Better MC utilizes the Backpacked mod by MrCrayfish. While it’s a simple backpack mod in terms of functionality, it offers immersive features such as customization and challenges.
The backpack must be crafted first, and then it can be customized. Crafting the backpack early is recommended, as it allows players to carry more items, aiding in exploration and clearing dungeons.
How to Craft the Backpack
To craft the Backpack, combine 6 Leather, 2 String, and an Iron Ingot inside a Crafting Table. Alternatively, a Thallasium Ingot can be used instead of the Iron Ingot, though it’s harder to obtain.

After creating the Backpack, you need to equip it before using it. This can be done using the Curios mod. To equip the backpack, open your inventory by pressing ‘E’, then click on the icon in the top left of your avatar frame. This will reveal additional inventory slots such as back, head, and charm slots.

Place the backpack into the back slot. It will then be equipped and rendered on the player’s back. To open the backpack, press B. In total, it provides 6 rows of storage, totaling 54 new inventory spaces.
Backpack Customization
When you look inside the backpack, you can see a customization button at the top of the window. There are different backpack designs, each with its own challenge to unlock that specific style.
They are as follows:
- Bamboo Basket: Feed a Panda some Bamboo while inside the Bamboo Jungle
- Cardboard Box: Chop 100 Logs
- End Crystal: Kill the Ender Dragon
- Honey Jar: Obtain a Honey Bottle from a Beehive or Bee Nest
- Mini Chest: Find an unopened Buried Treasure Chest
- Piglin Pack: Barter with a Piglin 5 times by giving them a Gold Ingot
- Rocket: Fly over 1000 blocks with an Elytra
- Sheep Plush: Shear Wool off a Sheep 10 times
- Trash Can: Obtain Bonemeal from a Composter 10 times
- Turtle Shell: Breed 2 Turtles together
- Wandering Bag: Trade with a Wandering Trader
Other Changes
Backpacked comes with an interesting pickpocketing mechanic. From the right angle, you can look inside another players backpack, and take items from it. The Wandering Trader can also spawn with a Backpack, and they too can be pickpocketed.

A shelf can be created using 2 Logs, 2 Sticks, and a Slab. Or it can be created inside the Sawmill using 1 Log. Shelves can be attached to walls, and a Backpack can then be placed on top. These also come with support for Hoppers.
Finally, some new Enchantments are added which improve the functionality of the Backpack. These are:
- Funnelling: Funnels drops from mining or harvesting directly into a backpack
- Repairman: Repairs all items with Mending in a backpack when collecting experience orbs
- Looted: Loot dropped from slain mobs is placed directly into a backpack
- Imbued Hide: Makes a backpack immune to fire damage
- Marksman: Bows and other shootable items can directly pull their ammunition from a backpack, such as Arrows
