Umvuthi, the Sunbird is a stationary boss mob found at the heart of every Umvuthana Grove in Savanna biomes. He sits enthroned and immovable, commanding a flock of devoted Umvuthana followers who will defend him with their lives.
Approaching without a mask will make him hostile immediately, but players who earn his favour can trade for the Sun’s
Blessing, a powerful ability set that lets you command solar energy.
Umvuthi has 150 HP (75 hearts), 1 point of armor, and is completely immune to knockback. He does not chase you: every attack in his arsenal is a ranged or area-of-effect strike, and his second phase at 60% HP adds two devastating abilities that can wipe out an unprepared player.
Spawning
Umvuthi spawns inside his throne structure within Umvuthana Groves, which generate in Savanna biomes. Each grove is home to exactly one Umvuthi, along with a population of Umvuthana followers that patrol and protect the settlement.

Groves generate between Y 50 and Y 100, spaced at least 25 chunks apart, and will not appear near Villages or Pillager Outposts. You can use the /locate command to find the nearest Umvuthana Grove once you know its structure name. Umvuthi cannot be lured away from his throne and cannot move horizontally.
Behavior
In his neutral state, Umvuthi sits on his throne, occasionally performing a belly drum animation and issuing a deep roar. He heals 0.3 HP per tick while out of combat, so he will be at full health if you leave and return. He also resets to full health if a nearby player respawns, preventing respawn-camping strategies.

Umvuthi attacks any player not wearing an Umvuthana Mask in their helmet slot. He also attacks Iron Golems, Zombies, Skeletons, and Elokosa on sight. Players wearing any Umvuthana Mask, including the
Sol Visage, are ignored unless they misbehave during the trading process.
Phase 1 (150 to 90 HP)
Sunstrike, Solar Flare, Summon Followers, Sunblock Cranes
Umvuthi uses four abilities throughout the fight, with two more unlocking in his second phase.
His primary attack is the Sunstrike: a column of solar fire called down from the sky at your predicted position, tracking your current movement. It deals 2 fire damage and 2 magic damage on impact, with a cooldown of 2.5 seconds at full health that shortens to 1.5 seconds once he has taken 60% of his total health.

Solar Flare activates when you step within 4 blocks of Umvuthi, or within 6 blocks while moving toward him. It is an instant 4-block radius burst centered on him, dealing damage and launching everything nearby away with strong knockback.
Umvuthi also summons Umvuthana Minions periodically, especially when his target is at distance or when his Sunblock shield is active. Up to 4 Umvuthana can be active near him at a time, attacking his current target and buying him time to land Sunstrikes.
Sunblock Shield
Every time Umvuthi loses a total of 45 HP since his last Sunblock event, he summons up to 3 Umvuthana Cranes. These Cranes continuously apply the Sunblock effect to Umvuthi and heal him for 0.15 HP per second.
While Sunblock is active, all non-projectile damage to Umvuthi is completely blocked, producing a metallic clang sound. Only arrows, thrown items, and other projectiles can damage him during this phase.

The Cranes are the priority target whenever they appear. They wear the Mask of
Faith, move around the arena, and will teleport to avoid danger. Once all Cranes are killed, Sunblock expires and normal melee or magic damage resumes. Ignoring them and attacking Umvuthi accomplishes nothing while Sunblock is active.
While Umvuthi has the Sunblock effect, melee attacks, explosions, and magic damage are all completely nullified. Switch to a Bow, Crossbow, or other projectile immediately when Cranes appear and focus them down before resuming your main attack rotation.
Phase 2 (90 HP and below)
All Phase 1 abilities plus Solar Beam and Supernova
Once Umvuthi drops to 90 HP or below (60% of his total health), two new abilities become available. Solar Beam is a sustained 30-block ray that fires from his hands and tracks your position.
It deals 1 fire damage and 1.5 magic damage per hit, continuously applied for roughly 3.5 seconds while the beam is active. This ability has roughly an 11.5-second cooldown and requires you to be within 30 blocks and in his line of sight.

Supernova is his deadliest attack. It begins with a 1.5-second pull phase dragging everything within 16 blocks toward him, followed by an explosion dealing 4 fire damage and 4 magic damage and setting targets on fire for 5 seconds. Supernova triggers when you are within 10.5 blocks and Sunblock is not active, with an 11.5-second cooldown.
The Sun’s Blessing Trade
Umvuthi is also a merchant. Any player wearing an Umvuthana Mask can right-click him while he has no active combat target to open a trade interface. Trading 7 Gold Blocks grants the Grant Sun’s
Blessing, a special item that bestows the Sun’s Blessing effect for 60 minutes.
After the initial trade, you can return to Umvuthi to replenish your blessing for free. Sun’s Blessing grants access to four abilities that mirror Umvuthi’s own arsenal. Sunstrike lets you right-click the ground with an empty hand to call a solar strike, while Solar Flare knocks enemies away on a sneak-left-click.
Solar Beam fires a sustained beam on sneak-right-click at the cost of 5 minutes of your blessing, and Supernova detonates a massive explosion on sneak-left-right-click, consuming the entire remaining blessing. See the Sun’s Blessing article for full details on player ability use.
Drops
The
Sol Visage drops with 100% chance only when killed by a player. It is a unique helmet made from Gold armor material but indestructible by default, and wearing it grants Umvuthana Mask status, causing Umvuthi, all Umvuthana, and Piglins to treat you as neutral.

