The
Ice Crystal is a powerful ability item obtained from the Frostmaw, a colossal ice boss that sleeps in open snowy biomes. Holding it and right-clicking channels an icy whirlwind that reaches up to 10 blocks in front of you, dealing continuous damage and building toward a full freeze on every target it touches.
Frozen enemies cannot move or act for about 2.5 seconds, making the Ice Crystal one of the strongest crowd-control tools in Mowzie’s Mobs. The crystal never permanently breaks by default and recharges passively in your inventory between uses.
Obtaining
Two methods exist for getting an
Ice Crystal: steal it from a sleeping Frostmaw before the fight begins, or kill one that is still carrying it. If the crystal has already been stolen before you kill the Frostmaw, it will not drop on death. The Frostmaw article covers the full boss encounter in detail.
Steal from a Sleeping Frostmaw
Move within about 2 blocks of the crystal visible on the Frostmaw’s back while sneaking or sprinting. The crystal transfers to your inventory automatically.
The steal only works while the Frostmaw is completely dormant and plays no active animation. You must have at least one open inventory slot for the transfer to occur. Successfully stealing earns the Big Brain™ Time advancement.

The moment you take the Ice Crystal, the Frostmaw plays its wake-up roar and becomes hostile. Without the crystal it cannot use Ice Breath or Ice Ball, but its melee swipes are still deadly. Have room to back away before you grab it.
Kill the Frostmaw
If the Frostmaw dies while still carrying its crystal, the Ice Crystal drops with 100% chance when killed by a player.
This method requires winning the full boss fight, but the drop is guaranteed as long as the crystal was never stolen. If the Frostmaw dies without its crystal during rain, it drops a
Music Disc instead of the Ice Crystal.
Usage
Channeling Ice Breath
Hold right-click with the
Ice Crystal to channel the icy whirlwind. After a brief startup, it hits all entities within 10 blocks in a 45-degree cone ahead of you, dealing 1 damage per hit. Releasing right-click ends the ability, and the beam also converts exposed water surfaces into Ice.

Each hit builds Freeze progress on the target. Roughly 5 sustained hits fills the meter and applies the Frozen effect, locking the target in place for about 2.5 seconds and preventing all actions.
Fire damage breaks Frozen early, so avoid channeling near fire or lava. Freeze progress decays quickly between hits, so keep the beam focused on one enemy rather than sweeping across several.
Durability and Recharge
The Ice Crystal drains 5 durability each time you activate it, against a maximum of 600. By default it never breaks, stopping when depleted and recharging passively in your inventory.
If your server enables the breakable config setting, the item will wear out and disappear instead of recovering. You can check which mode applies by reading the item tooltip: a default crystal shows “Recharges while in inventory,” a breakable one does not.
Tips
Steal the crystal before engaging the Frostmaw. A Frostmaw without its crystal loses both ranged attacks, Ice Breath and Ice Ball, reducing the encounter to melee only. After stealing, consider finishing the fight from range since the Frostmaw’s remaining attacks are only melee.

Target one enemy at a time. Freeze progress builds per-target and decays fast if you lose contact. Focus the whirlwind on one target until it locks down, then move to the next. Use trees and terrain to break line of sight if you wake the Frostmaw without its crystal or get caught in a bad position during the fight.
Ice Breath travels in a straight line and large obstacles like trees can block the beam entirely, giving you time to reposition or wait out a freeze without taking damage. You can use the
Ice Crystal against the Frostmaw itself during the fight. The beam accumulates Freeze progress the same as any other mob, and reaching a full freeze disables the Frostmaw’s AI entirely for 2.5 seconds, stopping all movement and attacks.
FAQ
Frostmaws spawn in snowy biomes between roughly Y 50 and Y 100. They avoid ocean, river, beach, forest, and taiga variants, so you are most likely to find them in open areas like Snowy Plains, Ice Spikes, Snowy Slopes, and Frozen Peaks.
Yes, the Frostmaw builds Freeze progress from the beam the same as any other mob. Sustaining the beam for roughly 5 hits applies the Frozen effect, disabling its AI for about 2.5 seconds and stopping all movement and attacks.
The channeling ability ends immediately and the crystal stays in your inventory. It begins recharging right away. Switch to another weapon while you wait and return to the crystal once the charge is restored.
No, once you steal the crystal, the Frostmaw no longer has one. Killing it afterward will not produce a second
Ice Crystal. If you kill it without the crystal during rain, it drops a
Music Disc instead.
No, the Ice Crystal cannot be enchanted or repaired in an
anvil. It recharges automatically in your inventory, so no manual repair is needed under default settings. The enchantment glint it displays is a visual indicator only and does not represent any applied enchantment.
