Mutant Monsters is a revival of the classic Mutant Creatures mod, and it turns some of the most familiar faces in the game into full-blown mini-bosses. Each mutant is a supersized, heavily upgraded version of a vanilla monster, complete with its own model, a whole moveset of special attacks, and a signature piece of loot you cannot get anywhere else.
The mod adds mutant versions of the Creeper, Zombie, Skeleton, Enderman, and Snow Golem, along with the tamable Creeper Minion and the fast, wall-climbing Spider Pig. The core loop is simple and addictive: hunt down a mutant, survive its attacks, and walk away with a powerful weapon, tool, or armor set.
You can stumble onto rare mutants spawning naturally in the dark, or you can take control and brew Chemical X to transform ordinary mobs into mutants whenever you want. This guide covers every mutant, every drop, and every trick you need to farm them safely.
Getting Started with Mutant Monsters
Mutant Monsters drops you straight into the deep end, since every mutant hits like a boss from your very first encounter. There is no crafting tree to grind through first. Your entire progression is built around finding one mutant, beating it, and using its drop to make more. Follow these steps to get your first mutant and start the loot cycle.
Track Down Your First Mutant
Hunt the rare ones in the dark
Mutants spawn naturally in dark areas of the Overworld, the same places normal monsters appear, but far less often. They are uncommon enough that you will not trip over one by accident, so go looking on purpose.

Explore caves and unlit surface areas at night, and listen for their loud, distinctive sounds. The first sighting feels genuinely intimidating, because these things dwarf their vanilla cousins and soak up a huge amount of damage.
Beat It and Grab the Drop
Every mutant leaves a unique reward
Come prepared with decent armor, plenty of food, and a milk bucket. Once you defeat a mutant, it leaves behind a signature item: the Mutant Zombie drops the
Hulk Hammer, the Mutant Skeleton scatters bones you can craft into armor, and the Mutant Enderman leaves soul fragments. Hold onto at least one of these drops, because it is the key to making Chemical X.
Brew Chemical X
Turn a mutant drop into a potion
Chemical X is the potion that lets you create mutants on demand. Place a
Thick Potion in a
Brewing Stand, then add any mutant drop as the ingredient.

An
Endersoul Hand,
Hulk Hammer,
Creeper Shard, or
Mutant Skeleton Skull all work. Add Gunpowder afterward to turn it into a Splash Chemical X so you can throw it at targets.
Transform Mobs on Demand
Throw Chemical X to make new mutants
Throw a Splash Chemical X at a
Creeper,
Enderman,
Skeleton,
Zombie, or
Snow Golem, and it has a strong chance to mutate into the matching monster. Now you never have to wait for a rare spawn again. This is the moment the mod opens up: you can farm any mutant you want, stock up on drops, and gear yourself out with the best weapons and armor the mod offers.
Chemical X needs a mutant drop to brew, and drops come from mutants. That means your very first mutant has to be a wild one found in the dark. After that first kill, you can brew Chemical X and mass-produce mutants forever.
How Chemical X Works
Chemical X is the heart of the whole mod, and understanding it saves you hours of hunting. It is a brewed potion made from a
Thick Potion plus a single mutant drop, and it comes in drinkable, splash, and lingering forms just like a vanilla potion.

The splash version is the one you want, since Chemical X only does something when it lands on a living mob. When Chemical X hits most mobs, it spawns a swirling skull spirit that damages the target for a few seconds before the creature explodes. Against the right vanilla mobs, though, it does something far more useful: it transforms them into their mutant form.
A
Creeper becomes a Mutant Creeper, an
Enderman becomes a Mutant Enderman, a
Skeleton becomes a Mutant Skeleton, a
Zombie becomes a Mutant Zombie, and a
Snow Golem becomes a Mutant Snow Golem. The
Pig is a special case that produces the Spider Pig instead.
First give a Pig a Fermented Spider Eye to prime it, then splash it with Chemical X to complete the transformation. Bosses and a few special entities cannot be converted at all, so throwing Chemical X at them only deals the damage-and-explode effect rather than creating a new monster.
Mutant Difficulty Ranking
The four hostile mutants vary wildly in how dangerous they are and how you approach each fight. The Mutant Creeper and Mutant Zombie are the fairest introductions, the Mutant Skeleton punishes you at range, and the Mutant Enderman is widely considered the toughest fight in the mod thanks to its 200 health pool and relentless teleporting.
Mutant Creeper
Mutant Zombie
Mutant Skeleton
Mutant Enderman
Mutant Creeper

