How to Find & Beat the Dead King in Iron’s Spells ‘n Spellbooks

19 Min Read

The Dead King is the primary boss encounter in Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks, an ancient undead skeletal spellcaster sealed away in the depths of the Catacombs dungeon. With 500 health, 15 armor, and 80% knockback resistance, this boss is not something to rush into without serious preparation.

Defeating it rewards players with the Blood Staff or the Necronomicon, two of the most powerful items the mod offers. The Catacombs is a large randomly generated underground dungeon that can appear in most Overworld biomes, buried between Y-level -40 and Y-level 20.

The dungeon is packed with Catacombs Zombies, Skeletons, and Necromancers, all standing between the player and the throne room at the end. Reaching that throne room prepared and with resources intact is half the battle. The Dead King fights across two full combat phases with a brief transition in between.

Phase 1 keeps the boss on the ground using heavy melee attacks and powerful Blood spells. The second phase sees the boss take flight, increase the frequency of its attacks, and deploy Vex and Blaze Storm against anyone still standing. Enchanted Diamond Armor or Netherite Armor is the minimum recommended gear to survive the encounter.

Finding the Catacombs

The Catacombs generates as an underground jigsaw structure with a maximum spread of 96 blocks from its center. It can appear in Plains, Sunflower Plains, Forest, Taiga, Jungle, Swamp, Mangrove Swamp, Desert, Savanna, Savanna Plateau, Windswept Savanna, Snowy Plains, Ice Spikes, Stony Shore, Dripstone Caves, and Lush Caves biomes.

Because it generates underground, its entrance may not be visible from the surface without exploration or a dedicated locator.

Crafting the Wayward Compass

The Wayward Compass is the dedicated tool for locating any Catacombs entrance. It is crafted by placing 4 Arcane Essence in the four corner slots of a Crafting Table, 4 Iron Ingots in the four side slots, and a Soul Lantern in the center slot.

Arcane Essence drops from magical enemies and appears in dungeon loot chests throughout the world, making this compass craftable fairly early in a playthrough.

Following the Compass

Holding the Wayward Compass orients its needle toward the nearest Catacombs entrance from the player's current position. As the player draws closer, the needle locks onto a fixed direction. The entrance typically appears as a stone and mossy cobblestone archway set into a hillside or as a descending stairway into the earth, distinguishable from natural cave formations by its structured stonework.

Compass Does Not Reset After the Kill

The Wayward Compass points to the nearest Catacombs from where it was crafted. Killing the Dead King does not reset or redirect the compass. Crafting a new compass while still in or near the original dungeon will point back to the same location. To find a new Catacombs, travel at least 1000 blocks away from the defeated dungeon and craft a new compass from that position.

Exploring the Catacombs

The interior of the Catacombs changes with every world, but it always consists of interconnected rooms and corridors leading toward the throne room at the end.

Pushing through too quickly by running ahead without clearing each room is the most common way to get overwhelmed. The dungeon rewards careful, room-by-room progress more than any aggressive approach.

Enemies Inside

Three enemy types appear throughout the Catacombs. Catacombs Zombies are the most frequent mob and serve as melee fodder. Skeletons provide ranged pressure and are particularly dangerous in corridors.

Necromancers are the most threatening regular enemies inside the dungeon; they cast Blood and Undead school spells and periodically use Raise Dead to summon additional undead minions, compounding an already crowded room into a chaotic multi-wave fight.

Chest traps are placed throughout the dungeon inside containers that look indistinguishable from legitimate loot chests. Approaching each chest with a weapon strike to trigger any trap from a distance is the safest approach.

Hidden rooms exist behind cracked stone walls in various parts of the dungeon. These concealed chambers contain extra Scrolls, magical Inks, and Arcane Essence, making exploration worthwhile before confronting the boss.

Pre-Fight Preparation

Entering the throne room with a complete loadout of healing and mana resources is critical. The Dead King fight is a sustained encounter and running out of Healing Potions or mana mid-fight is a common cause of failure. Clearing the Catacombs thoroughly before the boss fight also helps gather extra supplies found in chests along the way.

Phases 2 (+ transition)

The Dead King rests dormant on a throne at the end of the Catacombs. Approaching the throne triggers the awakening sequence, after which the boss becomes hostile. A few moments of respite exist between awakening and the first attack, which is enough time to reposition and activate any preparation spells before combat begins.

tHE dEAD kNIGHT, dORMANT ON ITS THRONE

Damage dealt at range receives a reduction modifier the closer to 8 blocks the attacker stands. At exactly 8 blocks, full damage applies. Beyond 24 blocks, damage is halved. Mid-range combat between 8 and 24 blocks offers the best balance between maintaining a safe distance from melee attacks and dealing optimal spell damage.