While wearing the Sol Visage, right-clicking while holding another Umvuthana Mask summons that mask’s linked minion, and right-clicking a summoned minion returns it. Feathers drop in quantities of 0 to 4. Each level of Looting adds 0 to 2 additional feathers to the roll.
Tips
Wear an Umvuthana Mask before approaching the grove if you only want to trade. Umvuthi will not become hostile, you can negotiate safely, and the surrounding Umvuthana will not attack either. Remove the mask only when you are ready to start the boss fight.
Keep moving during the Sunstrike phase. Umvuthi leads your position based on your current velocity when he fires, so stopping briefly before the strike lands and then moving immediately after can cause strikes to miss. Standing still is the worst thing you can do.
A common approach is to place an overhead roof one or two blocks above your head before engaging. Sunstrikes fall vertically and are blocked by solid blocks above you, and Solar Beam requires line of sight, so overhead cover neutralizes both primary ranged threats.
In Phase 2, respect the Supernova range. If you are within 10 blocks when Supernova starts, sprint away immediately during the pull phase. The pull lasts about 1.5 seconds, so sprinting outward immediately can carry you clear before detonation.
When Cranes spawn, always switch to a ranged weapon. Use a Bow with Power enchantment. The Cranes avoid players and will teleport, so do not waste time chasing them with a Sword. They also have a Mask of
Faith, meaning they carry bonus health, so pack enough arrows.
Solar Beam tracks your position during its active window. Sprinting perpendicular to Umvuthi’s facing direction, or using a pillar or wall to break line of sight, will terminate the beam early. The beam has a 30-block maximum range, so staying beyond 30 blocks prevents it from reaching you, though this also makes Solar Flare and Supernova irrelevant.
Bring a ranged option regardless of your preferred playstyle. The Sunblock shield makes melee completely useless for extended stretches of the fight, and any fight without a bow becomes a waiting game where Umvuthi is also healing from his Cranes.
If gathering 7 Gold Blocks for the Sun’s
Blessing trade is slow going, the Nether is the most efficient source.
gold ore generates in large quantities there and does not require a Fortune pickaxe to maximise yield. Smelting
raw gold from a Nether mining session is typically much faster than finding enough veins in overworld caves. Plan the trade before you fight: each grove has only one Umvuthi, and the free refill is lost once he is dead.
FAQ
No. Umvuthi targets all players not wearing an Umvuthana Mask. Once you remove your mask or deal damage to him, he immediately becomes hostile and begins using his full attack rotation. There is no way to damage him from outside his 40-block follow range without triggering a response, as Sunstrike reaches any target he can perceive.
Sunblock is a status effect applied to Umvuthi by Umvuthana Cranes that negates all non-projectile damage. Melee attacks, explosions, and magic damage are all blocked. Only projectiles such as arrows can damage him while the effect is active. Kill the Cranes to remove it.
By default, no. The
Sol Visage is indestructible and never breaks. Server administrators can change this via the mod’s config file if desired, but in the default configuration the item has no durability and no repair requirements.
Yes. After the initial trade of 7 Gold Blocks, you can return to Umvuthi at any time to replenish your Sun’s
Blessing for free. He tracks which players have already traded with him and offers a replenish option rather than requiring another payment.
You receive the Sol Visage from his loot, but you lose the opportunity to earn Sun’s Blessing through trade. The Sol Visage still functions as an Umvuthana Mask and grants its minion-summoning ability, but the Sun’s Blessing abilities (Sunstrike, Solar Flare, Solar Beam, Supernova) are only available through the trade. Each grove only contains one Umvuthi, so if there are no other groves nearby, consider trading first.
No. Umvuthi does not naturally respawn once killed. His throne structure remains in the world but he will not return unless spawned again manually using an
Umvuthi Spawn Egg or commands.
No. Despite his solar-themed abilities, Umvuthi’s attack rotation and damage output do not change based on time of day or weather conditions. It is a natural assumption to test given that his attacks are named after the sun, but the fight plays out identically at midnight as it does at noon.