The Mutant Creeper was the very first mutant ever added to the original mod, and it is still one of the most memorable fights. It stands far taller than a normal
Creeper and carries six times the health, so it will not simply walk up and pop. Instead it juggles several distinct attacks, and if it ever survives long enough to heal, the fight resets on you.
Mutant Creeper
Mutant MonstersJump Blast
Leaps up and explodes on landing

Its signature move is a high leap into the air that ends in an explosion when it lands. This is the attack that catches most players out, so watch for the jump and sprint away from the landing spot. A charged Mutant Creeper produces a bigger blast, making this move genuinely lethal if you are cornered against a wall.
Charge and Heal
Glows still while regaining health
If you see the Mutant Creeper stand still and glow, it is charging, and finishing that charge heals it for a large chunk of health. Punish it immediately with your strongest hits to interrupt the recovery. There is also a chance the charge calls down lightning, and a Mutant Creeper struck by lightning becomes charged, turning it far more dangerous.
Minion Swarm
Summons small explosive minions

The Mutant Creeper spawns a batch of tiny
Creeper Minions to swarm you, and it summons more the healthier it is. On their own they are weak, but if they surround you they can chip away your health fast and set up the bigger creeper for a finishing blast. Clear them quickly or reposition so they cannot box you in.
Death Implosion
Sucks you in, then detonates
When the Mutant Creeper dies it does not go quietly. It pulls nearby entities toward itself and then unleashes one massive final explosion. The moment its health bar empties, run in the opposite direction and put as much distance as you can between yourself and the body before the blast goes off.
How to Beat the Mutant Creeper
Keep moving and never let it charge uninterrupted. Deal steady damage to stop the heal, back away from every jump, and be ready to sprint the instant it dies to avoid the death blast. A bow lets you whittle it down from a safe distance, and blast protection armor takes the edge off the explosions if you plan to farm several in a row.
Drops and the Creeper Shard
Kill a Mutant Creeper and it leaves behind a Creeper Minion Egg. You have two choices with that egg.

Break it, and there is a chance it yields a Creeper Shard, which doubles as an explosive weapon and a crafting ingredient. Leave it alone instead, and after a few in-game days it hatches into a loyal Creeper Minion companion.
Mutant Zombie

The Mutant Zombie is a hulking bruiser with 150 health and a heavy 12 damage melee hit. It does not burn in sunlight, and at night it slowly regenerates, so daytime is the smart time to fight one. Its attacks are simpler than the Mutant Creeper’s, but its refusal to stay dead makes it one of the most frustrating mutants for unprepared players.
Mutant Zombie
Mutant MonstersSeismic Slam
Sends a shockwave along the ground
The Mutant Zombie slams the ground and sends a line of seismic waves rippling forward about eight blocks. The waves tear up terrain and can inflict Hunger on top of the damage. Step to the side rather than backpedaling in a straight line, since the wave travels directly ahead of the zombie.
Throw and Smash
Tosses you up, then spikes you down

