Optifine is a modification that I consider necessary for Minecraft. If offers many more video settings, which allow you to increase the performance of the game, or make it look more beautiful.
In this guide, we’re going to show you how to install Optifine for Minecraft, as well as get started with installing your first Shader Pack.
Step 1: Download Optifine
To get started, head to the Optifine Downloads page. Here, you can see a lot of download links available for each version of Minecraft. It’s recommended that you choose a link that’s in bold. If instead you are playing on a newer version of Minecraft, then you might need to click the ‘Preview Versions’ button at the top of the screen.
Select your download link, and you’ll have to wait for a few seconds through advertisements. Then you can press the Skip button in the top right corner of the screen. Afterwards, the download link will become available, which will download a .JAR file to your computer.
Step 2: Install Optifine
Open the downloaded file, and the Optifine installer will open, which will look like the window below. The only thing to consider in this window is whether you want need to change the folder location, but in most cases, this can be left alone.
You can then hit the install button. Optifine will install into your Minecraft directory, and will complete after a few seconds.
Step 3: Run Optifine
Now that Optifine is installed, open up the Minecraft Launcher. In the bottom left corner is a dropdown menu. Open it and select the Optifine option.
Press the PLAY button in the Minecraft Launcher, and Minecraft will launch with Optifine installed. You can prove this yourself by going into the Video Options and seeing a load of new settings which are available to you, including Shaders.
Step 4: Install Shaders
One of the reasons that you’re likely installing Optifine is so that you can install Shader Packs. These are packs which completely change the appearance of Minecraft, adding all new lighting, shadows and atmospheric effects. Though they can be quite demanding depending on your system specs.
First, you’ll need to find a pack that you like the look of. Some of the most popular options include SEUS or Sildur’s Vibrant Shaders. Download the pack of your choice, and you should receive a ZIP file, you don’t need to open or extract this.
Instead, place the ZIP file into the shaders folder in your Minecraft Directory. Just like before, you can get there by opening the Resource Packs option in Minecraft, then clicking the Open Resource Packs folder.
Then, you can open Minecraft, go to Options > Video Settings > Shaders and select your pack to enable it. Depending on your system, it might take a few seconds (or even minutes) to activate.