1

Phase 1: Ground Combat

The Dead King opens on the ground using melee and Blood magic spells

In the first phase, the Dead King walks across the ground and combines two melee attacks with a rotating cast of spells. Its melee options are Double Swing, a rapid two-hit strike, and Slam, a heavy downward attack with a visible windup. Both hits deal up to 10 base damage, and the Dead King has a 4-block reach advantage over standard melee range, meaning it can connect from farther away than expected.

The Dead Knight may also summon an undead army

The boss cycles through Blood Slash, Fang Strike, Poison Arrow, Blight, Acid Orb, and Ray of Siphoning based on distance. Ray of Siphoning is the most dangerous sustained spell, firing a life-draining beam that deals ongoing damage and heals the Dead King. Breaking line of sight or retreating behind a pillar interrupts the beam. Fang Ward occasionally triggers as a defensive response, so constant melee pressure without pause is risky.

In regular intervals the Dead King fires barrages of Wither Skulls, launching 3 to 4 projectiles at once on cooldowns of 70 to 140 ticks. It periodically casts Raise Dead, summoning undead minions from the floor in groups of up to 4. These summons must be managed immediately since they will distract from the boss and create crossfire situations. Blood Step allows the Dead King to teleport short distances, closing any gap the player creates.

2

Transition: Phase Break

At 50% health, the Dead King becomes invulnerable for roughly 7 seconds

When the Dead King's health drops to exactly 250 out of 500, it enters a transition phase. The boss becomes completely invulnerable, halts all attacks, and plays a collapse animation lasting approximately 7 seconds. Health is locked at 250 for the duration of the animation, preventing the boss from dying before the transition completes. The boss health bar resets after the transition to track the remaining 250 health separately.

Transition between phases

This transition is the best window in the fight to consume Healing Potions, drink Mana potions, and reposition. The explosion that erupts at the end of the transition animation deals damage and knocks back any player standing within 5 blocks of the boss. Moving away from the Dead King as the animation ends is strongly advised to avoid taking this burst of damage at the start of the most aggressive phase.

3

Phase 3: Aerial Combat

The Dead King takes flight and unleashes more aggressive attacks

After the transition, the Dead King gains flight and begins orbiting the player at varying heights and angles. The Wither Skull barrages increase to 5 projectiles per volley with shorter cooldowns between 60 and 140 ticks, a notable step up in ranged pressure compared to Phase 1. Summon Vex joins the active spell pool, conjuring Vex mobs that fly through blocks and attack the player from unexpected angles, adding a persistent harassment layer on top of the main boss fight.

Fire based attacks become more common

Blaze Storm is introduced as a special single-use ability in Phase 3, summoning a fire tornado that deals sustained fire damage to any player caught inside it. The Dead King also continues using Blood Step, Ray of Siphoning, Blood Slash, Fang Strike, Poison Arrow, Blight, and Acid Orb from Phase 1. Staying mobile and keeping distance from Vex mobs while tracking the airborne Dead King is the core challenge of this phase.

Spells with strong projectile tracking such as Chain Lightning, Ball Lightning, or Eldritch Blast perform well against an airborne target. The Dead King still descends for ground-level passes during melee sequences, which creates brief windows for high-damage melee strikes. Keeping a strong weapon equipped alongside a Spellbook allows players to capitalize on both opportunities.

Boss Drops and Rewards

The Dead King drops a guaranteed haul of Arcane Essence on every kill alongside high-rarity scrolls and magical Inks. The most sought-after rewards are locked behind a 50% chance, granting either the Blood Staff or the Necronomicon spellbook. Both are unique items that cannot be crafted and drop only from the Dead King or in very rare cursed vault loot.

The 3 rolls from the third pool each pull from the Reward Ink loot table, distributing a selection of Uncommon, Rare, Epic, and Legendary Inks. Looting III adds 2 to 6 additional Arcane Essence to the guaranteed drop and slightly increases the Blood Staff and Necronomicon drop chance.

The Blood Staff functions simultaneously as a melee weapon and as a Spellbook, dealing 7 attack damage comparable to an Iron Axe while holding 5 permanently bound Blood magic spells. The +15% Blood Spell Power and +10% Summon Damage bonuses make it the natural centerpiece of any Blood school build. Its 2031 durability means it will survive extended use without breaking.