This is its most devastating move. The zombie hurls you high into the air, leaps up after you, and smashes you back into the ground like a volleyball spike. Between the heavy hit and the fall damage, this combo can nearly delete an unarmored player. Keep a feather-falling edge or simply avoid being caught in the open.
Roar and Summon
Calls in reinforcements
The Mutant Zombie roars, knocking back and lightly damaging anything nearby, and raises several regular Zombies from the ground to fight alongside it. On Normal and Hard difficulty it can also convert Villagers it hits into Zombie Villagers, so keep the fight well away from your town.
The Resurrection Trick
Here is the part that catches everyone. When you drain the Mutant Zombie’s health, it collapses and then gets back up with roughly 37 health, and it will do this three separate times before finally staying down. Between its lives and its regeneration, that adds up to well over 260 total damage to grind through the hard way.
The instant the Mutant Zombie falls, set it on fire with Flint and Steel, or hit it with a Fire Aspect weapon. Burning the body stops the resurrection cold, so you only have to kill it once instead of four times.
Drops and the Hulk Hammer
Defeat a Mutant Zombie and it drops the Hulk Hammer, a slow but crushing weapon that also lets you replicate its ground-smashing shockwave. Killing one with the hammer itself earns the Hulk Smash advancement, so hang onto your first hammer and use it to farm the rest.
Mutant Skeleton
The Mutant Skeleton is a long-range terror that punishes you for keeping your distance and for closing the gap. It fires fast, accurate arrows laced with potion effects, and it has nasty melee options if you get too close. With 150 health and a full arsenal of attacks, this is a monster you do not want to fight in the open.
Mutant Skeleton
Mutant MonstersAttacks and Behavior
Its standard shot is a single arrow that can carry Poison, Hunger, or Slowness, and it lands those shots with unnerving accuracy. When it jumps, it looses a volley of arrows in your direction, blanketing the area you are standing in. Getting hit by several potion arrows at once can quickly stack effects that leave you crippled and easy to finish.
Up close it swaps to melee. A swing of its bow knocks you a long way back, and its rib cage attack deals heavy damage while launching you into the air.
Neither reads as a safe range, which is exactly the point. The Mutant Skeleton wants to keep you off balance and take chip damage the whole time.
When the Mutant Skeleton dies, its bones explode outward across the ground and damage anything standing nearby. Do not rush in to grab loot the instant it falls. Wait a beat, keep some health in reserve, then collect the scattered body parts safely.
Drops and Bone Armor
The Mutant Skeleton is your source for Mutant Skeleton Armor, and its death scatters the body parts you need to build it. Collect the limbs, ribs, pelvis, shoulder pads, and skull, then craft them into a full armor set with genuinely powerful worn abilities. The full crafting chain is covered in the armor section below.
Mutant Enderman
The Mutant Enderman is the flagship fight of the mod, sharing the Ender Dragon’s 200 health and easily the most complex moveset. Like a regular Enderman it is mostly neutral, but it has been known to turn hostile without provocation, and it absolutely will not tolerate you wearing a Pumpkin on your head. Between teleports, clones, and armor-piercing screams, this is the mutant that separates prepared players from panicked ones.
Mutant Enderman
Mutant MonstersTeleport and Slap
Blinks around and hits for 4 to 5 hearts
Its basic attack is a heavy slap for roughly three to four hearts, and it teleports constantly to reposition and dodge your hits. Its teleports even damage mobs near its landing spot. If you look at it and try to run, it drags you back toward it and hits you with Blindness, so you rarely get to simply escape.
Block Throw
Rips up terrain and hurls it
The Mutant Enderman can pick up as many as four blocks at once and throw them at you like projectiles. It will also happily tear apart the arena while it fights. Keep an obstacle or two between you and it to break line of sight, but expect it to reshape the battlefield as the fight drags on.
Clones and Big Clap
Hides among copies, then knocks you flying
It can spawn several transparent clones and hide among them while it regains health. The real Mutant Enderman is noticeably taller than its copies, so target the tallest one. Its big clap attack sends you flying and inflicts Nausea, which is why a Milk Bucket is close to mandatory for this fight.
Scream
Armor-piercing damage that paralyzes you
Its most dramatic move is a deafening scream that deals armor-piercing damage and locks you in place with fear, jerking your view around so you cannot aim. It even stops the rain if a storm is happening. Crucially, the Mutant Enderman cannot be hurt while it is screaming or mid-teleport, so hold your swings for the windows in between.
