipped independently on the left and right sides.
The Mutant Arm grants a unique teleport ability. If the Puppet takes more than 4 damage from a single hit, it instantly teleports behind its attacker. This makes Mutant Arms excellent for survivability. Both arms attack with cooldowns between 0.5 and 2.5 seconds and can fire simultaneously for maximum damage output.
Equipping two Mutant Arms provides constant teleport protection. Alternatively, mix Cannon Arms for ranged damage with Blade Arms for melee backup. Experiment with different combinations to match your playstyle.
Teddy
Teddy is a voodoo teddy bear companion that can mutate into a powerful flying form. Found in the Teddy Prison structure, Teddy applies the Voodoo effect to enemies and can be transformed using an Eternal Lighter.
The Teddy Prison structure spawns in Dark Forest biomes. It’s a tower-like building with Teddy sitting at the top. Teddy is peaceful and will not attack unless players attempt to tame him with the wrong item.

Craft a Needle from three Iron Ingots arranged diagonally. Right-click Teddy with the Needle to tame him instantly with 100% success rate. Once tamed, Teddy attacks enemies by firing needles and applying the Voodoo effect, which summons additional needles around the target.
Mutating Into Mutated Teddy
Craft an Eternal Lighter with three Netherrack and one Netherite Dagger. The Netherite Dagger itself requires one Netherite Ingot and one Copper Ingot. The Eternal Lighter functions as flint and steel but creates blue-pink eternal flames that never extinguish.

Right-click tamed Teddy with the Eternal Lighter to begin the mutation. After a 200-tick animation lasting 10 seconds, Teddy transforms into Mutated Teddy. This flying form has increased health and damage values stored in the config. Mutated Teddy shoots needles while airborne and teleports behind attackers if it takes more than 4 damage in a single hit.
Harvesting Mutant Flesh
Mutated Teddy can be harvested for Mutant Flesh by right-clicking it with a Milk Bucket. This yields 1 to 2 Mutant Flesh and converts the Milk Bucket into an empty Bucket. Mutant Flesh is required for crafting the Crystallized Blood Scythe. Mutated Teddy remains tamed and functional after harvesting.
Mutated Teddy has no fall damage, flies freely, and applies Glowing to its owner within 16 blocks. It attacks with cooldowns of 0 to 0.75 seconds, making it one of the fastest-attacking companions. The teleport ability triggers when taking 4 or more damage.
Croissant Dragon
The Croissant Dragon is a food-themed dragon companion that can be summoned from an egg. It provides buffs to players who eat it and can be equipped with flavor-based armor sets that grant different status effects.
Summoning the Croissant Dragon
Craft Big Bread by surrounding a Homunculus with eight Bread in a crafting table. Place the Big Bread in a Soul Furnace to cook it into a Croissant Egg. The egg pops out as a placeable block. Place the Croissant Egg on the ground and wait for it to hatch.
Once hatched, the baby Croissant Dragon requires three Milk Buckets to grow to full size and become tamed. Right-click it with a Milk Bucket three times. Each bucket contributes to its growth. After the third bucket, the dragon reaches adulthood and is permanently tamed.
Eating the Dragon
Players can sneak and right-click the Croissant Dragon to eat it, consuming up to two bites. The dragon recovers over time through a 10-tick animation followed by a 100 to 310 tick delay. When eaten, the dragon walks instead of flying. When fully recovered, it resumes flying.

The buffs granted depend on which armor flavor the dragon wears. Chocolate Armor grants Speed I for 10 seconds per bite. Strawberry Armor grants Glowing II for 9 seconds. Vanilla Armor grants Regeneration I for 30 seconds. Without armor, eating provides no buffs.
Flavor Armor
Three armor flavors exist: Chocolate, Vanilla, and Strawberry. Each is crafted with similar recipes using food items. Right-click the Croissant Dragon with the desired armor to equip it. The armor changes the dragon’s color and determines which buff is granted when eaten. Armor cannot be removed once equipped but can be replaced with different flavors.
The Croissant Dragon has 5 damage. It attacks by releasing cream particle trails but doesn’t deal significant combat damage. Its primary purpose is providing buffs through the eating mechanic rather than fighting alongside the player.
Vanilla Armor’s 30-second Regeneration is the most valuable for survival. Chocolate Armor’s Speed is useful for exploration. Strawberry Armor’s Glowing helps in dark areas. Choose based on your current needs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Small Essence drops randomly from hostile mobs. Four Small Essence craft into one Great Essence. Alternatively, one Nether Star crafts 12 Great Essence. Fill a Great Chalice with essence, then place it on top of a Soul Furnace to transfer the fuel.
Yes, players can tame and maintain multiple companions simultaneously. There is no limit to the number of companions you can have. Each companion type can be tamed multiple times by finding more wild versions or summoning additional copies through their respective methods.
Companions do not respawn naturally. However, placing and activating a Respawn Totem allows nearby companions to respawn with limited charges. Each respawn consumes one charge from the totem. Once charges run out, companions will permanently die unless another Respawn Totem is activated.
Mutated Teddy has the fastest attack speed at 0 to 0.75 seconds per attack and can teleport when damaged. Mankh provides consistent fire damage with rapid attacks. Soul Mages offer versatile magic damage if equipped with offensive spell books. The best companion depends on whether you need single-target damage, area control, or support abilities.
Place a sitting Dynamo near one Recall Platform. Use a Wrench to connect the Dynamo to the platform. If the second platform is too far, use Tesla Coils as relays between the Dynamo and platform. Once both platforms are connected to the same Tesla network, use the Wrench to link one platform to the other.
Magic books can be used by both players and Soul Mages. Players right-click with the book equipped to cast spells. Soul Mages automatically cast spells from books placed in their inventory. The Mage armor set reduces cooldowns for player-cast spells.
Copper Coins spawn in dungeon chests throughout the Overworld. Nether Coins are found in Nether Fortress chests. End Coins appear in End City chests. Coins can also be won through gambling with Cornelius, though this risks losing coins entirely.
The Sacred Pontiff can only be fought once per Monkey Temple structure. To fight the boss multiple times, players must locate additional Monkey Temple structures in different Jungle biomes. Each temple spawns one Sacred Pontiff that can be awakened and defeated.