The five built-in spells on the Blood Staff cannot be removed or swapped at the Inscription Table. This makes the staff a fixed toolkit rather than a customizable spellbook. Players who want flexibility should carry a second Spellbook with customized spells in the off-hand while using the Blood Staff as a passive power boost and emergency melee option. The +5% general Spell Power bonus applies to all spell schools, not just Blood, adding value even in mixed builds.

The Necronomicon

The Necronomicon is the alternative 50% drop alongside the Blood Staff. It is a dedicated Spellbook oriented toward Blood and Undead magic with above-average mana capacity and spell power bonuses for undead summon builds. Unlike the Blood Staff, the Necronomicon accepts custom spell loadouts added at the Inscription Table, giving players full control over which spells it holds.

The Necronomicon is the better choice for players who want a flexible endgame casting item rather than a fixed staff weapon. It functions as a pure Spellbook, meaning it does not deal melee damage but provides stronger casting utility through its customizable spell slots. Players who do not already have a high-tier Spellbook will benefit greatly from either drop, since both are powerful relative to what can be crafted at a similar point in progression.

Finding More Dead Kings

Every world generates multiple Catacombs dungeons spread across different biomes, each containing its own dormant Dead King. The 50% drop rate on the Blood Staff and Necronomicon means players farming for a specific item will likely need to locate and clear several dungeons. Multiple Catacombs can exist within the same world at different coordinates, and they do not share kill state, so defeating one does not prevent another from being found.

The critical step to locating a second Catacombs is getting far enough from the first one before crafting a new compass. The Wayward Compass always finds the nearest structure from the player's current position. Crafting a new compass while still close to a cleared dungeon will point back to the same location. Traveling at least 1000 blocks in any direction from the first dungeon entrance, then crafting a fresh Wayward Compass, will reliably find a new Catacombs.

Use Random Teleport to Search Faster

Modpacks that include teleportation commands such as /rtp or random teleport utilities make finding additional Catacombs much faster. After using a random teleport to jump thousands of blocks from the original dungeon, craft a new Wayward Compass to identify the nearest Catacombs from the new location. Repeat this process until the compass points toward a dungeon the player has not yet visited.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the Dead King in Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks?

The Dead King is found at the end of the Catacombs dungeon, an underground jigsaw structure that generates between Y-level -40 and Y-level 20. The Catacombs can spawn in most Overworld biomes including Plains, Forest, Taiga, Jungle, Desert, Savanna, Swamp, and even underground in Dripstone Caves and Lush Caves. Craft a Wayward Compass using 4 Arcane Essence, 4 Iron Ingots, and a Soul Lantern to locate the nearest entrance.

What is the Wayward Compass recipe?

The Wayward Compass is crafted in a Crafting Table by placing Arcane Essence in all four corner slots, Iron Ingots in all four side slots, and a Soul Lantern in the center. The finished compass acts like a vanilla Compass, with its needle pointing toward the nearest Catacombs entrance from wherever the player is standing when they hold it.

What does the Dead King drop?

The Dead King drops 28 to 45 Arcane Essence on every kill, plus 2 rolls from a pool of high-rarity Spell Scrolls and Blank Runestones, and 3 rolls of Reward Ink covering Uncommon through Legendary quality. With a 50% chance on a player kill, the boss drops either the Blood Staff or the Necronomicon, with a roughly equal chance for each. Looting III increases the Arcane Essence yield and slightly raises the unique item drop chance.

Why does my Wayward Compass keep pointing to the same dungeon?

The Wayward Compass always identifies the nearest Catacombs from where the player crafted it. Killing the Dead King does not update or reset the compass target. If a new compass still points to the same location, it means the player is still too close to the original dungeon. Travel at least 1000 blocks from the first Catacombs entrance and then craft a fresh compass from that new position to find a different dungeon.

How many phases does the Dead King have?

The Dead King has two combat phases separated by a brief invulnerable transition. Phase 1 is ground-based combat using melee attacks and Blood spells including Wither Skull, Raise Dead, Blood Slash, Ray of Siphoning, and Fang Strike. The transition triggers at exactly 50% health and lasts approximately 7 seconds while the boss plays a collapse animation. Phase 3 sees the boss take flight and add Summon Vex and Blaze Storm to its spell arsenal, with faster Wither Skull barrages throughout.