How to Beat the Mutant Enderman
Bring one or two Milk Buckets for the Nausea, and never fight it while wearing a Pumpkin. Do not waste attacks while it screams or teleports, since it is invulnerable then.
Fight in a tight space to limit its teleport options, watch for the taller model when it clones, and keep the pressure on so it cannot heal behind its copies. When it finally dies, it takes several seconds to deteriorate and lashes out one last time, so stay alert until the body is gone.
Drops and the Endersoul Hand
The Mutant Enderman does not drop an item directly. Instead, as it dies it releases floating Endersoul Fragments.
Right-click those fragments to attach them to yourself, then drop an Eye of Ender on the ground to assemble the Endersoul Hand, one of the best tools in the whole mod. It is fiddly the first time, but the payoff is well worth it.
Friendly Mutants: Snow Golem and Spider Pig
Not every mutant wants you dead. Two of them can become genuine allies, and both are made with Chemical X rather than found in the wild. The Mutant Snow Golem is a defensive guardian for your base, and the Spider Pig is a fast, rideable mount once you tame it.
Mutant Snow Golem
Mutant Snow Golem
Mutant MonstersThe Mutant Snow Golem is a friendly bruiser with 80 health that makes an excellent base defender. Rather than tossing tiny snowballs, it hurls whole ice and snow blocks at hostile mobs with surprising range, and it spreads snow and ice across the ground wherever it walks. Right-click one to make it follow you around like a bodyguard.
You keep it healthy by throwing Snowballs at it, with each one restoring a point of health, so a stack of Snowballs doubles as a repair kit. Its one real weakness is heat: it melts and takes steady damage in warm biomes and the Nether, and it instinctively flees from rain, so station it somewhere cool and covered if you want it to last.
Spider Pig
Spider Pig
Mutant MonstersThe Spider Pig is a bizarre hybrid you create by feeding a Pig a Fermented Spider Eye and then splashing it with Chemical X. It is fast, climbs walls like a spider, leaps at targets, and lays down webs that let it deal bonus damage to anything tangled up. Left wild it will attack Pigs and Spiders, converting them into more Spider Pigs.
Taming one is unusual. Instead of feeding it food, you weaken it to low health and then let it kill and absorb one of your Creeper Minions, which transfers the minion’s soul and makes the Spider Pig your pet.
Once tamed, give it a Saddle to ride it, and enjoy its quick dash move in place of a normal jump. Heal it back up with Porkchops or Spider Eyes.
Mutant Skeleton Armor Guide
Mutant Skeleton Armor is the standout gear set in the mod. Its raw protection sits a little below Diamond, but every piece carries a unique worn ability that more than makes up for the gap. Wear the full set and you become a faster, higher-jumping, deadlier archer, which makes this armor a genuine upgrade for any playstyle built around a bow.
Skull
Chestplate
Leggings
Boots
Skull, Chestplate, and the Archer Bonuses
The Mutant Skeleton Skull is worn as a helmet and drops directly from the mob, no crafting required. While you wear it, every bow shot fires three arrows for the price of one, which turns any ordinary bow into a small arrow storm. Pair it with the Chestplate, which speeds up how quickly your bow reaches full draw, and your rate of fire climbs dramatically.
The Chestplate is crafted by combining Mutant Skeleton Arms with a Mutant Skeleton Rib Cage. The Arms come from two Shoulder Pads and four Limbs, and the Rib Cage is built from six Ribs, so you will need several skeleton kills to gather everything.
Leggings and Boots for Mobility
The Leggings grant permanent Speed II while worn, letting you outrun most threats and cover ground quickly, and they are crafted from a Pelvis and two Limbs. The Boots grant Jump Boost II for extra height on every leap, and they are the cheapest piece to make, needing only two Limbs. Together they make you noticeably more mobile than any vanilla armor allows.
Best Weapons and Tools
Each hostile mutant hands you a signature weapon or tool, and all three are worth chasing for very different reasons. The Hulk Hammer is a raw damage powerhouse, the Endersoul Hand is the most versatile utility item in the mod, and the Creeper Shard is a rechargeable pocket explosive. This table lays them side by side.
Hulk Hammer
Endersoul Hand
Creeper Shard
Hulk Hammer
Hulk Hammer
Mutant MonstersThe Hulk Hammer hits like a truck, adding eight attack damage, but it swings slowly, so it rewards well-timed heavy blows over frantic clicking. Its real party trick is right-clicking the top of a block to unleash the Mutant Zombie’s own seismic shockwave, a line of ground-ripping waves that rolls forward about eight blocks and launches anything in its path.
Endersoul Hand
Endersoul Hand
