Frostmaw is a massive, bear-like ice boss that lurks dormant in snowy biomes, half-buried in snow and appearing almost like a natural feature of the landscape. Defeating it is the only way to obtain the
Ice Crystal, which lets you channel Frostmaw’s own icy breath as a weapon.
Getting there requires navigating freezing ranged attacks, an evasive dodge response, and a devastating slam once you push the fight far enough. You can also attempt to steal the crystal without fighting at all, though Frostmaw will wake up furious the moment you do.
Spawning
Frostmaw generates in open snowy biomes, specifically excluding snowy oceans, rivers, beaches, snowy forests, and snowy taiga. This leaves biomes like Snowy Plains, Ice Spikes, Snowy Slopes, Frozen Peaks, and Jagged Peaks as likely homes.

The boss spawns at the surface, and the game keeps at least 8 chunks between placements, so encounters are spaced well apart. Frostmaw will not generate near villages. Only one Frostmaw can exist within a 100-block radius. If you find a lair, the Frostmaw inside will be there alone. You can locate the structure with commands.
Behavior
Dormant State
Frostmaw begins every encounter dormant and motionless, resting in its lair with an
Ice Crystal embedded visibly in its body. While asleep, it slowly regenerates health at a steady rate, so do not waste time before engaging. If you respawn nearby after dying, Frostmaw’s health resets to full, preventing you from whittling it down over multiple deaths.

When a player comes within 8 blocks, Frostmaw wakes with a roar and a camera-shaking crash. Shooting it with
Arrows while it sleeps also wakes it up, though arrows deal no damage to Frostmaw under any circumstances. If Frostmaw loses its target and is left alone for about 60 seconds, it returns to sleep.
Attacks
Frostmaw fights in two distinct phases. During the first, it uses swipes and ice attacks freely. Once its health falls below 60% (150 HP), it gains access to a devastating Slam that changes how you need to play the fight.
Standard Phase
Full health to 150 HP: Swipes, Ice Breath, Ice Ball, and Roar
At close range, Frostmaw swipes with its claws in a 135-degree arc reaching about 6.5 blocks, dealing 10 damage per hit. It alternates between a single heavy swipe with strong knockback and a double swipe that hits twice. The second hit of the double swipe punishes blocking: if your shield is raised when it connects, your guard is broken. Both swipes leave a trail of ice particle effects when Frostmaw has its crystal.

When you are within about 13 blocks and Frostmaw has its crystal, it fires Ice Breath: a sustained cone of freezing wind that reaches 10 blocks in a narrow 45-degree arc. It deals 1 damage per tick for roughly 3 seconds, and each hit builds your freeze meter. A full meter inflicts Frozen, preventing all actions for about 2.5 seconds. Fire damage removes Frozen early, and Ice Breath also converts exposed water surfaces to ice as it passes.
At longer ranges (beyond about 14 blocks), Frostmaw charges and launches an Ice Ball that leads your movement, aiming where you will be rather than where you are. It deals 3 damage on contact and instantly fills your freeze meter, freezing you in place with one hit. Moving unpredictably just before the shot fires is the best way to avoid it. Ice Ball has a roughly 10-second cooldown, Ice Breath about 13 seconds.

Frostmaw roars periodically during battle, sending a shockwave that pushes nearby players back based on how close they are. The roar also happens on wake-up and creates a brief window where Frostmaw is not attacking. The shockwave only pushes players while Frostmaw still has its crystal.
Below 60% HP
150 HP and under — Slam is added to the attack set
Once Frostmaw drops below 150 HP, it begins using Slam: a slow, telegraphed move where it rears up and crashes its body down in front of itself. The impact deals 40 damage in roughly a 3-block radius, enough to kill an unarmored player outright.

The hit area is in front of Frostmaw, not directly under it, so moving behind it or to its sides avoids the attack. Slam has a long cooldown of about 25 seconds and only fires at a 25% chance per attempt, so it does not spam, but always respect the windup animation.
After taking sustained damage, Frostmaw sidesteps away when you close to within 4 blocks, immediately following with Ice Breath if it still has its crystal. This creates a loop where staying close forces a dodge and the dodge leads directly into a freeze attack. If you can apply the Frozen effect to Frostmaw using the Ice Crystal, its dodge is suppressed entirely.
Arrows deal absolutely no damage to Frostmaw regardless of enchantments or bow power. Crossbows and spectral arrows are equally useless. Use melee weapons, tridents, or splash potions instead. Frostmaw does take 25% extra damage from fire, making Fire Aspect and fire damage sources worth considering.
Stealing the Ice Crystal
While Frostmaw sleeps, there is a window to steal its Ice Crystal without killing it. Approach quietly and get within about 1.8 blocks of the crystal embedded in its body while sneaking or sprinting.
Make sure your inventory has at least one free slot, or the steal will not trigger. If successful, the Ice Crystal drops into your inventory and Frostmaw wakes immediately, beginning its roar animation in an agitated state.

