Chain of Souls

The Chain of Souls is a weapon from the Eternal Starlight mod, crafted from the Tenacious Petals, Tenacious Vines and Soul Dew that the Lunar Monstrosity drops in the Cursed Garden. It fires a chain up to 64 blocks, and when it hooks into a block you'll be pulled toward it without taking any fall damage, which makes it a handy grappling hook. Hitting a mob with it will latch on instead, draining 2 health roughly every half second and healing you for half of it, while dragging the mob back toward you. The Soul Snatcher enchantment raises that drain, and it can only be added with an Enchanted Book on an Anvil.

The Chain of Souls is a weapon from the Eternal Starlight mod that fires a chain out to wherever you’re aiming, which can be used either as a grappling hook or to latch onto a mob and drain its health. It’s crafted from the drops of the Lunar Monstrosity, so it’s one of the rewards you’ll be working toward in the Cursed Garden.

Once the chain hooks into a block, you’ll be pulled toward it and won’t take fall damage while it’s holding you. If it hits a mob instead, it will steal 2 health from it roughly every half second for a couple of seconds, healing you for half of what it takes and dragging the mob toward you as well.

Obtaining

The Chain of Souls is crafted from 2 Tenacious Petals, 2 Tenacious Vines, a Soul Dew and any Nugget, like an Iron Nugget or a Gold Nugget. Petals and Vines only come from the Lunar Monstrosity, which drops 10 to 15 of each, so you’ll need to beat it before you’re able to make one.

Soul Dew is a little easier to come by, as the Lunar Monstrosity drops 3 or 4 of it and every Tangled in the Cursed Garden will drop 1 to 3 as well. The Tangled wander all around the garden, so you’ll usually have enough Soul Dew by the time the boss is dead.

There’s enough Petals and Vines from a single kill to make the Chain of Souls along with the Crescent Spear and the Moonring Greatsword, which all share the same materials. Every one of them is repaired with Tenacious Petals or Vines too, so it’s worth keeping a few spare rather than using all of them up.

Usage

Using the Chain of Souls fires the chain in a straight line, and it travels fast enough that it will reach most things before they’re able to move out of the way. It can reach up to 64 blocks away, but you’ll need to keep it in your hand, as the chain breaks the moment you switch to something else or get too far from it.

Each shot uses 1 durability out of 1200, and using it again while the chain is out will pull it back in. It’s able to be repaired with Tenacious Petals or Tenacious Vines on an Anvil, and a Crescent Pendant worn as an accessory will slowly repair it for you as well.

Grappling

When the chain hits a block, it will stick there and start pulling you toward it, which makes it a quick way to get up cliffs, out of ravines and across gaps that would be too far to jump. The pull is a little stronger when you’re standing on the ground, and holding sneak will slow it down if you’d like to hang at a certain height instead.

You won’t take any fall damage while the chain is pulling you, as your fall distance keeps being reset for as long as it’s attached. It’s worth remembering this only lasts while you’re hooked, though, so letting go high up in the air will still see you land with the full fall.

Draining Souls

If the chain hits a mob, it will latch onto it for about 2.5 seconds, dealing 2 damage roughly every half second while it’s attached. You’ll heal for half of each hit, and any mob that’s further away than the chain’s length will be dragged back toward you while this is happening.

The Gatekeeper, the Starlight Golem and the Lunar Monstrosity can’t be pulled, so the chain will still drain them but won’t be able to move them. The drain adds up to about 10 damage for each shot without any enchantments, which is a small amount against a boss but can be enough to pull a mob off a ledge or out of a group.

Enchantments

The Chain of Souls has two enchantments of its own, Soul Snatcher and Tracing, along with Unbreaking and Mending. It’s barely enchantable at an Enchanting Table, so the easiest way to get these onto it is with an Enchanted Book on an Anvil, and Soul Snatcher can only be added that way.

Chain of Souls Enchantments

Soul Snatcher III
Each drain deals 0.5 more damage per level, so 3.5 per hit at Soul Snatcher III
Tracing II
Gives the mob Glowing for 4.5 seconds, or 7 seconds at Tracing II
Mending I
Repairs it with experience, as every shot costs durability
Unbreaking III
Makes the 1200 durability last longer

Soul Snatcher is the one that makes the drain worth using in a fight, as every level adds to each of the hits and the healing goes up with it. The rest of the mod’s enchantments are covered on the Enchantments page, which lists what each of them does and which weapons they can be applied to.

Tips

The Chain of Souls is really useful for getting yourself out of trouble when exploring, as it can be fired at a wall on the way down from a big drop. While the Chain of Souls is attached and pulling you, the fall resets, so you’ll be able to climb back up to where you fell from without taking any damage at all.

When you’re using the Chain of Souls in a fight, you’ll want to leave it in your hand until the latch has run out, as the chain will break as soon as the item is swapped. Once the mob has been dragged in next to you and the drain has finished, that’s the time to switch over to your sword, while it’s still close.

FAQ

How do you get the Chain of Souls in Eternal Starlight?
›

The Chain of Souls has to be crafted, using 2 Tenacious Petals, 2 Tenacious Vines, a Soul Dew and any kind of Nugget. There’s no other way to get the Petals and Vines than from the Lunar Monstrosity in the Cursed Garden, which drops 10 to 15 of each, so it will need to be defeated first.

Where do you get Soul Dew in Eternal Starlight?
›

Soul Dew is dropped by the Tangled that roam around the Cursed Garden, 1 to 3 at a time, and the Lunar Monstrosity drops 3 or 4 of it as well. It’s used for the Chain of Souls and the Moonring Greatsword, and it repairs the Wand of Teleportation too.

What does Soul Snatcher do in Eternal Starlight?
›

Soul Snatcher adds 0.5 damage per level to every drain from the Chain of Souls, so each hit goes from 2 up to 3.5 at level III. It only works on the Chain of Souls and can’t be found at an Enchanting Table, so you’ll need an Enchanted Book and an Anvil to apply it.

Can the Chain of Souls pull bosses?
›

The Gatekeeper, the Starlight Golem and the Lunar Monstrosity can’t be pulled by the Chain of Souls, though the chain will still latch onto them and drain their health while it’s attached. Regular mobs will be dragged toward you whenever they’re further away than the chain’s length, which is handy for pulling one away from a group.
