How to Make a Saddle in Minecraft

Minecraft Guides
7 Min Read

A Saddle is one of Minecraft’s most practical items, required to properly ride and control several different mobs. Without a Saddle, a tamed Horse can be mounted but not steered, Pigs become impossible to control, and crossing the Nether on a Strider turns into a directionless drift.

Saddles have no durability, so a single one lasts indefinitely. The item can be crafted from basic materials, discovered in Chest loot across multiple structures, fished from open water, traded with a specific Villager profession, or collected as a drop from certain mobs. Each method is viable depending on where a player is in their survival run.

How to Craft a Saddle

Crafting a Saddle is the most direct and reliable method in modern Minecraft. The recipe was introduced in the Summer Drop 2025 ‘Chase the Skies’ update, making Saddles craftable for the first time in the game’s history.

It requires two materials that players typically gather in the first few days of a survival world and produces one Saddle per craft with no additional prerequisites.

Materials Needed

A Saddle requires both Leather and Iron. Leather drops from Cows, Horses, Donkeys, Llamas, Mules, and Hoglins when killed. It can also be crafted by arranging four Rabbit Hides in a two-by-two pattern in a Crafting Table.

Iron Ingots come from smelting Raw Iron in a Furnace. Raw Iron is one of the most common ores in the game, found throughout underground caves and tunnels at any depth.

Crafting Steps

Right-click a placed Crafting Table to open the 3×3 crafting grid. A Crafting Table is made from four Wooden Planks arranged in a two-by-two pattern. Fill all three slots in the top row with Leather. Place one Iron Ingot in the center slot of the middle row. Leave all remaining slots empty.

The layout is straightforward: three Leather across the top row, one Iron Ingot directly below the center Leather, and nothing elsewhere. No specific orientation or shaped variation is needed beyond this pattern.

Other Ways to Get a Saddle

Chest loot, fishing, trading, and mob drops all provide valid routes to a Saddle. The comparison below summarizes how each method stacks up for reliability, resource cost, and when it fits best in a typical survival game.

Chest Loot in Structures

Nether Fortresses provide the best single-chest drop odds for Saddles, at 35.3% per chest. Dungeons come in at around 28% per chest, making them a strong early target since they generate underground across all Overworld biomes without requiring a Nether Portal.

Structures That Contain Saddles (1)

Desert Temples carry roughly 24% odds and are easy to spot on the surface of Desert biomes thanks to their pyramid shape. End Cities, Bastion Remnants, Village Tanneries, and Village Weaponsmith shops all carry Saddles in the 11-17% range.

Jungle Temples, Strongholds, and Ancient Cities are additional sources but tend to be lower priority given the difficulty involved in reaching them. A single Nether Fortress run through multiple chest rooms is among the highest-yield exploration sources outside of crafting.

Best Early Structure Target

Dungeons are the most accessible early structure target because they require no portal or biome-specific navigation. Listen for unusual mob sounds underground while caving, particularly the repetitive clicking of a Spawner, to locate one. No special gear is required beyond a sword and torches to clear the room and loot the chests.

Fishing

Fishing produces a Saddle at a base rate of 0.8% per catch when the bobber is in open water with no obstructions above. A Saddle falls under the Treasure item category, meaning it only appears under these open-water conditions.

The Luck of the Sea enchantment directly boosts the Treasure item catch rate at each level, with Luck of the Sea III making Treasure items significantly more frequent than the base rate. Manual fishing is generally a low-efficiency method for Saddle hunting given the 0.8% base probability.

An AFK fish farm built in a properly sized open-water pool changes this by automating thousands of casts passively over time. Players who have built an AFK farm for Enchanted Books or Bows will often accumulate Saddles as a byproduct without any additional effort.

Villager Trading

Master-level Leatherworker villagers sell one Saddle for 6 Emeralds. Leatherworkers work at a Cauldron workstation. Placing an unclaimed Cauldron near a jobless villager converts that villager into a Leatherworker.

In Java Edition, the Saddle trade is guaranteed to appear at Master level. In Bedrock Edition, the trade has a 50% chance of being offered even after reaching Master level. Progressing a Leatherworker through all five trade tiers requires completing the available trades at each level: Novice, Apprentice, Journeyman, Expert, and finally Master.

Curing a Zombie Villager version of a Leatherworker permanently reduces all its trade prices, bringing the Saddle cost down from 6 Emeralds to 1 Emerald. Checking multiple Leatherworkers across different villages increases the odds of finding one that has the Saddle trade available in Bedrock Edition.

Mob Drops

Ravagers always drop one Saddle when killed. These large hostile mobs appear during Raids at Waves 3, 5, and 7, typically escorted by Pillagers and Vindicators. A single Raid at a village that reaches higher waves can yield two or three Saddles from Ravagers alone, making Raids a lucrative source for players with an established village base.

Striders spawn in the Nether and occasionally generate with a Saddle already equipped. Killing a saddled Strider drops the Saddle as an item. Any mob that spawns wearing a Saddle will drop it upon death, so saddled Pigs and Horses encountered in the world are also valid sources when the opportunity arises.