Without its crystal, Frostmaw loses Ice Breath, Ice Ball, and the roar knockback entirely, relying only on melee swipes and Slam once below 60% HP. If you kill Frostmaw without the crystal, it does not drop the Ice Crystal. The only way to get the Music Disc (Petiole) is to kill a crystal-less Frostmaw while it is raining.
Drops
The Ice Crystal only drops when you kill Frostmaw while it still has its crystal. It lets you channel Ice Breath directly, freezing enemies and turning water to ice. See the Ice Crystal article for the full details on how to use it.
The Music Disc (Petiole) is a conditional secret drop. It only appears if you kill Frostmaw without its crystal and it is currently raining in the world. This makes it the reward for stealing the crystal before the fight and returning on a rainy day, or keeping the crystal stolen and fighting in rain. Both drops require a player kill and are always guaranteed if the conditions are met.
Tips
Bring a strong sword rather than a bow. Frostmaw has no armor, so weapon damage and enchantments like Sharpness translate directly into faster kills. Fire Aspect and Flame enchantments are especially effective, dealing an extra 25% damage on fire hits. Keep your inventory free before approaching a sleeping Frostmaw if you want to steal the crystal.
Strafe constantly during Ice Ball wind-ups. The projectile predicts your movement path at the moment it fires, so changing direction just as it launches causes it to miss. Standing still or moving in a straight line will always result in a hit. During Ice Breath, step out of its narrow 45-degree firing cone rather than trying to tank through it.
Use the terrain around you. Trees, rock outcroppings, and other solid obstacles break line of sight for Ice Breath, stopping the cone before it can sustain long enough to fill your freeze meter. Fighting in a snowy biome with natural cover nearby, rather than a completely flat plain, gives you something to duck behind when Ice Breath fires.
Do not fight in a straight line with your back against a wall. The roar knockback and Slam both benefit from the player having nowhere to go. A large open area gives you room to circle around to Frostmaw’s sides, where Slam does not reach and swipe arcs are narrower. Getting behind Frostmaw is the safest position during the low-health phase.
Stock up on consumables before engaging. Golden apples are worth carrying for emergency bursts of healing, since Frostmaw’s burst damage during the low-health phase can easily outpace normal food. Keeping a Totem of Undying in your off-hand is also a strong safety net, since a single Slam hit at close range can kill at lower health totals.
Frostmaw’s health resets when a nearby player respawns. Do not attempt to wear it down over multiple deaths from a respawn point close to the lair. Set your spawn far away from the lair, or treat each attempt as a single run where death means starting over.
FAQ
Frostmaw is fully immune to all projectile arrows. This includes regular arrows, spectral arrows, tipped arrows, and Power-enchanted bows. The code returns no damage for all arrow hits regardless of how they are fired. You must use melee, tridents, splash effects, or fire damage to deal damage.
The Ice Crystal only drops if Frostmaw still has its crystal when it dies. If you or another player stole the crystal before the kill, Frostmaw will not drop it. You need to kill it before anyone takes the crystal, or use the steal mechanic intentionally if you want the Music Disc instead.
Steal the Ice Crystal from Frostmaw while it sleeps, then kill it during rain. Both conditions must be true at the same time: the crystal must be gone from its body, and the weather must be raining when the killing blow lands. The disc is a guaranteed drop when both are met.
Yes. Using the Ice Crystal you obtained from Frostmaw, you can channel Ice Breath at Frostmaw to build its freeze meter. Once frozen, Frostmaw’s dodge ability is suppressed entirely, which prevents the dodge-then-ice-breath combo it uses when you deal sustained melee damage. This makes it easier to land consistent hits.
This is intentional. Frostmaw resets its health when a player respawns nearby, which prevents grinding it down over multiple quick deaths. To avoid this, set your respawn point further away from the lair, or be prepared to win the fight in a single attempt.
Frostmaw spawns in open snowy biomes. It avoids all snowy variants of ocean, river, beach, forest, and taiga, so it is most common in Snowy Plains, Ice Spikes, Snowy Slopes, Frozen Peaks, and Jagged Peaks. It will not generate near villages.