Mutant MonstersThe Endersoul Hand is the mod’s answer to a gravity gun, and it swings with the damage and speed of an Iron Sword. Sneak and right-click to teleport to wherever you are aiming across an enormous range, and unlike an Ender Pearl it deals no damage to you on arrival. Right-click a block without sneaking to pick it up and hurl it at enemies for solid damage.
Creeper Shard
Creeper Shard
Mutant MonstersThe Creeper Shard is a modest melee weapon that hides a fun secret: right-click it to set off a creeper-style explosion whose power scales with how charged the shard is. Sneak while you do it and the blast tears up terrain like TNT. Once spent, you recharge it by attacking mobs normally, though be warned that landing those hits carries a chance to Poison you.
Raising a Creeper Minion
The Creeper Minion is the mod’s adorable companion, and it fights alongside you by charging enemies and exploding on contact. You get one by letting a Creeper Minion Egg hatch, which happens on its own after a few in-game days if you leave it undisturbed. Once it hatches, the little minion follows you around and can even ride on your shoulder.
By default a Creeper Minion dies when it explodes, just like a normal Creeper. Feeding it TNT switches its explosion to continuous mode, which lets it survive the blast and keep fighting, so do that before you send it into battle.
You customize a minion by feeding it and by using the Creeper Minion Tracker. Feeding it Gunpowder raises its maximum health, while feeding it TNT makes its explosions stronger, up to a hard cap on blast size. The Tracker itself is crafted from four Iron Ingots around a single Creeper Shard, and right-clicking a minion with it opens a menu to rename it and toggle whether it destroys blocks, always shows its name, and rides on your shoulder. The same screen also displays its current health, explosion mode, and blast radius, all of which you adjust by feeding it rather than through the menu.
Creeper Minions are also the key to taming a Spider Pig. Weaken a wild Spider Pig to low health and let it finish off one of your minions, and the resulting soul transfer makes the Spider Pig your loyal, rideable mount. It is a strange ritual, but it is the only way to claim one of the fastest pets the mod offers.
Tips for Success
Always carry a Milk Bucket for the Mutant Enderman. Its big clap inflicts Nausea that warps your screen and makes aiming a nightmare, and a quick drink of milk clears it instantly. Players who go in without one describe the fight as disorienting chaos, so treat the Milk Bucket as required gear rather than an optional extra.
Burn the Mutant Zombie the moment it falls. The single biggest mistake new players make is celebrating too early and then watching the zombie stand back up three more times. Keeping Flint and Steel or a Fire Aspect weapon on hand turns a grueling four-stage slog into a single clean kill.
Never trade blows with a teleporting or screaming Enderman. The Mutant Enderman is invulnerable while it screams and while it teleports, and it dodges away when hit, so swinging wildly just wastes your stamina and durability. Wait for it to commit to a grounded attack, land your hits in that window, and let it come to you rather than chasing it.
Interrupt the Mutant Creeper when it glows. That glowing, stationary pose means it is healing itself back up, and letting it finish can undo a large chunk of your progress. Save a burst of damage or a charged bow shot for exactly that moment, and the fight stays firmly in your favor.
Keep your friendly mutants out of the rain. The Mutant Snow Golem melts and takes steady damage in warm biomes and the Nether, and it bolts for cover whenever it rains, so keep it somewhere cool and build it a covered post. When you first make one, it feels like a free base guardian, but it only stays useful if you protect it from the weather.
Frequently Asked Questions
Brew it in a Brewing Stand. Start with a Thick Potion and add any mutant drop as the ingredient, such as an Endersoul Hand, Hulk Hammer, Creeper Shard, or Mutant Skeleton Skull. Add Gunpowder afterward to make a Splash Chemical X you can throw at mobs.
The Mutant Zombie has three extra lives and revives with around 37 health each time. To stop the resurrection, set it on fire with Flint and Steel or a Fire Aspect weapon the moment it drops. Burning the body prevents it from getting back up.
Pigs need to be primed first. Give the Pig a Fermented Spider Eye before you splash it with Chemical X, and it will transform into a Spider Pig. Without that first step, the potion just damages it like any other non-convertible mob.
The Mutant Enderman does not drop it directly. As the Enderman dies, it releases floating Endersoul Fragments. Right-click those fragments to attach them to yourself, then drop an Eye of Ender on the ground to assemble the finished Endersoul Hand.
You cannot tame it with food. Weaken the Spider Pig to low health, then let it kill and absorb one of your Creeper Minions. The soul transfer makes it your pet. After that, give it a Saddle to ride it and heal it with Porkchops or Spider Eyes.
